Are Floating Seeds Dead?

Are Floating Seeds Dead?

I’ve always been told that if a seed floats it won’t germinate but seeing as a whole lot of my seeds floated this year I decided to test it out. Surely the seeds that I harvested last season and stored properly can’t almost all be dead can they?

I have a bunch of unopened seed packs for the 2009 growing season my mum gave me. I planted about 24 of the Eggplants and none came up. I just threw the rest of the packet into the water and only a few floated. A bit strange, so I swirled them around knowing surface tension has something to do with it when dealing with very light seeds, and all but one sank then I swirled them around again where all sank. I will check on them in 12h.
