#1 EASIEST Way To Edge A Sidewalk (How The Pros Do It)

#1 EASIEST Way To Edge A Sidewalk (How The Pros Do It)

Today we’re taking a few minutes to show you guys how to edge a sidewalk with a string trimmer! Conor is taking the helm showing you guys how he does what he calls a flip edge technique, which allows him to get an incredible finish while edging a driveway.

This technique is what a lot of the pros do when trimming a sidewalk when they don’t have time to grab the edger, or they simply don’t have a secondary edging tool. You can still get a quality edge and a great finish by flipping the trimmer on it’s side, and leaving a mean edge!

What’s your guys technique for edging a sidewalk? Do you guys use Conor’s flip edge technique, or do you do something different? Let us know in the comments down below!

2:57 is the best direction to go.

  2. @marx819 on May 18, 2024 at 11:01 am

Is it me or am I the only one that carries my trimmer on my left side.

  3. @blainstirlock on May 18, 2024 at 11:02 am

Edging with no guard and in shorts! I would never do either of those. You Michigan boys are hardcore.

I prefer to walk backwards from inside the turf. That way the debris is flying away and you get a nice clean angle cut.

  4. @Anthony_Williams1216 on May 18, 2024 at 11:04 am

    Great video man!

  5. @rwill4g on May 18, 2024 at 11:04 am

Yeah if I walk backwards in the grass i will Nick up that entire edge 🙇🏽‍♂️

  6. @bretchace on May 18, 2024 at 11:06 am

Seems like a lot of bots in Brian’s comments

  7. @HeetXS on May 18, 2024 at 11:07 am

Been doing this for a few months. That kid is good. Really good. Looked like an edger hit it. It’s really hard to do because you move out of phase even a little bit and it is no longer a line.

  8. @wilviars on May 18, 2024 at 11:07 am

This dude is covered in trim day and night for sure. Stay a free agent bro

  9. @bird289 on May 18, 2024 at 11:09 am

For the longest time i just thought a trimmer is what was used for edging 😂😂 I couldn’t imagine buying a whole other tool for something I could easily do with a trimmer

  10. @thomaspleasant8126 on May 18, 2024 at 11:14 am

do i hold the edger at a 90 degree angle or slightly at a angle

  11. @IronmanT19889 on May 18, 2024 at 11:17 am

Dude does not act like a 16 year old, he was definitely raised well!!

  12. @-xDarkxGhostx- on May 18, 2024 at 11:18 am

I do a bevel cut then, swap out my trimmer head for an edger and rip though it. It lasts an easy 2-3 weeks.

  13. @raheppe on May 18, 2024 at 11:19 am

It’s a hack method, one that I also use. But it is inferior to an actual edger and if you are a pro then I don’t need to explain that to you. With this method, a picky customer, you’ll be doing this every single week. With an actual edger, once a month during the healthy growing season. The best way, an edger early in the season, then maintain it with this method. You won’t need the regular edger again for a couple months or longer.

  14. @frankmertz8491 on May 18, 2024 at 11:19 am

Brian you have helped me with my string trimmer to the point that my neighbors are asking me for advice 😊

  15. @D4JC on May 18, 2024 at 11:20 am

You guys are excellent I need to know how to properly edge lawns because I was doing them wrong. So thank you a lot your video is very helpful.

  16. @LuisSolisOregon on May 18, 2024 at 11:22 am

Impressive indeed, the edging of course, but even more so amazing is the young fellow, there‘s hope 😊

  17. @thewombatcorner on May 18, 2024 at 11:22 am

  19. @mackenziescott4103 on May 18, 2024 at 11:22 am

    Great video!

  20. @mikelopez4148 on May 18, 2024 at 11:23 am

You prefer to edge then mow ? Also how much line is out looks like 6”

  21. @maggarlion on May 18, 2024 at 11:23 am

I use both the edger and the trimmer. I start with the edger and clean it up with the trimmer. I am just a DIY guy who works on my lawn when I get the time sat after coming home from work and depending on the weather. I try to keep nice edges especially on the outside near the sidewalks

  22. @JEVVJITSU on May 18, 2024 at 11:24 am

while normally, youd walk "to the left" when running a trimmer along the edges of houses and fences, its easier walk the "to the right" with the whip tilted so youre using the back side of the trimmer. This technnique will literally pull you forward and into the crevice, and shoots the grass out of the crevice rather than into it. Saves you from having to blow, too. This is explained at 7:45. Good work guys. Wish my boss would let me take the guard off…

  23. @user-uh5hf4qx5g on May 18, 2024 at 11:24 am

Good video, but to clarify, this isn’t edging. This is more like mild edge maintenance in between actual edging. Note in the video that no dirt is coming up when he runs along the sidewalk. That’s because he’s not edging, he’s trimming grass AT the edge.

