Canada’s cannabis industry has a diversity problem

It has been just over two years since Canada legalized the production and sale of cannabis, but despite the industry’s gains over that time, not everyone is being included. A new study by the Centre on Drug Policy Evaluation and the University of Toronto has found that representation in Canada’s cannabis industry is sorely lacking. But there are steps that can be taken to address this, such as social equity programs like the ones that have been implemented in California, Massachusetts, and Illinois. Experts say this could help boost representation in Canada’s cannabis industry.

Its very important to have diversity in drug use and the exploitation of it.

  3. @jeffreyAferguson on June 16, 2024 at 10:18 am

This is such an asinine video topic, do you want equality or equity? Because you cannot have both.

Like the hip-hop industry saying “hold on…..there’s not enough European Americans making music here, let’s force some change.”

    So what?

  10. @NegativeBodhiImage on June 16, 2024 at 10:24 am

LOL I grew weed for more than 20 years, 90% of the growers, middlemen, exporters, etc were White men/women who took all the risks and pushed the legalization issue into unwinnable territory for the Govt – youre welcome .. most growers were rural, 10% of non White growers and people in the trade were Asian/E Asian who grew indoors mainly, many of whom were involved in organized crime.. Maybe thats the simpler explanation? It takes years and years to learn the ins and outs and intricacies of growing top grade weed…. just because its legal doesnt mean everyone is on the same footing suddenly. You dont just GET to be a ace grower because yours Brown or Female lol…. Maybe thats your problem, you think skin colour and not hard won experience entitles you to a seat at the table.

What is the percent of those people in your population? Put that number up to see if there is a difference or just stop regulations.

  15. @YukiPyro on June 16, 2024 at 10:28 am

I really am getting tired of the so called progressives Liberals and this nonsense. Like I said its them that keep pushing this nonsense, before 2015 this was never like this until Trudeau got into power.

  18. @above_average_fit on June 16, 2024 at 10:34 am

No. Why is this always done when the companies establish themselves? If they want leadership positions, they will have to work their own business

  19. @maciejnowak666 on June 16, 2024 at 10:37 am

Oh no! Diversity the unfalsifiable problem and the solution that is also unfalsifiable

  20. @chrish6944 on June 16, 2024 at 10:38 am

There is a big difference between equal opportunity and equal outcome. Its not the governments place to provide equal outcome.

  21. @wildandliving1925 on June 16, 2024 at 10:39 am

They’re white and they’re men because they came up with the money to start the company and are taking the risk. Anyone can start a weed company you just have to do the paperwork and come up with the money. All you do is goto the government’s website look up the rules start building and have the land file the paperwork get approval then sell it to the government’s who dispurse it to the stores. Don’t need more rules or special status one system for all works fine

  22. @coletteoman5871 on June 16, 2024 at 10:41 am

Couldn’t find anything else to start a fight about

  23. @kc61322 on June 16, 2024 at 10:41 am

I’d also like to say, as white man and resident of Canada, living in a place surround by Indigenous communities, the MOST RACIST people I have EVER MET, are the Indigenous People’s. Always acting like the world owes them something, how about looking at life with this thought, "how can I contribute to the world or society and make it a better place for EVERYONE."

  24. @AggressiveBeagle on June 16, 2024 at 10:42 am

    🤦‍♂️

  25. @NihilisticRealism on June 16, 2024 at 10:43 am

All this told to you by some white girl

    but really

should the workforce represent the population exactly in all cases? what are you even arguing against or for?

  28. @jorda.2412 on June 16, 2024 at 10:45 am

    Primarily white men.
Like Bill Blair our former opp chief and current year safety minister?
You ( visible minority )should have locked up your competitors when the time allowed to be successful with your current business plan.
Like now. Get on the snitchlines and buy any business you want, when it fails ,buy, pennies on the dollar … better get a grant or sweet loan deal. Govt approval..in the money. Till you outlived usefulness.
    Canceled.

  29. @lifelessons398 on June 16, 2024 at 10:45 am

Tf is this ???? Pls tell me this is sarcastic 🤣

  30. @dukejivetalker7541 on June 16, 2024 at 10:46 am

Strange I’ve seen many indigenous owned marijuana shops, and many indigenous and non-white (essentially what "diversity" means lol) budtenders. Maybe cool it with the social agitation there Global? I know virtue signaling is expected these days but that doesn’t make it sincere or effective. Perhaps non-white people just aren’t interested in these careers and the push towards equality of outcome is just the burden of liberal white-guilt apologists? Just a thought.

  31. @hermittmog8697 on June 16, 2024 at 10:47 am

Oh California, you mean overturning the law that protects against racial discrimination in hiring? Sounds like a great idea. I am so glad we have the right sort of radical ideologies on the news NOT being challenged at all.

