Do Hydroponic Cannabis Plants Need an Air Pump? Aeration vs No Aeration

Do Hydroponic Cannabis Plants Need an Air Pump? Aeration vs No Aeration

In this video I explore using an air pump in my hydroponic reservoir to see if bubbles and aeration improve my plant growth. I grow one cannabis plant with an air stone and another cannabis plant with still water. I highlight the growth progress through two weeks in Vegetation Stage with these plants.

  2. James Gates on July 31, 2022 at 12:43 am

Need get black buckets so alge don’t grow. Aka called light leaked.

  3. Patrick Calhoun on July 31, 2022 at 12:44 am

Light through the hole you cut for the hose getting into the bucket cause algae to grow quicker. The light getting through the white bucket is most likely the reason for the slight algae growth in the bucket without the hole in the lid. Use dark black or light proof buckets and lids and it will help alot with algae growth.

Can peroxide be used to kill the algea ?

  6. Jim Beam on July 31, 2022 at 12:50 am

You have a massive hole in the bucket lid that is causing light to hit the water and that’s your algae problem

I was so looking forward to this video <3 much love my bro look forward to seeing a revisited version of this video touched up <3

Also each plant has different needs or preferences so the air stone will rock some plants and do nothing for others so would be great to see this same vid but with 2 clones off the same cannabis mother <3

It’s really unfortunate the amount of work you’ve put into this which i appreciate but it was doomed from the beginning unfortunately 🙁

For one it sounds like you’ve used seeds since you said "germination" which even if they are 2 seeds from the same company of the same pheno the traits will inherently be different from each other sometimes alot and sometimes a little which is why there are pheno hunters, So it should be 2 clones from the same mother.

Then secondly you continued the experiment while fully knowing you already fucked it with the roots would have been better to just wait another 5-7 days for another 2 seeds my bro.

And lastly light penetrates every color plastic bucket unless it is black.

Doesn’t algae use up oxygen, Thats what happens in our lakes and rivers. The white bucket transmits sun light into the media letting algae grow. Not an expert just been around.

  10. Spin City NYC on July 31, 2022 at 12:55 am

Based on this, I will keep my air pump off when the lights are off. Save some electricity with the same benefits of the air pump.

  11. ΔussieΔstronaut on July 31, 2022 at 12:55 am

You have a light leak in the top where you put the air stone tube through. The bucket also isn’t light proof and then adding The air pump gave plenty or MORE THAN NEEDED oxygen. Light plus plenty of oxygen and h20 = Alfie formation.

Kratky method provided enough oxygen but slower growth for the plant to grow but not enough for algae to form in that amount of time. However a little longer and I could bet you would have had algae form at some point.

  12. justin miller on July 31, 2022 at 12:55 am

This is over a year old, but with white buckets and light getting in algae is going to be an issue. Even with reverse osmosis / de-ionization you still end up with some algae from your source water that loves nutrients. The algae doesn’t really hurt the plant other than eating up some of the nutrients. When you clone you are better off with no nutrients though… A splash of hydrogen peroxide in your source water will kill the nasty algae, and will be beneficial to the plant providing an extra boost of oxygen right in the water they are drinking. They recommend 2-3 teaspoons per gallon, but with my RO/DI water I only stick in ~5ml per gallon (25ml per 5 gallons).

  13. Joe Rambo on July 31, 2022 at 12:58 am

Paint your buckets or use darker ones

  14. Roderick Baker on July 31, 2022 at 12:58 am

When you make do an experiment make sure you start with solid base model. Not " oh this plant main root system broke so that might have effected"……

  15. ΔussieΔstronaut on July 31, 2022 at 1:00 am

Not really sure why you began this experiment dude. Seems like you just needed to push content.

You are using 2 methods with unequal competition

  16. Aaron Godwin on July 31, 2022 at 1:00 am

    White buckets. You tool.

  17. TtvPhilswifft on July 31, 2022 at 1:03 am

From what I’ve been told Algae loves oxygenated water so that’s probably why it got a grip on your reservoir

  18. Tutorial Levels on July 31, 2022 at 1:03 am

dude had the perfect chance to put the small weak plant in airstone tank to prove you need it and he puts the big one now we can all think its just the plant. and sun because conditions are completley different for 2 plants

  19. Kyle Lemire on July 31, 2022 at 1:06 am

You should do the test agian without using a broken root plant.

  20. Anthony on July 31, 2022 at 1:07 am

Roots repair themselves very quickly. Tap root or not it’ll be fine is its alive. At that age it’ll recover from a great deal.

  21. Anthony on July 31, 2022 at 1:07 am

Your getting algae becuase your bucket is white and not black. Some light is forsure getting through those white walls. Just saying bro.

