I have successfully started lots of beets indoors (grown in clumps, per Charles Dowling), mostly to spare them from various bugs and critters when they are tiny. Will be experimenting with radishes this year. Have started pumpkins, squashes, melons — all successfully (about mid April)… If I did not, I would not get the harvest since our last frost date is May 15th and first frost date is Oct.

Leggy and die. It happens! Listen to the man. I failed last year. Not enough sunlight! Won’t make that mistake again.

  3. @NubianP6 on February 25, 2024 at 7:03 am

I thought I was homefree…and then he mentioned radishes. 😞

Living in Montana, Ive had to start my pepper and tomatoes indoors but its because its Neccessary due to our short growing season!

  5. @emilyemm8460 on February 25, 2024 at 7:05 am

I really needed to hear that last one…I was over here thinking…well if they are in a big enough pot…why not?? But I hadn’t considered the transplant shock. This will be my first year starting a bunch of tomatoes & peppers indoors…wish me luck 😅

  6. @citymamaontheback40 on February 25, 2024 at 7:07 am

Yes please make a PART 2. These are all good reminders, even after years of gardening we have to wait so long every year in Canada to plant so some things are forgotten!, Thankyou

If UV light is necessary to photosynthesis than the UV coating on polycarbonate panels for a greenhouse are useless? Hmmm.
I’m actually trying to prevent up-potting because of time, cost and production of the plant. Adding 2weeks to last frost date because we normally will have a frost after that date. I am preventing a jungle and ensuring I have normal sized plants at transplanting time. Those warm weather plants will be set back if you plant out when it’s too cold. Plus I’m just tired of the covering of plants when frost anxiety kicks in. Work smarter not harder.
I also am using 2” pots for peppers and tomatoes. I have some 3” square pots just in case. The square fit better than round solo cups and no poking drain holes. I don’t like trays that are solid unless you are only using them to germinate and up-pot right away. If you leave the plants in small cells they shade each other and another reason to not mix varieties.
Lol, starting normally direct sown vegetables inside, I see that all the time and wonder, Why?

This is my first time hearing you also it’s my first time dealing with planting seeds which was actually my husband’s project. He just had another project and I realized that the vegetable seeds were not being watered I was concerned about a lot of things when I got involved which you are addressing a lot of them. We were given the green shelving with the grow lights on and I’m concerned about everything you mentioned temperature I think my husband wasn’t watering them enough. So my hope is that can we fix this? It’s probably a month since he planted the vegetables. Can I take the radishes and root vegetables and other things you mentioned such as the melons and plant them out in the garden now? I pray they didn’t die. Today is May 10th. They haven’t come up yet my husband did add more soil a week ago over the top of the seeds. I know we have to look up how deep to put the seed probably not very deep. I look forward to learning what to do. I just don’t know if I need to buy new seeds or try to fix the problem that I have so that the ones I have currently will grow.

Starting the seeds indoors is crucial here in Iceland this summer we got 60 day’s summer before first frost in early August, 90 days without frost is good if we are lucky and get a good summer. Thanks for the light lesson.

  10. @Abrentson on February 25, 2024 at 7:12 am

How about strawberries? Would you recommend starting strawberry seeds indoors?

  11. @EDLaw-wo5it on February 25, 2024 at 7:13 am

Part 2 would work. We want more. Havagudun Mark.

  12. @cathyknaffle6507 on February 25, 2024 at 7:17 am

Yes part 2 would be wonderful.

  13. @leannefortney3516 on February 25, 2024 at 7:19 am

It’s interesting because I just watched your latest video and I think you switched your perception of pot sizes over the years. LOL! Lessons learned.

  14. @loul8897 on February 25, 2024 at 7:19 am

Why put them outside? Grow indoors

  15. @samanthaelizabeth9631 on February 25, 2024 at 7:19 am

So, I purchased the type of indoor starters that go straight into the ground, it decomposes, are those okay?

  16. @kristinefortier2381 on February 25, 2024 at 7:19 am

How can you tell if your plant is stressed? Specially before you put them in the ground and after you put them in the ground? Thanks in advance ❤. I’ve learned a lot since watching a couple of your videos. I’ve been helping my dad with his garden since he has copd

  17. @happydeux2254 on February 25, 2024 at 7:20 am

"Lumens are for humans", you really need to be using Lux as a measurement if you’re working with grow lights. If you want to really get grow lights dialled in, you need to have an idea of the PAR (Photosynthetic Active Radiation) values for your light and calculate the DLI (daily light integral).

  18. @marianagabel8361 on February 25, 2024 at 7:21 am

    Thank you Luke!

  19. @ndbg46881 on February 25, 2024 at 7:22 am

I agree with everything you said here! I know it is an older video, but we (Master Gardeners) are doing a seed starting workshop next week and I’m just looking for any tidbits I can find that I may not know (I am a "mature" gardener but always looking to learn)

  20. @ssergeant9682 on February 25, 2024 at 7:22 am

what about transitioning aquaponics plants to the outdoors?

  21. @vikingbeard on February 25, 2024 at 7:25 am

I watched your recent similar video and it seems you’ve changed your mind about the ideal size of containers?

