Cannabis legalization linked to 94% spike in ER visits for traffic injuries: report

New data shows a possible alarming trend when it comes to cannabis use and traffic incidents. A joint study from Ottawa researchers suggests that since cannabis became legal, more people are ending up in hospital emergency departments.

“Since 2010, there has been a very, very large increase in cannabis involvement and traffic injury visits in Ontario. And if you actually look at how that changes year to year going into legalization, this is increasing. This is a growing problem over time,” said Dr. Daniel Myran, lead author of the study.

Data shows that after cannabis became legal, there was a 94 per cent increase in the number of emergency department visits for traffic injuries where cannabis was involved. When COVID-19 happened, there was an even larger jump of 223 per cent when compared to the pre-legalization period.

Global News’ health reporter Katherine Ward has more of the details.

There was also a big increase in the total number of people using cannabis…

  2. Korky on October 13, 2023 at 11:01 pm

The real danger is all these people driving around on prescription pills.

This video is so cring and full of propaganda misinformation

  4. jon tomas on October 13, 2023 at 11:02 pm

This is bogus propaganda. Cannabis "involved" does not equal cannabis "caused." It just means some person in the accident had cannabis in their system, not necessarily the driver, or there was a small amount of cannabis found in the car. – Because the whole country of Canada re-legalized cannabis, a large percentage of the total population will test positive at any given time. That doesn’t mean their consumption caused the accident, although these groups try to make it appear so. —– Cannabis is not alcohol. The preponderance of the research shows cannabis consumption is not a significant cause of auto accidents. — In 2015, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), found that while drunken driving dramatically increased the risk of getting into an accident, there was no evidence that using cannabis heightened that risk.

  5. ShitWrangler on October 13, 2023 at 11:03 pm

Even though Canada has the best test pool for such a study, if anyone remembers our pandemic modeling, we have lost all credibility when it comes to proven data driven scientific results.
I’d await multiple American studies coming out contradicting this nonsense, coupled with their highway driving guidelines already demonstrating far less lethal outcomes especially relative to booze.

  6. Salgood Sam on October 13, 2023 at 11:03 pm

Yeah, that’s at best correlation they didn’t do any deeper work to prove a causal relationship.

And the cause here be it stoned or not, is arrogant idiocy. Not the drugs but the fool who choses to drive impaired.

  7. MaryLynn Metras on October 13, 2023 at 11:05 pm

Stop the use of drinking & drugs while driving and much stiffer penalties are neede No bail Once you’re hooked on drugs or alcohol hard to break the cycle 😢😢😢

  8. Toronto Citizen on October 13, 2023 at 11:06 pm

If you are driving impaired and kill someone, the automatic charge should be first degree murder.

  15. Alex on October 13, 2023 at 11:12 pm

"947 604 traffic injury ED visits … 426 (0.04%) had documented cannabis involvement and 7564 (0.8%) had documented alcohol involvement."

Since Global neglected to mention the *real numbers,* I thought I’d help them do their job (provide information and context).

  16. Joe Madden on October 13, 2023 at 11:13 pm

I know of a short dozen people that live in my building who get high and then drive to work.

According to them, they do everything BETTER whilst stoned.

    Pathetic.

The fact is that smokers are as selfish, disingenuous, hypocritical and murderous as any drunk or other addict.

They’ll NEVER own up to it.

Even after they’ve murdered someone with their car, bike, scooter etc.

As monstrous as the next pig.

  21. Greata Tunafishsandwich on October 13, 2023 at 11:22 pm

Good thing that Trudea has a chauffeur or he’d be driving over people at the indoor Mcdonald’s counter ,for ordering takeout.

Let’s study the difference between alcohol impaired driving and cannabis impaired driving. Both are bad. No one should be driving under the influence of ANYTHING.

    Propaganda

  40. Egzoset on October 13, 2023 at 11:43 pm

That sort of reminds me about Pascal Robidas of Radio-Canada "informing" us that 98 % of indoor cannabis cultures belong to the Asian mafia… Today 94 % about "poisoning", on cannabis, euh…

So who’s living in an "artificial" world, again?? … Poor little traumatized/instrumentalized children! Halloween lasts all year long nowadays.

  41. OneCalmGardener on October 13, 2023 at 11:44 pm

once again, media trying to cause a problem by bringing out percentages. 94% is less than double…. double of what? 1%? ooooo!

All the pot heads freaking out on the thread.

  43. Chestnut2013 P on October 13, 2023 at 11:45 pm

Okay so..as a regular user of cannabis, for pain which I might add.
TAKING ANY AMOUNT.OF WEED DOES NOT TELL YOU TO GET BEHIND THE WHEEL….
    ITS LOGIC SENSE
YOU TAKE ANY INTOXICATING SUBSTANCES YOU DO NOT OPERATE ANY HEAVY MACHINERY..
I’m also a regular user of medications from pain relievers, to muscle relaxants to inflammatory to name a few…
AND AGAIN NONE OF THESE TELL ME TO DO ANYTHING THAT WOULD PUT PEOPLE IN DANGER.

CHOOSING TO DO INCOHERENT THINGS WHILE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ANYTHING IS DUMB.
HOWEVER, MANY PEOPLE DOMT NEED INFLUENCES OF INTOXICANTS TO DO ANYTHING INCOHERENTLY STUPID…
WE LIVE IN AN ERA OF THE MORE STUPID THE MORE VIEWS.
SO BEFORE WE GO BLAMMING OTHER AREAS, LETS TAKE IT TO WHERE IT COUNTS….

Sorry but this as equivalent to a man saying "I don’t how.she got pregnant" or "ot just happened, I don’t know"
REALITY CHECK NO ONE HELD ANYTHING TO YOUR HEAD TO MAKE YOUR DECISIONS..
SO DONT MAKE STUPID ONES AND LETS KEEP EVERYONE ALIVE ❤
