The chemistry of Cannabis edibles

The chemistry of Cannabis edibles

This is not a tutorial on making Cannabis edibles, rather it is a video describing why we do what we do while making edibles. There are two main steps: the first is activating the Cannabis. Activation involves heating the Cannabis flower to remove a specific functional group from the cannabinoids. Removal of the this group makes the cannabinoids much more active in the human body. Once the compounds are activated we then select a good extraction solvent like butter or oil. This video discusses why we choose fatty things to extract cannabinoids in. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for very chemistry-forward information on cannabis! Would you be able to explain why the decarboxylation process of heating bud needs to happen prior to the extraction process in a fat or alcohol? I speculate that the dissolution of cannabinoids in a fat or alcohol restricts the removal the carboxylic acid from THCa but I cannot find an direct, chemical explanation of this. Also, regarding the production of cannabutter, would it be better to use clarified butter or ghee as an extraction medium since the water content has been removed?

Thank you for making this video. It’s been about 10 years since I’ve stepped in a chemistry class and I want to under the cannabis on a chemical level as well as how to handle it.
I will be watching more of your videos.

Can u use glycerin or gelatin for infusing? I was thinking of making edible Jell-O shots

How does Lechitin play into edibles??? Would it be better to mix in lechitin before or after extracting with butter?

Found your tik tok recently and made my way here, the chemistry was very well explained and easy to follow. I was wondering if you’d be able to and would be interested in doing a video explaining hydrocarbon extractions and some of the chemistry of the solvents used? like which ones get better extraction? How the temperature of those solvents effects to the quality of the extract ie. not extracting undesirables like chlorophyll?
