When you first heat the mats with seed trays on them them will flatten out perfectly. If you like cucumbers, you should try Katrina cucumbers for Johnny’s. They are sooo prolific, don’t need pollinators, you can use them small to pickle or grow large for slicers and freeze dry great for snacks or dipping. A little pricey for seeds, but well worth it.

I bought the photo organizers for seeds too! I actually made labels for the side that faces up when they are all in the box….on the left side of the latch, I put the date(ish) the seeds need to be started indoors, and on the right of the latch, the date to transplant them outside. If the seeds get started directly in the ground, I only put a date on the right. (All dates are based on the "before last frost" for my area, going by what the packet said for each type of seed.) Then I sorted seeds based on how long "before last frost" into each box and VIOLA…the most organized I’ve ever been with starting seeds, thanks to YOU!

I thought that room was a small kitchen that you were going to use for canning. Am I remembering it wrong, do you have another space?
Also do not piggy back those surge protectors, it is a fire hazard.

  4. @lorettalindamood1345 on January 21, 2024 at 5:44 am

Hi Becky, I think you need a designated work table. 😉

  5. @cindyjoferguson3533 on January 21, 2024 at 5:45 am

Thank you for the MI Gardner code. I placed my 1st order for this year. We are in SE Arizona and having unseasonably cold weather this year, typically our last frost date is the end of May. So excited to get planting!

  6. @graskeygirls3850 on January 21, 2024 at 5:46 am

Becky you could talk about the weather and we would listen. I love, love when you walk around your property

  7. @dianecuthbertson2686 on January 21, 2024 at 5:48 am

Bring the extra table in, lay it lengthways it will be easier to access from both sides then, if you use the other big table then your taking away seeds that needs the heat mats.

Greetings from the other coast! Thank you for your videos! Thank you for sharing the information about MI gardener and the discount code; they do have great prices! God bless you, stay well, and continue sharing your videos with us.

  9. @mrsmorrisonccs on January 21, 2024 at 5:51 am

Is there an expiration on the free shipping at MI gardener for purchase over $12?

  10. @mistymounthomestead8594 on January 21, 2024 at 5:52 am

Hum I’m in Canada zone 3b/4a and growing sage for last 3 years. Rosemary doesn’t come back though.

  11. @Nana_Wright on January 21, 2024 at 5:53 am

You can flatten your heat mats by turning them on for a little while, but please follow the correct information on plugging them up. You don’t want a fire!

  12. @bubbles44088 on January 21, 2024 at 5:53 am

Becky I dont remember if you ever stated your new elevation but last yr we got snow in mid May at my house and I am just shy of the 2000′ level (also sw wa) not a typical thing around here but just something to keep in mind. With snow-mageddon here I haven’t really been thinking about the garden yet but now you got me all excited again but I can’t really start things till the middle to end of March 😭

  13. @ispeak4detrees on January 21, 2024 at 5:54 am

I’ve noticed from looking at the US garden zones map that if you live up North, but closer to the ocean or coast, especially at sea level, the garden zone is warmer. The ocean definitely keeps the climate at a warmer temperature there compared to the rest of the state.
I also find it crazy that Alaska has zones 1-8.

Inexpensive grow lights: LED shop light, 5000 lumen, day light. Bought at Walmart $20 each. Work great. Have been using for yrs. I do have 1 regular grow light. No difference in growth so decided not to purchase any more for seed starting. I do use for my other plants though around the house and in sunroom. Love your videos Becky. Want to bottle your energy. Lovely family.😊

  15. @sharongrashen1196 on January 21, 2024 at 5:57 am

    Becky you are an inspiration!

  16. @bintlooda on January 21, 2024 at 5:58 am

I would suggest putting a regular shelf here / the one without the grow lights @16:00 to benefit from the sunlight whenever ur seedlings are a little bit bigger. So u will have more space for them and focus on having the germination and the first few weeks under the grow lights. They should be enough for this season no need to buy more now

  17. @annjelly-wy4uk on January 21, 2024 at 5:58 am

Hi Becky! Maybe turn on your heat mats for a bit and the warmth should help them flatten out. Love all your videos!

  18. @UrbanHomesteadMomma on January 21, 2024 at 6:00 am

Love seeing your set up… your truly living my dream!!! Your new property is almost exactly what kind of home I’d love to have (but can’t afford). The big bungalow, the room for a giant pantry, grow room, giant custom designed garden, orchard, chickens, huge kitchen space, etc etc…. Such a beautiful homestead set up!! I am watching you get things set up and growing with excitement for you… praying for your success!! ❤❤❤

MI Garnder is my favorite for seeds. Just get sad that he is always out of stock when I go to order

  21. @miephoex on January 21, 2024 at 6:06 am

Wearing a mask is recommended when sweeping out rooms used by prior owners. You don’t know what chemicals they used. Just my thoughts.

  22. @comenterrimcd2571 on January 21, 2024 at 6:07 am

Love Clyde’s guide and the seeding square. Never would have made it without their help at the beginning

  23. @MzLorenWit on January 21, 2024 at 6:12 am

you might want to think about putting some cheap contact paper in the bottom of the drawer for your dirty gloves. I imagine there will be soil on the gloves. The contact paper will make clean up much easier. Might even think about it for your baking drawers with your flours as well.

  24. @jojonich4405 on January 21, 2024 at 6:12 am

I think putting a table in the middle is a Great idea ❣️

  25. @marykennedy3351 on January 21, 2024 at 6:16 am

Could you please share what your using to hold your lights up with? I’m looking for something besides chains to control up and down to length I need towards seedlings. It looks like you have a loop with cable wire of some sort. Plus you have a clip to hold it on the light. I need this. I bought a bunch of chain at HD and I don’t like the look or bulkyness. Yours looks much better. Thank you for sharing.

