Growing from seed

Start with a fresh seed from a ripe avocado. Using your fingers, gently remove the seed from the flesh without damaging it, then wash off any remaining debris. Place the seed in a pot that’s at least 15 cm in size, with the wider side facing down, and cover it with quality potting mix. The seed should always be in water, ideally covering half of it. Place the pot in a sunny spot indoors and water it frequently but lightly, keeping the soil moist but not soggy. In the summer, you can move the pot outdoors as long as the temperature is above 45°F. Avocados grow best in temperatures between 60–85°F and in high humidity environments. To increase humidity, you can place the plant on a tray of pebbles and water, or use a humidifier.

Fertilizing

Indoor avocado plants need different fertilizers than outdoor trees. To keep the leaves deep green, you can fertilize with a small amount of water-soluble food every few weeks. In the fall, you can spread compost or a high-nitrogen organic fertilizer over the root zone.

Pruning

Pruning helps the tree grow to its full potential by removing dead or damaged branches and encouraging healthy growth. You can prune your plant every 6 inches or so.

Watering

Avocado trees are tropical and need regular, deep watering 2–3 times a week, depending on the weather. However, you should let the soil dry out between waterings to allow the roots to access oxygen and prevent root rot. Overwatering can also cause the leaves to turn yellow.
