"Safer than humans"… but definitely Dumber than humans.

Humans arediscovering technologies to make them more and more lazy and dependent.

Despite these reports, I’m still impressed that they are able to test these systems in such a challenging driving environment hat SF is. Seasoned drivers in that city are probably used to the driving environment, but it was always a stepped up challenge for for who is used to suburb type neighborhoods.

Why not have a manual override feature for when the vehicle puts on its emergency lights or stops for more than 2 minutes.

Thats the least of San Franciscos problems nowadays.
With crime(including the violent kind)homelessness and rampant drug use at all time highs autonomous driving seems insignificant in the scheme of the bigger picture.
Some cities have viable priorities. Some dont i guess.

  8. G B on May 15, 2023 at 10:04 am

I wonder if they can be carjacked.

  9. atomaboy on May 15, 2023 at 10:05 am

Instead of autonomous vehicles we should start doing remote driving and have taxi drivers drive from a simulator

  22. Alex SF on May 15, 2023 at 10:20 am

One thing that I see missing in this discussion is the rideshare/taxi pilot program that started with Cruise and now with Waymo in SF. I have been driving for a living in SF in one way or another for the past 41 years, and currently I’m driving as a Rideshare driver until I reach full retirement age. I’m impressed with the technology of autonomous cars advancing so rapidly and as I understand AI evolves in a exponential equation pace. Human nature dictates that there’s going to be mistakes by accident or negligence. AI with it’s growing pains and flaws are more predictable. The main issue is infrastructure in cities like SF, Manhattan, London, LA or São Paulo, that at pre-pandemic had 25% of all rideshare rides worldwide. One can’t program AI to intentionally break a traffic law, such as encroaching into bike lanes (permitted to Taxis in California), bus stops, red zones or simply double parking to pickup and drop off passengers without incurring in liability in case of a serious accident. Most swaths in commercial corridors would have to be devoid of parking meters and become passenger loading zones. Currently Cruise will double park anywhere without consideration of traffic flow, (not to say that rideshare doesn’t do the same), but in order to to incur with the wrath of drivers, rideshare drivers at least try to get out of the way the best they can, also incurring on the consequences of traffic tickets and liability insurance increased premiums. Currently in California the police is not able to give a autonomous vehicle a ticket since there’s no one to sign for it. Driverless car are here to stay and eventually traffic accidents will decrease due to it, meanwhile technology is ahead of both infrastructure and legislation.

  23. Crazy Otto on May 15, 2023 at 10:21 am

So they stop long enough to steal the catalytic converter. Good to know.

  24. hashbrowns on May 15, 2023 at 10:22 am

Looks like cruise is experiencing the same issues as Waymo did few years back

  25. Bryan Walker on May 15, 2023 at 10:23 am

But we need to know the percentage of robot car accidents compared with the percentage of accidents in normal cars. Then express the percentage of accidents relative to the miles travelled by each car class. The type of accident must also be defined.

  30. Devin Walters on May 15, 2023 at 10:32 am

Honestly, that’s one of the first things i’d imagine happening when thinking about driverless vehicles. The a.i. getting confused by something simple that actual drivers wouldn’t and create situations like this or worse.

  31. melapelan on May 15, 2023 at 10:36 am

Some make a lawsuit for disregarding safety as they give you no way to call someone or move it manually

  41. Bryan Strom on May 15, 2023 at 10:41 am

I’m FOR electric vehicles. Wind + solar + grid & home storage. But I’m AGAINST computers controlling everything. I do have criticisms about this reporting, but there should not be control of everything by whoever has control over the most advanced computers. This all s worrisome for different reasons than this story mentions.

Everyone’s crying about it but like it or not, this is how we’re moving forward. Horses didn’t do good with cars on the road, cheaper to rid the horses.
Same concept applies here. Its cheaper to ban manual driven cars. We didn’t do 5g for your pleasure.

Number of cars in the US:
    285 Million.
    Number of vehicle related deaths/year:
    42,795.

Number of guns in the US:
    465 Million.
Number of murders involving guns in the US/year:
    20,138

Which causes more deaths and needs to be addressed?
    Cars.

Yet guns are the hot topic. Why?

The US is imploding because the media decides what topic is important to us, based on how much money they will make, not what’s hurting the country… like…

Number of deaths/year due to medical malpractice:
    435,000

Number of deaths/year related to drug overdoses:
    100,000

Amount of dollars/year the media makes from advertising from pharmaceutical companies and healthcare providers:
    *100′ of BILLIONS OF DOLLARS!*

Amount of dollars/year the media makes on advertising from the firearms industry:
    0

  49. DM on May 15, 2023 at 10:49 am

…Why would they test them beginning in one of the busiest cities in the most populated states in the country? Also, why can’t these billion dollar companies pay someone 15 bucks and hour to cruise around in the car in case they need to over the system. Then, everything could be logged, and the situation could be rectified.

…And these guys calling these shots make tens of millions every single year. Smh.

They need to perfect gps before these cars. Gps takes all drivers to the street behind my house when you type in my address. There is no entrance to my property back there. My house is 40 years old and has always had the same address. Gps is not even smart enough to know it is on the same road. I have to use my neighbors address when ordering Uber so I can be picked up and dropped off at the front. Crazy. Anyone know how I can correct this? Do I contact google maps?
