Breaking News: HHS Releases Mind-blowing Cannabis Rescheduling Memo!

The big memo is in the headlines again this week with the announcement that the HHS will be releasing an un-redacted version of the memo an attorney pursued litigation to force the agency to produce the document. A highly redacted version was released last year which amounted to almost no information for the public. This followed a FOIA request that missed the deadline to produce the documents and was the basis for the lawsuit.

The DEA has recently responded to the recommendation by claiming they are now conducting their own review of the schedule status of cannabis as a schedule I substance. Their review should be scientifically based on available medical data and public policy. This could potentially lead to a major shift in the cannabis industry as it would open up more opportunities for research, production, and distribution. The cannabis industry has been rapidly growing in recent years, with more and more states legalizing its use for both medical and recreational purposes. This memo could be the impetus for actual policy changes that lead to legalization at the federal level.

One of the biggest obstacles facing the cannabis industry is its federal classification as a schedule I substance, meaning it is considered to have no medical value and a high potential for abuse. This has limited research on the plant and hindered efforts to fully legalize it at the federal level. However, if cannabis were to be reclassified as a schedule III substance, it would join other drugs such as codeine and ketamine which are deemed to have some medical benefits.

Chronic pain is definitely a real issue with our country. I hurt myself 2 years ago, went through 2 surgeries, neither fixed my issue, was sent to a pain management specialist who wanted me to take a bunch of drugs like gabapentin and some other pills. I ended up getting a medical marijuana card in my state, and the pain relief left me do a lot of things that I used to not be able to do because it hurt too much. But I vape it when I am doing lots of physical activity to help numb the pain. My hope is that I will build up enough muscle to maybe help alleviate my pain. But yeah.. federal law is completely annoying with marijuana. WOuld be nice to use my credit card to purchase flower or concentrate.

  17. @honeycombhydro on March 10, 2024 at 6:35 am

I see this as a potentially apocalypse level event for the industry as we know it.

Let’s cut to the chase with it… there is ZERO precedence for state level programs controlling a Schedule 3 drug.

Vicodin, Testosterone, Anabolic Steroids, Ketamine, and Suboxone. Those are also Schedule 3, and news flash… they are HIGHLY regulated by the doctors, the pharmacists, insurance companies, and more.

Let’s ignore the fact that cannabis is WAY safer, and focus entirely on the framework for those drugs in market.

Small group of giant corporations can produce it. A doctor then prescribes it. Only pharmacies carry it.

While not THAT different than some legal states for cannabis, the current crop of licensed operators aren’t on those special big kid pharma producer lists.

    Oh… and that’s just medical.

Recreational has ZERO to even compare it to.

Alcohol and Tobacco aren’t on the schedule, and have specific oversight from the government. Schedule 3 doesn’t allow this approach. It also prevents Recreational sales in my opinion.

Basically… we are going to watch Pharma absorb and destroy the medical market and the extinction of adult use.

Oh, and let’s go ahead and address the arguments against my points now:

Yes, throwing away the entire system is a huge waste and a lot of work. That doesn’t matter… the fed wants their tax $$$.

No, none of these predictions are guaranteed. A lot can happen. However… the government doesn’t exactly have a good (or even existent) track record for handling cannabis legalization reasonably.

Yes, there will be broader access to a LOT of stuff… but at what cost to the status quo, those who got us this far, and the businesses as they exist now?

    TLDR:

Schedule 3 is handing the entire #cannabis industry as we know it to Pharma, or at the very least risking the government messing it up worse than it already is.

In Alabama the idiots are arguing on medical cannabis no flower .03% thc. Been arguing for more than two years and at the same time you can go to the cbd store and buy legal hemp flower at .03 % thc. Gen :129. And God sed behold I have given you every herb bearing seed which is upon the face of all the earth . That ends the arguing for me.

  20. @BarnCatsandGoldenRetrievers on March 10, 2024 at 6:39 am

Don’t worry about anything schedule three or any of it Chuck Schumer will fix it all.

Chuck Schumer only needs nine GOP votes to pass SAFE. He has had 13 GOP votes for over 2 years.

    Open boarders work!

  30. @elijahbushee9155 on March 10, 2024 at 6:55 am

I think it’s ironic to compare it to alcohol and say it’s less dangerous, but still recommend for schedule 3 even though alcohol isn’t scheduled at all.

it’s the absence of any deaths associated with cannabis, totally SUS.
The staggering amount of bodies littering our streets with those potheads eating Doritos and laughing is truly amazing.
Then add in all the crimes potheads don’t commit, how is the prison industrial complex supposed to thrive with all these cool people abiding by the law while they smoke themselves into giggling fits fit in to the ‘Program’
    I just don’t get it πŸ’¨ ok…I admit I do get it, my good😊

  37. @Terps_N_Trichs on March 10, 2024 at 7:02 am

How are these guys such morons ? Of course they didn’t schedule tobacco or alcohol and they never will when there’s Millions of dollars being spent by lobbyists to make it that way including personal kickbacks to Congress . insider trading and everything, they’re all connected..lobbying is legal, think about that. They’re morons for expecting anything other than corruption ❀

  38. @johnberry2877 on March 10, 2024 at 7:02 am

Rescheduling will be all for nothing unless the rights of employees are fervently protected. The Current job, labor market is strictly against use for any reason. If anyone seeks a career, job that can earn enough to effectively raise a family and secure a decent living you are out of luck if using this medication/ plant. The right to self medicate should and moreover must be protected.
Clearly the current environment must change to protect employees.

I keep reading how mj going Sched III is a good thing. Am I missing something here? I do not want to have to register, get a doctors script or any of that nonsense. Putting your name in the federal system re: mj is a big no-no in my book. Next think you know they are kicking your door at 4AM because the database linked your mj prescription and a gun purchase. It just seems to open up a lotta doors to not-good-ville.

  46. @samirheib1019 on March 10, 2024 at 7:09 am

Why doesn’t the U.S. legalize cannabis as a human right (at federal level) like Canada did. Canada legalized cannabis as a human right due to systematic discrimination.

Doesn’t the U.S. Constitution protect you from systematic discrimination? I thought so..

The fact that cannabis is a first schedule 1 drug in the United Nations Convention on Narcotic Drugs isn’t legally valid because it is based on discrimination, disinformation and propaganda. So the U.S. has no obligation to obey it.

If United Nations Convention on Narcotic Drugs on cannabis was based on medical research and facts then it would be legally valid.

What I was hoping for was information on the reschedule and what it would mean for me personally. What I got was a couple of potheads going on the typical "weed should be legal" rant.
