So, you want to know how to germinate marijuana seeds? We don’t blame you, this is arguably the most important step for having a successful grow.

If you don’t germinate your seeds correctly then, to put it simply, they won’t grow at all, let alone thrive. However, if you do germinate weed seeds correctly then you have taken the all-important first step in rearing successful and productive plants.

To successfully germinate cannabis seeds using the ‘paper towel’ method shown in this video, you will need:
Cannabis seeds
Water
Paper towels
A plate

Directions:

1. Pour 200 ml of purified water into the beaker. Then, add a drop of liquefied seaweed, and mix thoroughly.
2. Pour the seeds in the germination mix, and give it a little stir. Let it sit for 24 to 48 hours.
3. Prepare four (4) to six (6) sheets of plain paper towel. You need to create a bottom and top (cover) paper napkin folding; both made up of two (2) to three (3) sheets. Take the four corners in the middle, creating a two- to three-layered square fold.
4. Put one paper towel on the plate. The folded side with four triangles should be facing the plate.
5. Pour some of the water and seaweed mix on the paper towel to moisten it. Then, put the seeds on top.
6. Put the other paper towel on top as a cover. It will soak up all the extra water. Make sure there is no free-standing water under the plate.
7. Leave the plate and its contents in a warm, dark place.
8. Every 12 to 24 hours, check back to make sure the paper towels are still wet.
9. Once 48 hours have gone by, you should see beautiful little sprouts.

Now you have germinated seeds, it is time for you to plant them. I’ll show you the best way to do it in the next video.

I’m 74 years old a new to growing cannabis plants. I’ve been germinating my own vegetable seeds for more than 30 years. Many years ago I wondered about the best way to germinate seeds and then I realized it was relatively easy and cheap to do my own testing for finding the best method – using the same seed and comparing results using different mediums and methods (damp paper towel/baggies, customized and commercial germination mixes, soil less methods (peat pellets, fine vermiculite, coir, peat moss), high and low humidity environments, varying temperatures (thermostat-controlled heat mats), varying degrees of light – and probably a lot of other variables that I don’t remember.

What I concluded is that germinating vegetable seeds is quite easy and all the methods I tried worked reasonably well – of course as long as I followed moderate (indoor) temperatures and provided a consistently moist (not soaking) environment. For me, I use whatever method is convenient and easy for me.

I’m wondering … is germinating cannabis seeds significantly different from germinating vegetable seed?

the paper towel method with ziploc bag how many paper towels do i need to put one feminized photoperiod marijuana seed? And i was told to blow exhale air into the ziploc bag to keep the humidity up and to spray so it never goes dry. How long should i keep it in a small glass with distilled water before dumping the seed out into a paper towel with a ziplock bagj And once in the zip lock bag how often should i check my seed/seeds? And how long should they take to germinate into seedlings?

  15. Kofi 青龙 Reynaldo on May 15, 2022 at 6:10 pm

If you want to germinate, should you leave it in the liquid longer or on the paper towel longer?

  16. Christine Parker on May 15, 2022 at 6:11 pm

After the paper towel germination method my tap root separated from my seed. Now what?

Thanks. What’s that technique called when you pinch and bend parts of the stem?, it sort of swells it up and it’s supposed to help the plant somehow

  37. dalan wanbdiska on May 15, 2022 at 6:34 pm

I moisten the top layer of soil and then add seed half inch in middle of pot. Cover lightly and water again lightly. I added a layer of saran wrap over the pot and in 3 days they appear out of the dirt. Just a different way.

I’m going to try the seaweed. I had only 2 seeds sprout a taproot after 48 hours in the dark under moist paper towel. maybe I just got a bad batch, but it was a terrible grow run now that it’s legal in VA.

  50. Scott 3769 on May 15, 2022 at 6:53 pm

24-48 hours = over night? …no explanation of why liq seaweed. Good vid tho, would just like more clarity
