Ashley is a soil scientist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are YouTube, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s YouTube channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her YouTube channel as well as her reach to up and coming gardeners.

I’m sorry but as individuals, making yourself completely dependent on a commercial liquid bottled product line to grow plants, is absolutely ridiculous and contradicts every good reason to grow plants. You just don’t need it, and it is only creating more waste and keeping people dependent.

if all you have is fish emulsion liquid, should you use it in leca with terracotta pots? or is that bad?

We love the Root Farm Hydro fertz, and it does work great. It would be nice if Root Farm offered a powdered version as a lot of the cost is shipping liquid. Great video Ashley!

  7. @assog5737 on November 29, 2023 at 2:58 am

    Ashley,
I really respect your opinion on most of your videos.
But I believe you may be flirting with disaster with adding nutes to a hydro system this way.

I have always premixed my nutes in a separate container.
Then I can pre pH the solution with a pH pen.

Forget that bottle thing you were using that’s a pain in the rump.

Also I used liquid nutes for over 20 years, and they worked great.
But there is so many darn bottles.
About 10 years ago I found a All In One powder in one container.
But I still have containers of all the extra I might want use, such as Cal mag, micros, silica, aminos.
    But all in powders.

I just find it a lot easier using these powders.
Plus it save me a little money.
Anyway good luck with all your grows.

Hello Ashley! I’ve been using the Root Farm nutrients in my Hydroponics for past few years with great results. Lettuces, tomatoes, herbs, peppers and finally had success growing cucumbers! Thanks for the info.

Here in Ontario,Canada I’ve never heard of "petey" mart. I buy my root farm at home depot. I’ve been using it on my orchids in leca for a couple of years, as well as my houseplants in a pon substitute. So far, so good.😊

  15. @lovealightredruddy on November 29, 2023 at 3:11 am

Hydroponics is crazy. The soil represents your small intestine with microbiome as does soil with microbiology. How does hydroponics factor into similar soil health benefits when you feed the roots with synthetic stabilizers ? Or maybe theres few nutrients but let’s be clear, bacteria and fungi enzymes play a crucial role in the breakdown for plant uptake.
It’s a dart boat with bullseye getting the hydroponic solution to be uptake by plant. A PH range approx. 6.3 … the soil microbes actually regulates the PH level all the way up the roots. Each micro and macro nutrients are taken up specifically at different PH levels.
Yes you grow plants, NO you dont get plants expressing their genetic profile.
Soil is the most important way to grow plants.
    Love to you all.

What kind of water do you use for your hydroponics setup, I see conflicting information on whether RO water or Tap water is better. Is KH good or bad?!

I can’t wait to be an Ashley for a few moments! My hydroponic supplies arrived today (early) but the nutrients people talk about generally are not available in my rural community. You just made me infinitely more confident in my first hydroponics experience!

    root farm

  30. @stephenshanebeaty on November 29, 2023 at 3:39 am

Why do you have to buy two different bottles and then mix them together why can’t they come pre-mixed, I think it’s just a way of getting more money out of people’s pockets. Just use an all-purpose fertilizer, the ones labeled for blooms or leafy greens or vegetables is all marketing.

  31. @brianseybert2189 on November 29, 2023 at 3:39 am

Totally unrelated question, kind of. I started using "comfrey tea" last year in my vegetable gardens. Basically it’s a fermentation process where you cram as many comfrey leaves in a 5 gallon pail, fill with water, cover and let sit for 4 weeks to six weeks. My only concern (knowing a bit more about soil life than last year) is, am I loading my garden with anaerobic bacteria harmful to my good soil life?
One thing I have learned in the past 2 years of gardening is, do not take the word of unscientific gardeners on YouTube.
You are my one and only go to soil scientist.
Last fall, around mid to late November I found a pail of comfrey tea than was at least 2 months old. Being concerned over the anaerobic bacteria, I aerated it. Fortunately I did this late in the day, because when I turned the aerator on in my garage it smelled like a sewage treatment plant. I was pleasantly surprised in the morning that the sewer smell had dissipated and it just stunk like comfrey tea.
I have no problem aerating the comfrey tea if the anaerobes are a problem.

  34. @tonypalmer8556 on November 29, 2023 at 3:45 am

As a senior herb gardener I purchased a Jiffy a couple years ago now. I am a dirt gardener but it’s good to learn hydro. You can grow a big plant in it with support. Clean really well watch your pH. I spent many year in a pulp mill where I learned your plastics, even the best will acidify when exposed to lower pH water. Snow storms in central B.C. Great content.
