Which Trimmer Line is Best? Let's find out!

Tip: Trimmer Line is “hydrophilic”. Soaking it in water for 24 hours will greatly help with durability.

Which Trimmer Line is Best? In this video I tested Oregon Gator Line (square), Husqvarna Titanium Force (round), Stihl Premium (round), XTreme Professional (square), and Cyclone (hexagon). All trimmer line tested were .095″/2.4mm. I purchased all trimmer line using my own money. I am not sponsored by any of these brands in any way.

Someone needs to invent a lawnmower with a string trimmer attached to the side and front. Trip the fence line at the same time the crass is cut.
Back on subject…good review. I love the Husqvarna Titanium force line for me last longer than any other I have used. Primarily, the line is bouncing off wood fence, very seldom concrete or block.

How about a test of different trimmer heads? I hate that stihl bump head. It takes forever to load and it gets stuck often.

Cut up to 16 yards a week for years -I use only 095” the square string.

Interesting, I have asked over a dozen landscape laborers from differnt clymates east to west coast. They all tell me the same thing. they soak the coard overnight in water? I tried this and weighed them after 24 hours soaked and unsoaked. after i dried off the soaked string there was no difference in weight?

Wow, just saw this video listed and because I’m ready to buy a new spool, I watched it twice! I’ve been using Stihl line, but I’m going to try Husqvarna. Thank you so much for an excellent video, I can’t imagine "spooling up" that many times. You are appreciated!

  24. drew spencer on August 31, 2023 at 9:30 pm

I love your videos. But I think was one of you worst test. I wish you would revisit this one. Everyone want to know which one breaks the easiest and which one holds up and doesn’t snap off. This one deserves another test.

  25. peacefrog0521 on August 31, 2023 at 9:31 pm

Sorry to report the Husqvarna line didn’t work out for me. It would break more easily than expected. Worse, it would melt and fuse together in the spool, and thus not feed. I even tried silicone spray but no luck. I used another .095” line (don’t remember what bran or where I got it) as a serviceable option for a couple seasons.

When that ran out last week, I took some Echo Crossfire loaded in an extra SpeedFeed head I had lying in a drawer for the past could years. Absolutely amazing cutting ability, and it doesn’t seem to want to break. When it does, it feeds easily. Better yet, I bought a 282’ roll for about $10 on the ‘Zon. (I’m taking bids on my leftover Husqvarna line. 😀)

  26. Barry Hogue on August 31, 2023 at 9:32 pm

Ok, interesting but not completely valid. Trimmer line gets brittle as it gets older. Did you check the age of the line? Different shapes have different cross sectional mass. Did you account for that? Still has heavy duty line. Why didn’t you compare that? Was the circumference the same? I’m not sure what your answer was. Was 2500 rpm at the shaft or the line head? I don’t know if the gearbox has a 1:1 ratio. That probably doesn’t matter if the test was consistent. I know it makes the test more complicated but shape should matter and if you’re comparing heavy-duty line you should eliminate standard line from the comparison.

    TRY?

IT SOUNDS VERY REQUIRED BY LAW TO SOME OF THE PRODUCT DISTRIBUTE THE PRODUCT WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT TO EVERYONE AND NATURALLY SMALL BITS OF IT FALL OFF BREAK OFF OR CUT OFF AND THEY FALL INTO THE LAWN AND INTO THE ECOLOGY SO TRY THIS:

SOAK THEM IN WATER OVER THE OFF SEASON AND KEEP THEM MOIST BECAUSE WHEN THEY DRY OUT THEY GET BRITTLE AND THEY BREAK FOR THEM IF THEY’RE MOIST AND SOFT THEY BEND MORE THAN THEY BREAK AND YOU CAN BUY A LONG CORD REPLACEMENT IT’LL LAST YOU A LONG TIME WHEN THEY GIVE YOU THOSE LITTLE ONES THERE’S NOT A DATE ON THEM SO YOU DON’T KNOW AM I SAYING TO SOAK THEM IN WATER WHEN YOU FIRST GET THEM WHY NOT WHAT COULD IT HURT AND TRY IT IF IT WORKS LET ME KNOW IT WORKED FOR ME AND I’VE GOT A BAD BACK SO YOUR OTHER VIDEO ON THE HANDLE WORKS BETTER THAN THE SHOULDER STRAP BUT THE BED NOSES I BOUGHT A NEW TREMOR BATTERY OPERATED 88 VOLTS IT SAID EVEN CAME WITH A SAW BLADE TO CUT DOWN TREES OR AS SOON AS YOU PUT IT INTO GRASS OVER 4 IN HIGH AND TRY TO CUT OFF A HALF INCH IT STOPS SECOND BATTERY LIFE IS LIMITED AND I BOUGHT IT BECAUSE IT HAD TWO WHEELS ON IT SO I COULD JUST USE THE WHEELS TO SUPPORT IT BUT THE PROBLEM WITH THAT IS IT’S NOT REALLY HELPING BECAUSE IT JUST MAKES A MESS OF THE LAWN I’M CUTTING WEED WACKER IS BETTER BUT LIKE I SAY I’D LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUGGESTION I’M A CONSIDERATE IF I CAN’T WHAT I’LL DO IS A THOUSAND YEARS AGO WHEN I WAS YOUNGER I USED TO BE IN THE ELECTRICAL BUSINESS AND BEEN PIPE I STILL GOT SOME BENDERS AND MAYBE WITH A CLAMP BEND SOME PIPE PUT A GRIP ON IT I CAN DUPLICATE IT WITHIN ALL TUBING BECAUSE YOU CAN ALMOST SPEND THAT WITH YOUR BARE HANDS BUT IT’S BETTER TO DO IT WITH A PIPE BENDER SO IT’S SMOOTH AND IT DOES HAVE GALVANIZED COATING SO WASH YOUR HANDS WHEN YOU’RE DONE I’M SURE YOU DO AND THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP CHECK MECHANIC IT IS GOOD AND IF YOU DON’T MIND I’LL SHARE IT WITH OTHERS BECAUSE I BELIEVE THE MESSENGER TOLD US TRY TO LOVE EACH OTHER SHARE WITH EACH OTHER HELP EACH OTHER AND WE WILL NEVER PERISH BUT HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE!