Question I can’t find any info on, can I start seeds outside in sunny area? I live in the south, which is very warm humid climate

  25. @mattthompson3172 on February 25, 2024 at 7:26 am

  26. @raqueltrinchet9347 on February 25, 2024 at 7:26 am

Please make a video for Florida gardeners. There’s A lot for winter inside the home planting but we have sun early. Please 🎉😂. In the summer so much sun will burn the plants. Please

  27. @dennisx4492 on February 25, 2024 at 7:27 am

I really enjoy watching you talk about plants. 😍

  28. @paulenehoag9690 on February 25, 2024 at 7:27 am

    What about using heat mats?

  29. @kaylaclark9135 on February 25, 2024 at 7:28 am

A lot of the grow lights on amazon dont say the lumens. I just bought one from ipower on amazon that has 6400k t5. I hope it wasnt a waste of money 🤷

  30. @johnwakamatsu3391 on February 25, 2024 at 7:28 am

I agree that you need to start growing seeds very early in the season or need to have a good indoor greenhouse. I live in Southern California and can start seeds late in the season but there is no point growing plants at the wrong time of the year.

  31. @clynthia0510 on February 25, 2024 at 7:28 am

Thank you, Luke. With this video, you just saved me a lot of time, money, stress, and effort. I don’t have enough space or light, and I was about to try to start seeds indoors.
I’m still new to gardening, and I have not grown enough of anything to have a meal yet. But I will one day soon.

  32. @baylengreeniscool on February 25, 2024 at 7:31 am

Just foudn this…Thanks so much. Finally figuring out that I didnt know anything when I started mine. They are probably all going to die on me. Next year Ill be getting the 3 inch cups. I dont think i have time now. IDK. Im in VA. Do u think I hav time or no..? 7a zone

  33. @bertarnoldo5199 on February 25, 2024 at 7:34 am

    @MIgardener

  34. @bertarnoldo5199 on February 25, 2024 at 7:35 am

So I bought the grow light you have next to you in this video but the bulbs only reach 1100 lumen. Is there a bulb I can get that puts out enough lumens and fits this setup?

  35. @Camh1968 on February 25, 2024 at 7:37 am

Hello. I want to grow seeds and vegetables in my backyard shed. The shed has 2 x skylight panels. If I grow these plants under an adequate grow light setup inside this shed, will the plants still yearn to seek the dispersed sunlight coming through those skylight panels and become leggy?

  36. @tammy707 on February 25, 2024 at 7:37 am

I planned on doing all the bad mistakes. Thank you for this video. Change of plans

  37. @simpson6700 on February 25, 2024 at 7:39 am

Yeah… I might have planted my seeds too early this year, it’s my first year with grow lights and i got a bit too excited.

  38. @BrendaBodwin on February 25, 2024 at 7:39 am

Watching this on May 12, 2022. We had two blizzard, the first week this month, and last week of last month, (normal), night freezes,( normal), this week, flooding/over saturating rains.(normal) We have to start inside, if we want a complete garden. You are 100% on light. Learned the light thing, the hard way, very hard way, years ago. 3 plantings before I figured out I needed more lights. This year, I added 2 tactical lights, and you wouldn’t believe how well that worked out. They charge on a cell charger. I still have normal grow lights, I just added them, and it made a huge difference in my leafy veggies. Huge difference. 😁👍🏻

  39. @jamiescountryliving on February 25, 2024 at 7:40 am

    Thank you

  40. @demonichalf on February 25, 2024 at 7:41 am

@4:14 I seen an orb come down from the upper right side of you.

  41. @honestbusiness1371 on February 25, 2024 at 7:42 am

Herbs and tomatoes are very easy to start indoor without grow lights. Only have about 7 hours of light from my window. Done it for 40 years.

  42. @xJuiCYxxJaYx on February 25, 2024 at 7:42 am

I think all veggies that dont need pollination can be grown indoors
    Am I wrong?

  43. @chadolson6889 on February 25, 2024 at 7:43 am

where can you get the 3in containers?

  44. @BosuxRedsux on February 25, 2024 at 7:44 am

Can one start seedlings in the back of a car receiving sunlight?

  45. @asablue4816 on February 25, 2024 at 7:44 am

I also use LED lights that I bought from Amazon for about $45 each set of 6 – 4ft lights. These have worked great for a few years now starting all my seedlings. Toms, peppers, cukes, squash etc have thrived under these lights..2200ml 6500k.

  46. @axe-addict on February 25, 2024 at 7:49 am

What about when you put the seeds in the humidity dome and they sprout? How long before we transplant into a solo cup? I’ve had seedlings "dampen off" after I put them in the tray, they sprout, then when I take them out of they start wilting. Idk if it’s cause I didn’t harden then off or what??? What’s the general rule when starting cannabis seeds indoors with one of the mondi domes, they sprout, and then what? I have a couple that are a little leggy but should I harden them off first, or plant to a solo cup and keep it under the dome and slowly release more air from the dome slots until it matches the temperature in the room right?

  47. @jeffliberty8830 on February 25, 2024 at 7:52 am

You forgot about the need to start seeds inside if outdoor temps are too low or too high due to geography and time of year.

  48. @vonbvonb3412 on February 25, 2024 at 7:53 am

so germinating is not to be done in the dark?😕

  49. @cathyknaffle6507 on February 25, 2024 at 7:54 am

Can we buy organic beginning vegetable plants I don’t see them anywhere.

  50. @78fordtruck4 on February 25, 2024 at 7:55 am

You’re still wet behind the ears gardening takes experience and when you live in a country where you have a short summers starting seeds indoors is the only way to go stop telling people what you don’t want them to do most people probably know more than you do
