What The Keto Diet Actually Does To Your Body | The Human Body

The ketogenic diet, or keto, has become a popular way to lose weight. The high-fat, low-carb diet is a drastic change from the diet that the USDA recommends for Americans. It’s also a huge change for your body’s metabolism.

And while keto is proven to help you shed the pounds, the diet can come with some side effects, like the notorious keto flu.The high-fat, low-carb ketogenic diet, or keto for short, has become a popular way to lose weight. And while keto is proven to help you shed the pounds, it’s a huge change for your body’s metabolism and can come with some serious side effects.

Following is a transcript of the video:

Step aside Atkins. There’s a new fad diet in town.

The ketogenic diet, or keto for short. Celebrities like Halle Berry, Kourtney Kardashian, and Vanessa Hudgens all swear by it.

And if losing weight is your goal, keto works! It’s proven to help you shed pounds fast. But there’s more to this diet than meets the eye.Keto basically replaces carbs with fat. A typical keto diet looks like this: 70% fat, 25% protein, 5% carbohydrates. It’s a drastic change from the diet that the USDA recommends for Americans: Less than 30% fat, 20-35% protein, at least 50% carbs, and it’s a significant change for your body’s metabolism too. Usually, when you eat carbs, like a starchy potato, enzymes in your mouth, stomach, and small intestine break them into a form of sugar energy, called glucose, which your brain and body use for fuel.

So, when you skip out on carbs, the first couple of days you might experience some strong sugar cravings. Because your body is switching gears, from burning carbs to the only energy it has left: fat.

Once you’re burning fat regularly, you’ll start to see the pounds melt away. Depending on your weight, you might lose up to 3.5 pounds within the first week. As you burn more fat, levels of insulin — the fat-storing hormone — will drop significantly. This triggers your kidneys to release large amounts of sodium into the blood.

Which can actually lead to a common side effect known as the “keto flu.” Many keto dieters report symptoms like: Nausea, Headaches, Dizziness, Muscle cramps, and low energy levels.

But most of these symptoms will only occur within the first couple weeks of starting the diet.

After the first month, the scales will look better. But some of that lost weight isn’t actually fat. It’s water.

Because some of the carbs you’ve metabolized include glycogen, which retains water and therefore helps keep you hydrated. As a result, you’ll likely pee more, which will lower your sodium levels even more, leading to: Dehydration, Constipation or diarrhea, and bad breath.

Once you’re a couple months in you might hit the notorious keto plateau. It’s a common term in the keto community and refers to when people find it harder to continue losing weight. One study, for example, found that overweight people lost an average of 15 pounds in the first month. Another 11 pounds over the next two months. But after that, they saw no change in body weight — despite sticking to the keto diet.

At this point, many people quit keto. That’s why researchers often find it hard to study the long-term effects of the diet. But, as it turns out, there is one group that typically sticks to keto.

It’s unclear why, but keto has been proven to reduce the symptoms of epilepsy. And studies show that epileptic children who stay on very restricted keto diets for several years can suffer from: Kidney stones, High cholesterol, and bone fractures.

But a typical keto diet won’t be nearly as strict and if you do want to try keto, you should talk to a doctor first. In the meantime, go ahead and enjoy that bread and remember, the best diet is a balanced one of fat, protein, and — yes, even — carbs.

bread was not exactly widely available when we evolved as Hunter gatherers. We hadn’t made the switch to agricultural societies yet. How could it be that breads an essential part of our diet?

  2. @user-pk7dd8tz8t on June 1, 2024 at 11:26 am

50% carbs… that’s precisely why so many people are fat and sick in this country. The fatist we’ve ever been. Diabetes everywhere. Type 2 can be absolutely cured with this proper human way of eating. USDA will eventually kill you

38 year old, healthy all my life, tried keto for hell of it. 6 weeks in now. Never felt and looked better. Even my voice changed and I’ve never felt so calm.

  9. @abehaile2659 on June 1, 2024 at 11:32 am

Keto helped me shed a lot of weight, which then made it a lot easier to run gradually longer distances. 3 months later I’m about to run a 10K at age 42. When used with exercise, keto is incontrovertibly the fastest way to get into good shape and maintain overall fitness if you’re committed

  10. @bass_freak on June 1, 2024 at 11:32 am

    Yes.
I have lost weight, but also nuscle mass.
But soon i will be huge.
    Eating lots of protein.
    And moving slot.

