I thought this was a well written break-down of different shapes: https://www.saraheberle.com/understanding-the-various-shapes-of-trimmer-line/

It’s interesting that so many different companies have their own proprietary shape etc, but I can’t find any scientific research to back any of it up. Fascinating!

I wonder if the "sharp sharp square" not tracking well is a feature. Seems like it would mulch up the grass better once cut, which could be preferred over piles of detached grass. 😛

  2. Quan Mack on September 8, 2023 at 9:26 pm

I’m surprised I thought that triangle was going to be the best and the star a waste of money and time but turns out the star is the best because the more it cuts the less work you have to do

  3. Sloppy Mechanics on September 8, 2023 at 9:26 pm

this reminded me of the tractor pull video where the "good ole boys" are always more than meets the eye in your parts.

  4. ImOnUToob on September 8, 2023 at 9:27 pm

Grew up calling it a weed eater but now I call it a string trimmer or just trimmer

  5. Cogent Dynamics on September 8, 2023 at 9:28 pm

I’d like to know what kind of plastic is used. Also how each holds up. Nylon would be somewhat hydroscopic right?

  6. Mark Jackson on September 8, 2023 at 9:29 pm

    — Rust belt. Worked as a groundskeeper at a golf course. We called them string trimmers or whips.

  7. Connor Williams on September 8, 2023 at 9:29 pm

Larger diameter cord is for larger machines. It’s better for heavier grass/weeds and has better longevity. I used to work in a mower shop, and got mixed reviews on all cord types, but the star cord seemed to make people happy more often than not.

  8. Fire Slug on September 8, 2023 at 9:30 pm

Grew up in Texas. It’s a weed-eater, folks.

Robert subscribed then hit the bell. Be more like Robert. In all seriousness I was impressed by how quickly he came up with a well thought out, nuanced hypothesis without even a moment’s notice. Huge thanks to Robert. Also, a huge thanks to everyone who supports Smarter Every Day on Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/smartereveryday

Are the sounds during the slowmo shots real or just artificial noise? I’ve always wondered that

Steel zip ties are best, or just use heavy duty plastic zip ties, best option.

    its weed whacker

  15. The Sandwich Freak on September 8, 2023 at 9:40 pm

Try doing a video recording of the performance and breakage of the weedeater trimmer line against grass near construction material (i.e., brick, concrete, fencing, and natural vs man-made stone). Such as edging a driveway, sidewalk, or against a commercial or residential structure, and identifying which line breaks the fastest against the hard surfaces the trimmer line encounters.

Australia itself seems to be manifestation of a very imaginative kindergarten class

Kid 1: “Let’s call it a Whipper snipper!”

Kid 2: “Instead of breakfast we’ll call it brekkie!”

Kid 3: “We’ll add random O’s to words so they sound completely ridiculous!”

Kid 4: “Let’s build the most obnoxiously loud and powerful blower cars the world has ever seen but only use them to do obnoxious burnouts!”

    Kid 7: “GIANT SPIDERS EVERYWHERE!”

Kid 7: “I mean Biggo Spidos ALL OVA!”

    Whole class: “Yeah!!!!”

how he ignored india, even if it was in center of the map and probably most of his viewership coming from. all big science channel and others do this. avoid india completely.

  25. Wolf on September 8, 2023 at 9:53 pm

You said ‘cut grass’ if it is a weed eater as you said, mustn’t you say ‘eat grass?’

  26. Faces on September 8, 2023 at 9:56 pm

and then u attach the metal blade….

  27. evatatus on September 8, 2023 at 9:57 pm

This test would have been better with sheets of paper rather than grass. I get it’s a completely different material and unrelated to lawn care but it probably would have shown clearer results

What a waste of my time this video…
How is this guy in the elite of youtube?
    Geez

weed whacker in illinois or at least thats what ive heard

  30. sgsellsit on September 8, 2023 at 10:01 pm

I have noticed a good cutting line runs out faster. I would like to see a durability test on chain link, trees, concrete and other basic obstacles in a yard. I would also like to see a test on the different trimmer heads with stationary blades or replaceable lengths of line.

  32. Matthew meredith on September 8, 2023 at 10:03 pm

It’s called a weed whacker cause you get out there and whack your weeds when your weeds are whack yo.

  33. Fritzy NH on September 8, 2023 at 10:03 pm

Wonder how soaking the line in water (1 hr?) would effect the results?

Quieter? Longer lasting? Smoother cut? Weeds v. grass?

  34. Jake Jager on September 8, 2023 at 10:05 pm

Weed Wacker or weed eater in Texas…

  35. Mike on September 8, 2023 at 10:05 pm

    There behind a glass
Stands a real blade of grass
    Be careful as you pass
    Move along! Move along!

  36. 50ShadesOFGandalfTheGrey on September 8, 2023 at 10:06 pm

Here is the issue with your test: it only accounts for a single blade of grass. Maybe they behave differently when faced with multiple spersed out… like actual grass.
I am also curious about what you said regarding heavy brush. I wanna see the effect all of these have on heavy weeds or overgrown mass.

  37. gsxr 1100 on September 8, 2023 at 10:06 pm

Robert clearly works for the government in some capacity and is gaining information while masquerading as a gardener,or maybe i need to start watching more varied movies.😂

  38. Brett Wilson on September 8, 2023 at 10:07 pm

You would assume that anything with a sharp edge will cut more cleanly but from experience i also say that anything with a corner (sharp edge) will break more easily as well. The simple round lines tend to last longer in my experience.

  39. Dimitar Petkanski on September 8, 2023 at 10:08 pm

Conclusion – all are the same. 🙂

  40. relmdrifter on September 8, 2023 at 10:09 pm

Interesting bit on the name. I grew up calling them weed eaters, I’ve come to call them weed wackers, as that just seems more accurate.
I used star back when I was in the city and didn’t really know or need it. After Upgrading to a real trimmer, they sell sharp sharp square right next to it, and have been using that since.
I also don’t go full bore unless needed, I keep the speed down to save gas and line.
Going to switch up to star. I’ll let you know how it does in the thick.

  41. Earl Grey on September 8, 2023 at 10:09 pm

I usually just bend a hangar and stick it through the weed eater holes. Only had to replace it once.

  42. Adrian Filčić on September 8, 2023 at 10:11 pm

Štapna kosilica = stick trimmer 🤣

  43. Josip Kasalo on September 8, 2023 at 10:11 pm

Idk about you but I use really small round line for lawn so I don’t accidentally cut into it and make it look "unlevel" because the small line will just bounce back and not cut too deep in my lawn, but for around the house, objects and behind house I use bigger square line, it’s also good for tall grass, it cuts trough without effort

  44. Cloud Walker on September 8, 2023 at 10:13 pm

    I call it a "bosmaaier’" BUT I’m from the Netherlands sooo… 🙂

This video shows why the feminism of the Barbie Movie is garbage. Guy culture is terrific. Men contribute to a great deal of progress in our world. Both sexes are terrific. That INCLUDES men.

  50. Jared Ballou on September 8, 2023 at 10:25 pm

This all assumes that a "clean cut" is ideal performance, but when we factor in things like ability to power through a mass of grass, durability, and price, then deciding what a "best" line would be requires a lot more variables than cutting a single strand. It might be fun to do a Round 2 with clearing a section of grass/weeds and see how the results of the single strand cut compare with line use in a more realistic situation.