  22. Patrick Regan on July 31, 2022 at 1:09 am

Buy black opaque buckets. Cover then in a white garbage bag if heat is an issue. no more alge

  23. Michael Denora on July 31, 2022 at 1:09 am

Alge is from the light going into the bucket ….. Paint the bucket black…… Dude I would research a little more ….. Dont make videos…. WATCH THEM!
YOU have much to learn grasshopper 😉 peace

  24. Clinton Misner on July 31, 2022 at 1:10 am

Those seedlings are amazing what were the growing conditions please

  25. piposanchez on July 31, 2022 at 1:13 am

Cool videos, appreciate the share, but you don’t need to "continue the study to see if airpumps help", you need to do a study on where you are messing up. The science is there, you’re just not applying it. Consider all the factors, and if you truly want to do a study, you need to control as many variables as possible, changing only 1 at a time. This is much easier said than done, which is why I go back to: study the biology. FIgure out where you are cutting corners, because that’s most likely where the problem is. Look up all stressors for plants and try monitoring them. Not trying to be a dick, just trying to be clear. Good luck!

  26. Willis Ledrew on July 31, 2022 at 1:14 am

Paint ur buckets black to prevent algae

  27. zachary voss on July 31, 2022 at 1:14 am

Why did you even do this experiment if you fucked it up before you even started ?

  28. ceatuu on July 31, 2022 at 1:15 am

still very interesting video thx !!

    Really

  30. Justin Hallenbeck on July 31, 2022 at 1:16 am

    Its light causing the algue

  31. RaeRae DeVoe on July 31, 2022 at 1:17 am

Dude, spray paint the buckets and lids black. Black is a color that is harder for algae and bad fungus to grow in. Yes. Algae and fungus can still grow in black buckets so you might need to invest in a water usable antifungacide. Invest is some neem oil and make a neem oil spray to hit up any gnats or other little bug terrors. Neem needs to be sprayed on your pot plants twice per day. Neem is reasonably priced, and with a spray bottle of water and some neem critters will be accosted by the spray but not eradicated. Neem does not hurt the pot plant as I have used it for all of my outdoor plants.

  32. Michael tibbs on July 31, 2022 at 1:18 am

    Use dark buckets.

  33. John Gross on July 31, 2022 at 1:18 am

U need to cover hole air hose goes in through No light should be allowed to hit water.

  34. Chris V. on July 31, 2022 at 1:19 am

The algae is because the white bucket it’s letting light penetrate in through the window

  35. Crashed-In on July 31, 2022 at 1:20 am

You have light leak in your air pump one that’s why

  36. Kyle Lemire on July 31, 2022 at 1:20 am

Ha plant took off with the air pump

  38. Zarren Spry on July 31, 2022 at 1:24 am

This experiment was nullified as soon as you snapped that root. The algae likes the same stuff as the cannabis. Oxygen, nutrients and light. The reason you have lots of algae is because you have nutrient rich, well aerated water and light getting through those white buckets.

  39. Alberta free and wild on July 31, 2022 at 1:26 am

Soil based plants need air, they will survive but will be stunted and weak. The plant you have is just sitting in the food and only eating what’s close to them, you need to circulate/move the water to properly get them their food. Air bubbles do just that, they give them fresh food and air, it’s the only way to go with this system.

  42. ThatGuyFromDamascus on July 31, 2022 at 1:31 am

In the one without the pump the roots should not be fully submerged in water

  43. MrFluero on July 31, 2022 at 1:32 am

Do you know if the sunlight effect the roots please. I am thinking to grow In a glass container that’s because looks much better than the plastic in the house . I have seen many aquatic plants in fish tanks and grow well.

  44. Timothy Bernhardt on July 31, 2022 at 1:32 am

Hey Dude, try making use of grommets since i saw you submerge your tubing into a hole, with no grommet its like go grow new mexico says, if you have a darker bucket like a black one light wont get through since your using growlights, that hole where your tube is will become a problem if it isnt plugged, your light will still get into the water via your tubing hole…. The theory is without light water can not become stagnant or grow algae, so long as there is air in it, and as a general fyi, hydroponics was based on the idea of growing in water with oxygen rich water, since perlite and vermiculite makes more oxygen available in soil thus it equals much bigger stems and bigger frosted budz. Water has very little oxygen in it so it should be induced via a pump since roots absorb more nutes via the use of oxygen.
    Food for thought.

The allergies coming from the bucket being white and it letting the sun 🌞thru

  49. J. Bright on July 31, 2022 at 1:40 am

I’m not even sure why you posted this. Should’ve started two plants from scratch.

  50. george smith on July 31, 2022 at 1:41 am

No 👎 he has algae because he has a hole in his bucket lid where he’s pure the tube for the air stone!! That’s where the light is coming from
