I wonder if the "sharp sharp square" not tracking well is a feature. Seems like it would mulch up the grass better once cut, which could be preferred over piles of detached grass. 😛
I’m surprised I thought that triangle was going to be the best and the star a waste of money and time but turns out the star is the best because the more it cuts the less work you have to do

Grew up calling it a weed eater but now I call it a string trimmer or just trimmer
I’d like to know what kind of plastic is used. Also how each holds up. Nylon would be somewhat hydroscopic right?
— Rust belt. Worked as a groundskeeper at a golf course. We called them string trimmers or whips.
Larger diameter cord is for larger machines. It’s better for heavier grass/weeds and has better longevity. I used to work in a mower shop, and got mixed reviews on all cord types, but the star cord seemed to make people happy more often than not.

Try doing a video recording of the performance and breakage of the weedeater trimmer line against grass near construction material (i.e., brick, concrete, fencing, and natural vs man-made stone). Such as edging a driveway, sidewalk, or against a commercial or residential structure, and identifying which line breaks the fastest against the hard surfaces the trimmer line encounters.

This test would have been better with sheets of paper rather than grass. I get it’s a completely different material and unrelated to lawn care but it probably would have shown clearer results

I have noticed a good cutting line runs out faster. I would like to see a durability test on chain link, trees, concrete and other basic obstacles in a yard. I would also like to see a test on the different trimmer heads with stationary blades or replaceable lengths of line.

It’s called a weed whacker cause you get out there and whack your weeds when your weeds are whack yo.
Wonder how soaking the line in water (1 hr?) would effect the results?

Here is the issue with your test: it only accounts for a single blade of grass. Maybe they behave differently when faced with multiple spersed out… like actual grass.
I am also curious about what you said regarding heavy brush. I wanna see the effect all of these have on heavy weeds or overgrown mass.

You would assume that anything with a sharp edge will cut more cleanly but from experience i also say that anything with a corner (sharp edge) will break more easily as well. The simple round lines tend to last longer in my experience.

Interesting bit on the name. I grew up calling them weed eaters, I’ve come to call them weed wackers, as that just seems more accurate.
I used star back when I was in the city and didn’t really know or need it. After Upgrading to a real trimmer, they sell sharp sharp square right next to it, and have been using that since.
I also don’t go full bore unless needed, I keep the speed down to save gas and line.
Going to switch up to star. I’ll let you know how it does in the thick.
I usually just bend a hangar and stick it through the weed eater holes. Only had to replace it once.

Idk about you but I use really small round line for lawn so I don’t accidentally cut into it and make it look "unlevel" because the small line will just bounce back and not cut too deep in my lawn, but for around the house, objects and behind house I use bigger square line, it’s also good for tall grass, it cuts trough without effort

This all assumes that a "clean cut" is ideal performance, but when we factor in things like ability to power through a mass of grass, durability, and price, then deciding what a "best" line would be requires a lot more variables than cutting a single strand. It might be fun to do a Round 2 with clearing a section of grass/weeds and see how the results of the single strand cut compare with line use in a more realistic situation.
