How To Trim a Dog’s Nails | Chewtorials

In this Chewtorial we’ll show you how to trim a dog’s nails. No dog grooming routine is complete without a nail trim. We know what you’re thinking: “Do I really have to trim a dog’s nails?” “What if I hurt them?” “It’s so stressful!” These are common thoughts that fill an aspiring home groomer’s head when they hear the tell-tale tap-tap-tapping of doggie nails. But, really, anybody can become a master of the nail trim, an expert in the art of cutting a dog’s nails! Watch this video to learn how to trim a dog’s nails at home in just a few easy steps.

It all starts with having the right dog grooming tools for the job. Some dogs like clippers; some dogs like grinders; all dogs need a trim from time to time, so you’ll have to try out some options to find the right fit for your best friend. Then, lift their paw and isolate their nail for maximum comfort. See the explanation in the video and practice to help you get the technique down. Then, it’s time for the cut. You want to avoid the quick, cut at a 45° angle and take off a little at a time. Do this and you’ll be well on your way to trimming your dog’s nails like a pro in no time. But wait, there’s one last step: reward them! A nail trim can be stressful for your dog, so try to get them to associate their nail care with something really special like a high value treat, an extra long play sesh or just some true quality time with their favorite groomer: you!

Thank you so much for this. My dog HATES getting his nails trimmed at the vet- even at the groomers. So I was just looking for some tips on how to best do it at home so he’s safe and comfortable.

I wish they showed holding the back legs. Thanks for the video though.

That great if you’re trimming the nails of a unicorn… how about an uncooperative 80lb Rottie that wants no part of it. The key is to desensitize your dog at a very early age.. Mine is recently adopted and she is 4yrs old. Definitely a slow and timely learning curve..

I adore you 💖💖 thank you so much! My dog has needed a nail trim, but I had no idea where to start and I didn’t want to hurt him. This is really helpful!

Thank you for all the tips & tricks Phoebe!!!

  20. @KateDunno on March 17, 2024 at 6:43 am

That would be great if it worked. It takes 3 people to trim my dogs nails. He is a 7 lb.
Chihuahua. Without hurting him I have had the neighbors knock on the door because they can hear him totally freaking out. He acts like your ripping his legs off. When he was put out for a teeth cleaning the vet cut them real short. Thank God. But its time to do it again. Fun times.

  21. @RealSimsHouse on March 17, 2024 at 6:44 am

Sooo, my dog is 6 years old… I’ve never cut her nails & they are solid jet black… I’m in the country, so she is a country dog… never been to a groomer… but her nails are ungodly long… I’ve been too scared to cut them because I’ve hurd of some horror stories… what do I do?
Also, she chews her back nails, so they have never been an issue, only her front.

  22. @jonathaneglinton5378 on March 17, 2024 at 6:45 am

You showed how to position yourself next to the dog and hold their front paw, but what about the back paws?

  23. @JediFight on March 17, 2024 at 6:47 am

Step 7, stop the bleeding. At least at my house. 🙁

  24. @sterlingfoster6884 on March 17, 2024 at 6:48 am

Phoebe & Burleigh are just so beautiful!!

  25. @PoetryFoxDayz on March 17, 2024 at 6:51 am

If you have a dog that big then the sitting beside them and lifting their paw so they won’t pull away might work but if you have a small dog then that’s a whole other story! Lol, especially if your dog is a puppy with alot of energy that likes to play and won’t stay still 🤣🤣 But I really like your video!! Really helpful and insightful as well 😃 Thanks for the upload 😁👍🏻

I want to see a video cutting an uncooperative dog’s nails like my dog (mixed pit). He has to be held down and muzzled when vet cuts his nails.