  26. @annamineer2521 on January 21, 2024 at 6:19 am

When you talked about your leggy first seed propagation, I had an ah-ha moment and just ordered the Grow lights. I start seeds in a picture window, but they do get leggy if I don’t turn them enough. I think I’ll get more food from the plants if I use the lights. So here we go!

  27. @caratmama4769 on January 21, 2024 at 6:20 am

I found a power strip with one set of plugs on or off and the other set of plugs could be individually programmed to turn off and on or done manually. It was a game changer for my seed starting this year! I start in the garage and we moved my shelving from an exterior wall to an interior wall and I think that was key also. I hang my lights from chains that I can raise and lower as the plants grow and that really helps with legginess and with checking (sometimes hourly) on the seedling progress. This year we also used a soil blocker and it made it fantastic for up-potting. I recommend watching some videos on it. As always, I am so impressed with how much you get done!!

  28. @joniwasson2866 on January 21, 2024 at 6:20 am

A roller table would add a convenience to your planting , then you could use it for transporting seedlings to other areas at once and save some steps

  29. @francesahrens1578 on January 21, 2024 at 6:21 am

You are a great, logical organizer😃!

  30. @beckybrann1427 on January 21, 2024 at 6:23 am

Hair dryer might help heat mats flatten out.

  32. @sarahbrandham on January 21, 2024 at 6:24 am

I love that you are cleaning in gardening gloves! You have so much energy and manage to get so much done (even with a small baby!) Always inspiring

  33. @danab3720 on January 21, 2024 at 6:24 am

I love the little baby grunts in the background of your voiceovers.

  34. @barbarafaulkner8855 on January 21, 2024 at 6:25 am

Becky what do you use to store seed pack in

  35. @barbaradavidson1950 on January 21, 2024 at 6:25 am

If no one else has said it yet move the soil away from the hot water heater. It will dry the bags out too much over time. Awesome set up though. Thinking long term/year round can you put an open trash can by the inside house door? Them when you come in from the garden you can do the gloves and any other clothing to wash to keep out as much dirt as possible. I have been known to change before coming in the house after rain or high allergy season.

  36. @SuperSherry1957 on January 21, 2024 at 6:27 am

This makes a convenient growing space with lights. I’d keep it for that.

  37. @JeanneKinland on January 21, 2024 at 6:27 am

I’m thinking about setting up a seeding starting station in my garage. I’m just curious, does this room have central air or is it heated?

  38. @samieparadise9316 on January 21, 2024 at 6:29 am

Just so you know because I know you’re into making your own things and saving money. Those gloves are just dipped in rubber. It’s possible to make them with silicone. And they’re softer and more flexible but still grip and take longer to break down

  39. @HolyFamilyHomesteadWV on January 21, 2024 at 6:29 am

I have a south facing window, and no funds for grow lights yet, so I’m starting my container garden indoors this year just in my sunroom on a table. My spring school loans refund next year will go to the major seed starting space. Fall refund is going to starting a no till in ground garden.

  40. @megmcguirt647 on January 21, 2024 at 6:29 am

1 – if you don’t know your grow zone, don’t just guess/assume!! Look it up. Google it, USDA grow zones.
2 – DON’T DAISY CHAIN SURGE PROTECTORS!!! You will cause a fire!

  41. @Ari-hl7zf on January 21, 2024 at 6:29 am

    MIgardener!! 😍

your hens are so funny! i love seeing them in the videos 🙂

  43. @MA-mh1vs on January 21, 2024 at 6:30 am

My gardening stuff was all over the place in my house last year and I spent so much time running in and out of the house to grab things. I set up a shelf under the carport this year and put everything on it. Now my supplies are just a few feet from my garden area so I will save myself wasted time and energy.

  44. @bcerliano on January 21, 2024 at 6:31 am

You need a few more timers so you can have one for each set of lights and a/some backup(s). That way each set can have their own power strip and reduce the overload potential on their capacity.

  45. @shadowlair8261 on January 21, 2024 at 6:31 am

Becky, you mentioned you wanted to look into buying new module trays – Charles Dowding made ones called the CD60. They have a big hole on the bottom so you can push seedlings out with a finger. Also those trays are indestructible. You can literally stand on them. I think Someone even drove their car over them and they were fine.
Someone sells them in the US, I think Elliot Homesteads latest video talks about that.

  46. @misty4782 on January 21, 2024 at 6:31 am

Hi! Planting zone help: your local County Extension Office might be of assistance.
HINT for sowing tiny seeds: Using a toothpick, moisten the tip (on tongue?), touch that tip on the seed (it should stick to the tip) and touch seed in/on soil (seed should drop right off). wah lah, huh? Good luck. God bless.

  47. @dianecuthbertson2686 on January 21, 2024 at 6:32 am

I thought you saved all your own seeds and grew from those to cut down on costs?

  48. @rosemaryogilvie6842 on January 21, 2024 at 6:34 am

What a massive cleaning job! Looks fantastic, and I agree with those who suggested leaving it as a permanent grow room – you’ll appreciate it in the dead of winter!. Also as others have said, never plug one powerboard into another. Suggest you get an electrician to install some extra power points as they’ll first make sure the system can safely the additional points won’t overload the system.

  49. @3musketeershomestead62 on January 21, 2024 at 6:38 am

I usually not into watching people clean but motivational to say the least. Satisfying to watch you transform your space! A special space indeed;)

  50. @MD-ef7nl on January 21, 2024 at 6:38 am

Hi Becky, may I suggest you start a Diary to note rainfall, temperature, frost. You could highlight each with different colours so that you can flick through to check historical data. It may help for future plantings in your area.