    0 THANKS FOR SHARING 👍🙄🙏🛐✝️✡️🔯☯️❤️

Weed warrior yellow spiral 🌀 it’s relatively inexpensive works like a champ.
Feeds well lasts long cuts well.

Can you do an update with .65?

  31. Cup Holder on August 31, 2023 at 9:35 pm

Instead of striking a piece of concrete, try a metal fence pole or chain link. That is more common in an American yard.

  32. Ed Denton on August 31, 2023 at 9:35 pm

Love your reviews. They are thoughtful, real world and to the point. From my experience the shape of the line has a lot to do with effectiveness in addition to the thickness. Would love to see tests of different shapes and sizes for durability. Years ago I switched to Shakespeare’s UGLY LINE, which has a triangular shape. I live on a farm and this line cuts everything with minimal breakage. The most annoying thing about a trimmer is have to replace the line. This 095 line greatly reduces how often I have to add new line. I absolutely love it.

  34. Jack Cieminski on August 31, 2023 at 9:38 pm

Just my opinion, but it seems like the thickness is by far the most important thing. I’ve got fairly thick line in mine (it’s triangular I believe) and I’m always impressed by how it can hack through darned near anything. I also do my aunt’s lawn and she’s got really thin line in hers (horsepower is broadly comparable) and oh jeez, does that thing ever suck lol. Takes me a minute to do what mine could do in under 10 seconds.

hi there you always do a good job of comparison . and now you are the go to place before i buy anything hoping you checked it out first . thank you for all of them . do you have a web location with a table of index thank you john

  37. the dolphin on August 31, 2023 at 9:42 pm

None of them is best. Use the string they use for tennis rackets. Even though it may not be as thick as weed eater string it lasts three times longer.

  38. Rock Justice on August 31, 2023 at 9:43 pm

I use the Husqvarna. Works 😃

  39. Freshly Cut Lawn Service on August 31, 2023 at 9:43 pm

LOL IF you buy a speed head for your timer you will never have to deal with taken it about to put more string in it again .. Speed heads are designed to place one end of the new string in and feed it straight threw to the other side then you wide it with the tool or by hand it fast and simple for a Novice it would take you 3 mins or less to cut the cord to ten foot grab your trimer and feed the string into the speed head .. its a well worth upgrade if you don’t have a speed head …

Still don’t know what is a speed head ?? feel free to Youtube it I Highly recommend it have a great day !

  40. Mon Solo on August 31, 2023 at 9:44 pm

I bought a roll of the Husqvarna stuff so many years ago I don’t even remember. Been using it ever since.

Seems to me the only important factor is how long it lasts. Other features seem to be to sell gimmicks to homeowners. Professionals I’ve seen seem to just buy whatever’s cheapest. When it comes to concrete a lot of it is skill. And pros are usually working the same properties every week or two or three, so the hazards are known or mitigated.

  41. Chi Sexton on August 31, 2023 at 9:45 pm

    So helpful. Thanks.

  42. Greg S on August 31, 2023 at 9:45 pm

Gave the Husqvarna line a try
It REALLY stood up well to my poor technique. Last 3x longer than the Stihl line (Echo SR 225 trimmer)

  43. Carlos Erick Godinez on August 31, 2023 at 9:46 pm

Do opposite brand for each trimmer line like trimmer line mashups e.g. Shakespeare ugly twist x Yardworks pentagon; Maxpower Square One .105 x Echo Crossfire .105; Husqvarna Titanium Force x Milwaukee; Stens Edge .105 x Cyclone .080; and Maxpower Twisted x ECHO black diamond; Stihl x Milwaukee; Oregon Magnum x Husqvarna Titanium Force; etc….

  46. Live&Learn on August 31, 2023 at 9:48 pm

If all someone has to cut is level grass, any of these will do. However, if you are cutting tough weeds and grass, my experience is that the square or multi sided string handles the job much better than the round.
