Auto-Flowering vs Feminised: Which is best for you?

Auto-Flowering vs Feminised: Which is best for you?

Which is best for you – autoflowering or photoperiod cannabis plants?

Like so many aspects of growing cannabis, decisions are ultimately made based on personal choice. Well, either that or a total lack of knowledge and understanding!

Here we have yet another important decision to be made, but is it really a simple decision to make? We actually think it is.

You see, photoperiod cannabis plants require more skill, time, commitment and expertise than auto flowering plants.

You need to be especially careful when you change the lighting schedule in order to change the growth of the plant from leaves and stem, to the production of flowers and subsequent, juicy, trichome-rich buds.

Ordinarily, for photoperiod plants you would have an 18:6 lighting schedule for the first five or six weeks, then you switch to a 12:12 schedule when growing indoors.

The cycle is slightly different and takes much longer when growing outdoors.

With autoflowering plants, it seems that a 24:0 lighting schedule can work best, right through from seedlings to harvesting, though if you are super-cost-conscious, you can have an 18:6 schedule of light and darkness.

So, for hassle-free cannabis, you’d think that autoflowering varieties were a ‘no brainer’, only they’re not.

That’s because there is always a trade-off for convenience, and here that trade-off is yield.

You see, autoflowering plants generally tend to be smaller in size when they reach maturity.

And, the smaller the plant, the smaller the crop.

So, ultimately, autoflowering plants are great for those of you who have never grown cannabis before, who don’t have the time and ability to carefully control lighting schedules, or if you are not looking for a bumper yield.

Photoperiod cannabis plants are great for those of you who like to be fully involved in he growing process and who have gained sufficient experience to know what to do in order to maximise both yield and quality of cannabis produced.
Both photoperiod and auto flowers have their pros and cons, and its really down to you to decide on which best suits your requirements.

    Auto flower is CRAP 🤣

  3. @rakimpowell9436 on February 20, 2024 at 5:36 am

There is no such thing as auto seeds. I have a northern lights auto. I had to force her into flowering. That’s not N auto seed

Photo period is the only way. More terpines and cannibinoids. Higher THC.

Auto flower is no light problem for veging for about 8 weeks. Then you want to take care of the lighting for the flowering stage.

    I’m definitely a photo guy

  10. @Kick_Rocks_ on February 20, 2024 at 5:48 am

I’ve gotten very decent yields from autos.

  11. @bessrock on February 20, 2024 at 5:48 am

Autos get roughly the same yield as indoor photos. 4 to 6 ozs per plant is the goal

  12. @bokamaru on February 20, 2024 at 5:50 am

I’m looking to grow both indoors and outdoors and I live in Canada with a relatively short growing season out in the wild. Autos will suit me perfectly for outdoors as they develop more quickly but I’ll have more control over a photoperiod plant indoors. Being able to trigger flowering with photoperiods is hugely advantageous in a grow tent where space is at a premium.

I just got so used to auto I just do them and I gonna put photos in the garden every summer

autoflowers are better if you do not re-pot them. My advice would be to grow them from seed in the pot you intend to flower them in. photo period are by far the best for quality and yield as the genetics are more stable. I always choose photo period, [ purple queen sold by royal queen seeds is 100% my favourite strain] because they grow much bigger and produce more flower, with the added bonus, the lights are not on as long, so it works out cheaper on the electricity bill. you can also take cuttings from photo period and not with autoflower.

I prefer to grow autoflowers.. no need to worry about light leaks.

Figure out both, combining them is work though

I am learning cannabis by growing autos

  23. @TommyGordon82579 on February 20, 2024 at 6:03 am

I usually grow 2 autos with every 4 photos due to convenience. 8 weeks total for autos while photos require a good 5 weeks JUST VEG.

  24. @hereszonny7411 on February 20, 2024 at 6:03 am

Has anyone tried to cross breed an Autoflower with a photoperiod ? How do the offspring grow Auto or Photo ?✌🇦🇺

  25. @wademacdonald106 on February 20, 2024 at 6:05 am

Photoperiod plants. Great video also. Keep them coming

  26. @yodayoda4976 on February 20, 2024 at 6:07 am

it would depend on which strain, some are just a pain the ass to grow indoors or out.some you can pretty much set and forget if planting outdoors, you could even use a cover if you want lighting changes outdoors and some of those auto strains are also pretty hefty producers planted outdoors with a bit of tlc

  27. @raymondmead6109 on February 20, 2024 at 6:09 am

I like both I have no issues with neither or…
You have to learn one way or the other on how they grow, rather it’s a photo or auto 🙂
because if you make a mistake with the auto flower you can definitely hurt your plant and there’s a slow recovery time especially when they’re already set on a one-way track…
and photos you can correct some mistakes…
    Ying and yang
for me I’m 100% blind I’m still learning this year I finally grew some monster plants but I’m trying to grow for quality and not quantum tea and next year my grow will be even better especially with both auto and photo… now that I know what To do, It takes a lot of mistakes to learn… lol lol happy growing from gardening blind…

  28. @gregmiller9710 on February 20, 2024 at 6:10 am

i’m on my 4th grow, one auto and 3 feminized plants that were free, getting ready change the lighting from 18/6 to 12/12 in a couple of days…the auto has been budding for about 2 weeks so we’ll see what comes out in a couple of months…^^

  29. @dustymiller3498 on February 20, 2024 at 6:10 am

With no disrespect to anyone in particular but autoflowers are for people who don’t know how to grow real pot 🍁🔥🍁

  30. @truckerhatadventures5649 on February 20, 2024 at 6:10 am

I am growing Durban Poison .. stativa. ❤

  31. @Wickedstickyflowers on February 20, 2024 at 6:12 am

They both have a time and place in my garden
Although photos have given me the best bud and yields

  32. @thekindbudkid5264 on February 20, 2024 at 6:15 am

Auto flowers are more fickle, smaller yields, less taste and terpenes., lower thc and cbd. You can’t transplant autos without stunting them ruining them

  33. @peterschnabel175 on February 20, 2024 at 6:15 am

Photo periods my favorite more skillz

  34. @davidmackieson4609 on February 20, 2024 at 6:15 am

    Both

  38. @dannymack1196 on February 20, 2024 at 6:20 am

I’m definitely a photoperiod grower. Idk I just think it’s easier and you have all the time in the world to let her recover from stress. But I do have a couple NYC Diesel and OG Kush auto’s going right now and I’m definitely liking those auto strains. But I give my auto’s a 18/6 light schedule through the whole life cycle of the plant. But to each his/her own. 😤💨😎🤟🏻💚

When u get better at growing u will find auto-flowers can yield 4-12 oz per plant if u train them and optimize their inputs & environment

  45. @GeminiTwynns on February 20, 2024 at 6:26 am

Currently I am experimenting with different varieties. Auto flower, feminized, and regular. But I am really interested in hemp for fiber grow. Do you or will you be publishing any video’s on different types of hemp? Please and thank you.
I would also like to add that I am growing for me personally, not looking for any profit whatsoever, I am seeking what works specifically focused on my individual medical needs. I want to create my own strain. I read that if we place seed in our mouth it can make the seed download your beneficial systemic profile and activate a connection explicitly for your molecular system. I am enthralled with this idea.

  46. @petermyers479 on February 20, 2024 at 6:29 am

It’s a no brainer. You’re right. Perfectly described.
