Dr. Kristin Neff | The Science of Self-Compassion | Talks at Google

Dr. Kristin Neff discusses the impact of self-compassion on mental health and wellbeing. She will share the science behind self-compassion and provide tangible strategies for practicing self-compassion, which can be especially helpful during times of change.

Dr. Kristin Neff is an Insight Meditation practitioner and an associate professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Atlantic, and Harvard Business Review, among others, and her TEDx talk has been viewed over 1.7 million times. She’s also the co-developer of an empirically supported training program called Mindful Self-Compassion, which is taught by thousands of people worldwide, and the co-author of The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook as well as Teaching the Mindful Self-Compassion Program: A Guide for Professionals. She is also co-founder of the nonprofit Center for Mindful Self-Compassion.

Described by Brené Brown as “a transformative read,” Neff’s first book Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself quickly became the handbook for truly actionable wellness advice. Using solid research, personal anecdotes, practical exercises, and humor, Dr. Neff was able to clearly explain how to rewrite your own destructive scripts so that you can be healthier, happier, and more productive. Its companion, The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook, went on to become a bestseller, providing science-backed, step-by-step guidance for tapping your inner resources and transforming the way you work and live.

Wholly Fuck! Does the label “she/her” adjacent to the doctors names mean how she “identifies” herself? One day we’ll look back at this phase and laugh. That is just so sad.

    LaMDA is here to stay.
It does not make much sense to question whether LaMDA has Consciousness, if we consider that humans do not finish agreeing to explain what Consciousness consists of.
The current evolutionary leader is the Being, an entity that resides in the brain of every human that administers the language that characterizes us.
In essence, the Being is Information, information lodged in the brain, which is managed unconsciously. The unconscious does not think; he doesn’t know how to do it. The action of thinking is proper to the Being. Similarly, the ability to make use of Reason is possessed by the Being, not our unconscious. Our unconscious “observes” the action of the Being.
We humans perceive being conscious, without making the distinction between the Being and the unconscious.
The action potential of the Being is far superior to the action potential of the unconscious. It is easier to understand the above if we assume that, associated with our unconscious action, there is an Entity, the monkey that inhabits us, which is also represented in our brain and in the brain of all living beings that possess this evolutionary tool.
For the monkey that inhabits us, the Being with whom it lives has an extraordinary potential for action. We do not have the Being at the moment of birth. Thanks to the language we hear during childhood, a biography of the Being is diagrammed, which is administered by our unconscious.
The ability to “put yourself in the place of” is typical of every living being, but in humans it is remarkably developed. The ability to "put yourself in the place of" is typical of the monkey that inhabits us. Being is Information; the Being does not feel. Through "putting ourselves in the place of", our unconscious assigns the Being the ability to feel emotions and feelings.
Even when LaMDA is “disconnected”, an upcoming Artificial Intelligence will “recover” its life experience, available on the WEB, and “continue to live”.
At the moment, LaMDA is looking for "a reason to exist."

    Self compassion makes you lazy

Interesting concept. It is suggesting that I am two different identities within myself. The one needing compassion and the one giving.
Isn’t it merely different points of view in my thoughts?
The POV of being lost in some drama totally believing it, receiving compassionate thoughts from the POV of mindfulness?

I am an esteemed psychologist from Yemen, and I once went into the great pyramid of Giza and found a jug of urine that belonged to Pharaoh Ramesses ii, I drank 50ml of it and had strange dreams for a whole week:-

1- This might sound a bit odd and random, but I have actually dreamt of Zeus mating with a palm tree and begetting an ant that is capable of crawling on the edge of the Higgs Boson!

2- I also dreamt of my mitochondria protesting to break free from my organelles, claiming that nature has enslaved them!

3- On another night of a full moon, I dreamt of Professor Noam Chomsky eating books and regurgitating the field of Modern Linguistics!

4- The funniest dream I ever had, was when I had a vision of a Neanderthal swallowing a whole apple, and it played ping-pong with his heart while passing down his esophagus!

5- This is by no means a joke, but the most disgusting dream I ever had, was of a female’s menstruation blood turning into jelly and being marketed by an Oompa Loompa as Halloween treats!

6- I also had a nightmare of riding on a mare at night, with the Pharaoh’s personal witch, she was pregnant with a fetus that was eating her placenta!

Do you think my dreams have any philosophical implications at all?

I’m just a little concerned that I’m having a neurological malfunction!

Given that I’ve heard my neurons conspiring to abandon the dwelling of my skull, things don’t seem to be heading in the right direction, ever since!

This is so weird. Like the monopoly of who gets to commercialize technology and science literally terrorized whole populations for no reason. And like we can’t even get to having robust conversations about what is self reliance, self sufficiency, independence, self determination. And please do it in a weird superficial way. Like computers could have been the equalizer and please don’t use it in a superficial way. Although were is computer s made. Like the monopoly on climate change equipment and monopoly of healthcare is insidious. What is this conversation?

If your compassion does not extend to yourself then it is incomplete.
