A Legacy Cannabis Conversation: Reflecting on the Early Days of Legalization

As marijuana legalization continues to spread across the United States and the world, it is important to take a moment to reflect on how far we have come. Today, we have a special guest interview featuring a conversation between Miggy and Farmer Tom Lauerman. They will discuss the early days of medical legalization in California and Washington State, and how those states played a crucial role in paving the way for federal legalization. This is a unique opportunity to dive into the history of cannabis through the experiences of someone who has been there since the beginning.

Tom has seen the cannabis industry evolve considerably over the years. He started growing marijuana for patients before legalization in California, moving on to become an advocate for legalizing medical marijuana in Washington State.

Tom says he was immediately drawn to the idea of using cannabis to help people in need, when he started growing cannabis for himself as a patient .

The conversation turns to Washington State, where Tom moved in 2002 after the state passed its own medical cannabis law. Tom recalls how challenging those early days of legalization were, with many growers and advocates facing criminal charges. Despite the legal hurdles, Tom continued to work as a grower and advocate.

Today, Tom is a personal farmer and educator, focusing on teaching the next generation of growers how to cultivate sustainable, quality crops. He runs the Hemp Farming Academy, which offers online courses on all aspects of industrial hemp farming, from planting and harvesting to marketing and distribution. Tom admits he’s excited for the future of cannabis, adding that seeing the industry finally shedding its reputation as a “dangerous drug” is incredible.

Looking back on the early days of cannabis activism and legalization can offer us valuable insights into where we are today, and where the industry is headed. Tom’s experiences as a pioneer in the cannabis movement illustrates how the tireless work of growers, advocates, and patients helped transform the perception of marijuana from a criminal activity to a legitimate medication. We are excited to see where the future of cannabis takes us and are grateful for those like Tom who have spent countless hours working to make the industry what it is today.