  32. @lonewanderer1900 on June 16, 2024 at 10:48 am

Diversity is only a problem for far left ideologues. The far left is the first group to look at the shade of a person’s skin and say ‘That person needs special treatment entirely based on the shade of their skin’. How racist can you get?

  33. @helenapawl1049 on June 16, 2024 at 10:48 am

Are you fed up of being force fed critical race theory nonsense yet, Canada?
Whatever shall we do? Force BIPOC and women into the cannabis industry? We already have strict hiring policies and quotas.

  34. @ansmerek on June 16, 2024 at 10:50 am

News flash, the ‘hippies’ who created the black market industry and ran it illegally for 100+ years are the very people who pioneered the techniques and technology to cultivate good quality cannabis and they too are now unable to afford legal licenses to operate. The Feds took an industry that was created and founded by a group of ‘criminals’ and handed the permits for that industry over to billionaire big pharma companies. The reason we have misrepresentation is because of the inherently flawed regulations. Cannabis should be 100% deregulated, instead of handing the profits over to big pharma that played no hand in making this industry what it is today, and cutting out those who got us here

  35. @dicekar on June 16, 2024 at 10:51 am

I dont understand this problem? what would be a good outcome? do we have to buy natives a grow op? this is an open economy are they being discriminated against when they apply for license?

  36. @klebrigandrews9667 on June 16, 2024 at 10:52 am

1:20 Ok, so this guy says that the reason for the group is not doing GREAT buisness. Is the fact that legislation that left them out? Wait. When we bring something new into this country. Do we say "Natives must have first dibs" I hope we dont. Is there anything anyone can think of besides fishing and hunting where this would be happening. Cause nothing is stopping the Natives who have grow ops here in Ontario, on thier res. From expanding and growing bigger except the people running it.

  37. @devynchristophergillette9846 on June 16, 2024 at 10:53 am

NO ONE IS ENTITLED TO A JOB BY VIRTUE OF THEIR DEMOGRAPHIC. THESE PEOPLE CAN INVEST AND BUILD A COMPANY LIKE ANYONE ELSE.

  38. @bradywise6131 on June 16, 2024 at 11:00 am

    What a dumb story.

  39. @johndekuyper2644 on June 16, 2024 at 11:01 am

    Diversity means not me

  40. @micmagellan5689 on June 16, 2024 at 11:04 am

A billion dollar industry sustained and brought by minorities only to be stolen by the Whites! Now you know what every African American farmer has went through get in line…

  41. @kc61322 on June 16, 2024 at 11:05 am

If you are qualified to run or own a cannabis company, you deserve to own or run one, regardless of race or sex. Because of culture and/or heritage, you feel these people should be deserving to just be catapulted to the top…hahaha. Put the money up/down to start the company just like everyone else in the industry has done. If you pass all of the legal mumble jumble than you will get your cannabis company or licensing, however this goes for everyone (white men and women included,) if you dont pass the requirements, you dont get granted a license, these requirements do extensive background checks and life history checks, everything needs to come back as approved by the people who approve these things.

  42. @stevejohnson4127 on June 16, 2024 at 11:06 am

That drugs have a ‘diversity’ problem is—laughable! This is a ridiculous concept that somehow we must diversify to allow other ethnic groups to get stoned—-just like white’s! Canada–you’ve lost your minds. If anything….Pot should be illegal because of its’ mood altering traits!

  43. @Paul-gf9fc on June 16, 2024 at 11:06 am

The diversity garbage needs to go. Who cares what the colour of your skin is,any positions should be awarded based on qualifications.

  44. @worldrenown4057 on June 16, 2024 at 11:07 am

    Grow up lady

  45. @devongannes7767 on June 16, 2024 at 11:10 am

something that is in the public domain and designated "legal" means that there are no restrictions or penalties. all of the new legislation around cannabis is in direct contradiction to the idea of legalization.
EX. one can grow as much broccoli as they want and sell it at a market to make the profit off of it while also improving themselves, their communities and the economy. broccoli is a "legal" plant and as such has no criminal or illegal application, as to why cannabis has a biased treatment means that fundamentally it is not "legal".(consciously analyzing the facts)
Let’s grow up people! If we allow the government to dictate to the people, we(the people) are literally mind controlled victims. We elect representatives from our regions specifically to implement what the majority of people demand not what the majority of the narcissist at parliament dictate to us.

    by THE FATHERS’ will.

  46. @RS-xh8rq on June 16, 2024 at 11:11 am

I see indigenous people seem to alienate themselves, while the remaining of Canadians get the best minds together to build businesses and partnerships, regardless of race.

Msiku, from Truro Nova Scotia, is an aboriginal cannabis company that is kicking butt and taking names. Consistantly a top seller across the NSLC.