  16. @JohnTrembolo on June 1, 2024 at 11:44 am

Anybody who says keto is not good for the health must be a bleeding heart vegan who doesn’t want you eating mostly animal based foods LOL

  17. @jamesswift8315 on June 1, 2024 at 11:45 am

You left out the most important part here ,the key to losing fat is maintaining an energy deficit. Regardless of the type of diet you follow – whether it’s vegan, vegetarian, carnivore, or paleo – none of them directly cause fat loss. Their primary role is to decrease the likelihood of overeating by increasing fiber ( volume), or fat and protein intake, which leads to a feeling of fullness and reduced hunger. If you consistently consume more food (energy) than your body requires, the excess energy will be stored in fat cells, irrespective of your dietary choices.

If your fat loss stalls, try reducing portion sizes and being mindful of extra bites, nibbles, and snacks that can gradually add up. Also, be aware that your daily step count might decrease as your body subconsciously tries to conserve energy to offset the deficit.

  18. @pcbangbros8350 on June 1, 2024 at 11:46 am

Keto is a good first step, but once you go carnivore (which is still keto) you have truly entered the realm of healthy eating that the government DOES NOT want you to know about.

Been strict protein keto for 2 months with occasional vegetables for my cut. I weight lift and walk, occasional 20 min cardio. I’ve dropped 10% body fat and currently at 17% since I’ve started the diet vs what came before. Same caloric intake of about 1400-1700 calories a day. Other supplements include a full vitamin catalogue and electrolytes, ashwaghanda. People who knock this have no idea what they’re talking about, I’m getting into the best shape of my life.

  26. @Rihardololz on June 1, 2024 at 11:58 am

No sick people = no profit, go Keto.

  27. @IEatTooMuchBacon on June 1, 2024 at 12:00 pm

50% carbs for your diet is the reason why we pay for morbidly obese people’s disability, when they know damn well that **in most cases** it’s caused by them eating too much, which is a lack of self-control.

  28. @fugglestick on June 1, 2024 at 12:01 pm

Junk and trashy based on lies and dogma

  29. @AnEarAche on June 1, 2024 at 12:01 pm

This is dumb. I was 230, pushing almost 30bmi for my height. I was depressed, hated my life, got ahit sleep, and was on the verge of a heart attack. Did dirty keto, just at white rice for my starch, started exercising, drinking electrolytes for the sodium imbalance I knew I was going to get, and drinking a gallon of water everyday to help kidneys flush and dilute the sodium in my blood. That first year I lost 50 pounds. I felt way better, started doing HIIT exercises, got back into practicing martial arts, went dancing A LOT, all because my joints no longer hurt, dropped another 30 pounds that following 3 months, I was at my lowest at 150, had a 23.6 bmi, looked and felt great. I still gained weight back after I had an accident, but I’m slowly getting back to what I was 3 years ago.

This video villinised keto and recommend usda food pyramid which everyone knows is wrong
    This is so suspect

  31. @nickimillennium3748 on June 1, 2024 at 12:02 pm

Children who are epileptic are usually on medications. This can affect the health of their teeth and bones. High cholesterol is not inherently bad and I heard nothing about the increase of heart disease. Cells can be due to high oxalic content, which is in a lot of greens, which are wildly consumed on keto diets. Very misleading info.

  32. @sangeethadilip9308 on June 1, 2024 at 12:03 pm

They have spent so much on this video I guess 😂. They don’t speak even a word about vegetables: keto is not 70% fat come on the world has eyes 😅 all the sugar industries are in loss now so they are spending on li😊es

  35. @studio1108 on June 1, 2024 at 12:05 pm

How much did Insider Science pay to have this fear monger, disinformation ad at the top of Keto searches? Do better Google. I have to use other search engines to get the info I’m looking for instead of these paid, corporate ads disguised as helpful information. The reason most people look for keto info is because the prescribed pills and diets are making us worse AND broke.

My acne before keto literally looked like I had contoured pimples in my cheekbones with a brush. Now my skin is clear, no pimples in sight. My period is regular, I’m more alert, no longer sluggish, I’m full of energy and more productive. Also I’m always full on keto. Like, I could eat 5 bowls of rice and keep craving more but on keto I hardly finish my meals. Keto gives me more out of life ❤

  38. @silverback7348 on June 1, 2024 at 12:09 pm

US Bread, high fructose corn syrup, and Seed Oils are dangerous.

