Take the guesswork out of nursing competencies and get a nurse and teacher’s perspective on what you need to do to be successful .. .in half the time!
All the competencies in this video were answered on the spot – no pre-planning, just reflection on an event.
Here is the biggest tip: turn the competency into a question and then answer the question. It is not enough to restat it.
For example, in Alberta, we have the CARNA competencies and this is one of them
2.2 Demonstrates a professional presence, and confidence, honesty, integrity, and
respect in all interactions (CARNA)
Frame it this way:
How did you demonstrate professional presence and confidence, honesty, integrity, and
respect in all interactions today?
Then …. (shocker secret revealed here) … answer the question, and give an example. No fluff!
The reader is looking to see if you 1) addressed the action (what is the verb in the sentence) and 2) that you tell them how
Make sure you understand the verb of the competency and then give EVIDENCE that you are doing that thing you said you are doing. Evidence is where you paint the picture. Give a short summary of the situation to allow you reader the context of your topic. Then answer the competency question.
In the examples in the video, I go over one where you are successful, another where you are not meeting the competency and one that is partially met but did not go as planned. In those where things were not successful, you need to have an action plan on what you can do next time
If you want to use a research article in your competency, that is fine, but only use it to highlight and support what you DID. This is not an academic paper.
Hope this helps put you on the path to successful competency writing!