True edging digs a blade into the ground and creates a groove/gap all the way down into the root system, revealing a distinct "lawn line" where you can see the roots and dirt under the grass. When the people in this video run along the sidewalk — take careful note that this line ALREADY EXISTS.

That means they edged the sidewalk with a true edger already — which did like 75% of the work. This is just showing how to briefly maintain that line in between the NECESSARY blade edgings. I mean, you can try true edging with a string trimmer. Let me know how many packs you go through before you give up, since they’re not intended to dig into the ground like a blade does.

But yeah, for what this video actually shows, it does a good job.

  24. @user-ju3yv8xj5f on May 18, 2024 at 11:25 am

Pretty amazing…I do that and look back at my line you’d think Helen Keller edged my lawn

  25. @AdamEdward on May 18, 2024 at 11:25 am

this guy better be getting atleast $20/hr! good stuff

  26. @karenadams7354 on May 18, 2024 at 11:28 am

  27. @1031monlin on May 18, 2024 at 11:29 am

Which is better – 2 stroke or 4 stroke?

  28. @JackyJohnson23 on May 18, 2024 at 11:30 am

Put some damn safety glasses on at least

  29. @tontobb8956 on May 18, 2024 at 11:30 am

I can’t do this with my 4 stroke snipers

  30. @user-rc9no6ox4r on May 18, 2024 at 11:32 am

Connor was WHAT??!!! WITH THE TRIMMER? 😂😂

  31. @AnswersTheology on May 18, 2024 at 11:33 am

Man this guy has impressive mannerisms

  32. @TheTownDrunk on May 18, 2024 at 11:35 am

What are you using for line? I’m tired of replacing regular orange string.

  33. @BriansLawnMaintenance on May 18, 2024 at 11:37 am

What’s your guys technique for edging? Do you do it the way Conor does or some other way?

  34. @spencerladd6945 on May 18, 2024 at 11:37 am

Best bang for your buxck…. get a multi attaching string trimer…
Get an ego universal edger attachment and have both….
The best results is edge with a edger head first and string trimmer there on after ….. reuse edger head as need to redefine the edge….

  35. @Jay-786 on May 18, 2024 at 11:37 am

    Please wear safety glasses.

  36. @fundeegamingvlogs1088 on May 18, 2024 at 11:37 am

I looked how to edge carefully idk why there’s lawn mower how is that supposed to be my d-

  37. @benjaminhearnden430 on May 18, 2024 at 11:38 am

Love your edging mate 👌 totally agree if your guard is off you don’t need to use as much power, otherwise your likely to have the cord come off and hit you in the face, I always have guard on can still edge better than most people, what you guys call a weed whacker, I call it a brushcutter in Australia, and keep the longer hair mate!

  38. @LeonardLopez-rp1xq on May 18, 2024 at 11:39 am

    Awesome video, thanks for sharing!

  39. @bill992 on May 18, 2024 at 11:40 am

    Flip and dip😂

  40. @jskater303 on May 18, 2024 at 11:42 am

    Boy look like Elvis

  41. @indestinct1 on May 18, 2024 at 11:43 am

I do from inside the grass, I feel like I get a more defined edge that way.

  42. @Al_W_On_The_Trackz on May 18, 2024 at 11:48 am

This is a good resource for learning how to edge professionally. I definitely learned something from this video and I’m grateful to you guys for sharing.

  43. @Leura10 on May 18, 2024 at 11:48 am

Could you please let me know what type or brand of trimming lines are you using for this job? Just bought my first petrol trimmer and tried to use it for edging like you are doing in the video. My trimmer line keeps breaking every few seconds. Sometimes it even breaks inside the head. I needed to stop every few seconds to rewind the line. I’m using Powerfit 2.4mm with reinforced core.

  44. @brandonmaldonado7278 on May 18, 2024 at 11:48 am

We both wear shirts when cutting the grass
    #4real tho
    #On Danny Grave

  45. @Tonesnob72 on May 18, 2024 at 11:49 am

    good channel guys

  46. @dwaynesykes694 on May 18, 2024 at 11:50 am

Stick edger to cut in a fresh edge on a previously neglected lawn, then a trimmer for maintenance.

  47. @addaijudahisrael5705 on May 18, 2024 at 11:51 am

I’ve been in busy for a few years now and only used edgers for my clients simply because thats what they recommend

  48. @MrYapayepe on May 18, 2024 at 11:53 am

    Thanks for the info. 👍

  49. @PrincernPrince on May 18, 2024 at 11:57 am

Seems like sidewalk side gives a slight slant to the grass because the head is slanted. Grass side seems to give the grass a straighter up and down or slightly rounded back toward the grass. If you had time you can start hitting it in the grass then clean it up sidewalk side. Obviously you can’t take the time for that running a business.

  50. @JimBuysHouses on May 18, 2024 at 11:58 am

Thanks for sharing your technique, he has it down perfectly and does a good job with edging up.