And this video is dangerously lacking with the advice given.

  39. @richardbergin on June 1, 2024 at 12:11 pm

keto seems like a pretty good diet to get your insulin and relationship to sugars /carbs under control. Doing it once a year for a couple of months probably best mimics the winter cycle many hunter gatherers went through, where they survived on meat, animal fat and their body fat. I think people are more at risk of never going through fasting periods or very low insulin periods in their life, because they’re constantly eating, in particular carbs. We need to give our body time to use the fat we store, and that means fasting periods and keto periods.

  40. @PeteLamb on June 1, 2024 at 12:11 pm

In other words, Big Pharma$$$, Big Food$$$ and the WHO have now declared war on the keto diet and will use the youtube algorithm to try and bury keto info.

  42. @pauliewalnuts5803 on June 1, 2024 at 12:17 pm

It’s basically the right way to be on a diet unless your a big wuss

  43. @Jennifr1966 on June 1, 2024 at 12:17 pm

DON’T COMPLETELY QUIT! And when you stop, go gently. Don’t just suddenly pig out; you’ll hurt your body. Increase your carb slowly, maybe 50 then 100. If you wait a week and get back on it, don’t be surprised if your body forgives you by losing weight again!

  44. @Upstatetechsupport on June 1, 2024 at 12:17 pm

Listening to the FDA? Yeah that’s a great plan they’re definitely not financially incentivized to keep people ingesting garbage filled with high fructose corn syrup. And we certainly don’t have an obesity problem in the United States so is there advice really that good. The issues that you mention at the end only occur if people do not take proper supplementation while on keto. How much did you get paid for this one….

  45. @dennisddiamond854 on June 1, 2024 at 12:18 pm

The USDA is wrong and useless……..ought to be disbanded along with dozens of other Federal regulatory agencies……Homeland Security, Energy, EEOC, OSHA, MSHA, OFCC, SEC, FTC, ICC, CIA, FBI, DEA, ATF, and on an on. None of these agencies have any value to anyone but themselves. Homeland Security was a response by the feckless Bush Administration to explain why the Federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies are so incompetent and useless, also. We need a wrecking ball administration in the White House along with a supporting Court system to unwind and untangle the web of waste and corruption that goes on in the Federal Government. We need average Joe’s to raise holy hell when one of these incompetent agencies (IRS?) feels like it can wreck or completely control your life because you don’t understand the ridiculous and contradictory tax code…..one that was never supposed to happen and one that changes every year. Most importantly, we need elected representation that actually will do something for us instead of using the office we elect them to only to enrich themselves and their cronies. Sounds like a lot, eh? Actually, it isn’t but it does take guts and grit to do it. If done, we need to relegate the Federal Government to Defense, Infrastructure and Interstate Commerce where their role is explicit and cannot be usurped to be used for state business. The 50 states handle everything else. Imagine that……..the way it was originally set up, by the way. If we did that, there is no cap on how great and advanced our society can become.

  46. @Carniboarder on June 1, 2024 at 12:18 pm

Carbs didn’t even exist 10000 years ago why would we need it if we’ve been around for hundreds of thousands of years

  47. @newleft2254 on June 1, 2024 at 12:19 pm

We do consume carbs, we probably consume more healthy carbs than people not on keto. People who aren’t on keto aren’t eating healthy carbs, they’re eating utter garbage like pasta and bread. Yet you’re worried about my keto diet? Lmao! Worry about your empty carb addiction and fat asses pls.

  48. @eddiedevereoxford4995 on June 1, 2024 at 12:20 pm

A lot of BS here. Consider Asians – they eat a heavy carb diet – 75 pc+ rice and noodles diet every day, and they tend not to be fat. Consider Italians or French – they eat a lot of bread every day, pasta/pizza every day (Italians), wine, and they tend not to be fat. It’s the American lifestyle and diet that is bad for you.

  49. @Fthesystem69 on June 1, 2024 at 12:20 pm

If insider science, a company owned by Business Insider, which is an international media conglomerate gives you health advice… here is my advice. Do the opposite. Companies like this aren’t interested in your health, they are incentivized for you to be unhealthy, stupid, and docile. Why would they want you to be healthy?

  50. @Buczee on June 1, 2024 at 12:22 pm

    Sounds terrible
