Hydroponic Advantage
If you dial in hydroponics then odds are plants will grow faster than if you were using soil which is part of the reason for the popularity.
The reason why this can happen is in hydroponics the nutrients are directly available to the plant in the water solution.
In soil, nutrients often have to be converted before uptake or are bound to particles reducing the speed of availability.

Reasons Against Hydroponics
One of the drawbacks to hydroponics is the upfront cost
In addition for the grower to need to be sure all conditions are maximized on a continual basis.
For example if the pH of the nutrient solution shifts (which can occur in a single day) this could severely damage the roots and cause stunting of the plants.
If left for longer this could result in the loss of the crop over just a short period of time.
This is because unlike soil there is no buffer factor.

Importance of pH
With all hydroponic systems growers must be mindful of the pH of the solution at all times so a continual monitor is important.

Different Substates in Hydroponic Production
Under the category of hydroponics there are many different substrates that can apply.
Sometimes there is no root supportive substrate.
All of the substrates for hydroponic production typically only supply a physical structure for roots and hold varying degrees of water and allow for aeration.
Popular Options:
Clay Pebbles/Growstones
Coco Coir
Rockwool

With-in Hydroponics Specific Systems Can be Selected
Deep Water Culture
Ebb and Flow
Indoor Drip Irrigation
Aeroponics
