Farmers In the Field: Genetic Drift & Pollen Prophylaxis for Cannabis / Ganjier

Farmers In the Field: Genetic Drift & Pollen Prophylaxis for Cannabis / Ganjier

During a recent Ganjier sojourn to the spectacular Fallen Oak Farm legacy cultivation in Humboldt, CA, instructor Wendy Kornberg and cultivator Jesse Hill discuss the concepts of filial (F1/F2/F3) generation, genetic drift, seed vs. clone propagation, and novel methods of cannabis pollen application and prophylaxis.

I like Wendy she’s full of good advice as someone who suffers from horrible pollen related allergies I can tell you that right after a rain I’m a happy boy

So, what if you have 13 fingers on each leaf?

Hybrid vigor + surplus war chemicals= the 20th century big ag disaster. The temptation to freeze breeding progress, create sterile "parent" lines, and, finally, take ownership of life forms (the 90s) was too great to the farmers and coporations they let control them. It seems it may be best to NOT buy hybrid seed (vegetables, flowers, herbs) to grow for non breeding purposes (or support hybrid profiteering, life form patenting seed companies) or else watch the breeds available to all shrivel over time. Plus it seems to make it easier for coporations to play the patent game and shut down every grow and seize every growers whole life through the courts once federal laws are normalized.

I was also taught the paper bag method. A brown paper bag like you get with tall boy beer is perfect it’s longer and skinny the size of a nice big cola. You stick it over your male and shake it so pollen sticks to the bag then you tie off the end go to your female garden and do your pheno hunt to find which specific plants you want to breed and you slide that paper bag over the cola you choose and tie the end off with a piece of twine even give the branch a good shake, then leave the bag on there for a day or two. Come back to remove the bags and mark your branches as seeded with tape or whatever just to know which ones are seeded and just like Jason said harvest the plant and leave those branches that you seeded an extra week or as long as the weather permits just to make sure those seeds are as healthy and mature as possible and rarely will you accidentally spread pollen where you don’t want it. I feel like leaving the pollen bag on for a day or so gives the plant a chance to collect all the pollen from the bag so when you pull it off you don’t see a cloud of dust fly out or contaminate your good sensi. Hope this helps someone and lucky breeding my friends

Thank you again for sharing so much here, it’s benefiting much more than us, this is for the future as well! I return every once in a while to get a progressed point of view and grow better plants all along the way! Thx! Tell mom I stay high!

Ok guys, hopefully you read this and give me some breeding advice. So i have one "strand" that the pollinated buds rotted before the plant was mature. I have another that is dropping mature seeds before the actual plant is done.
Kinda crazy, any feedback would be much appreciated.
Love the vids you guys know yer shit. Breeding is fascinating. I have been cultivating for 25+ years mostly indoors. Now switched to outdoor, trying to create a strain to call my own here in south western Canada (BC).
So far so good, finnishing Sept 20 the latest. Just cut the first one down today, this year! Aug. 21. Thanks so much hope to hear from ya!!! Peace much love!

  24. @FreemanJoe1968 on June 10, 2024 at 12:03 pm

Very informative, I can now throw out the pollen I had drying out on a paper plate that’s been sitting out for over a month. I wish this video was out months ago

some of the best kush ive ever had all had 1 and 3 leafers

  28. @mr.wookiesack on June 10, 2024 at 12:10 pm

No cloning. Weird. We keep clones of the best strains. We sts spray to get inbred. If we want to breed it. Otherwise we just keep the strain alive through cloning. I have a special polyploid inbred breeder plant for the next time I get pollen. It is a freak of nature.

  29. @Dubsizzla on June 10, 2024 at 12:10 pm

I just use a paint brush to pollinate. This season I am F2 definitely had a few unicorns.
I didn’t seed the unicorns unfortunately. Breeding is so fun and interesting!!

This girl talking about genetica seems knowledgeable, but it’s a pitty she does not know difference between phenotype and genotype

  33. @eliinthewolverinestate6729 on June 10, 2024 at 12:14 pm

I use colloidal silver to make feminized seeds to see all the gene expressions. To find my unicorns.

  34. @mikesdirtypillow2451 on June 10, 2024 at 12:15 pm

i got a pack of seeds from an outdoor breeder I planted all 10 seeds here in southern saskatchewan canada and i got 1 male and 1 female so i let them both go the male was in a pot and the girl was directly in the ground the male finished its life when the female started to show pre bud i did get some nice sticky potent buds and a seed or two in places this year i planted all the seeds and have maybe 20 plants all in one spot and cant see any males i only prebuds i see buds starting but not as advanced as the plants in the video
I thank you for your videos and awesome knowledge being taught here thank you from saskatchewan i really hope we dont get snow by mid october we are already dropping below 10C at night now

  35. @soulseeker311 on June 10, 2024 at 12:18 pm

I’ve seen 13 finger leaves on my plants before.

  36. @mr.wookiesack on June 10, 2024 at 12:19 pm

Meh. Shiny green vs light green could be from many causes. Some tend to grow lighter green. Sulfur deficit, nitrogen deficit. Idk

  37. @baylenthedogg3242 on June 10, 2024 at 12:19 pm

So only the branch you inoculated becomes seedy? The rest of the plant stays female and produces quality seed free flowers?

  38. @kingdolo23 on June 10, 2024 at 12:19 pm

Slightly weird to take a course on weed and field weed 😅, does course include microscopy work to identify whats in ur soil and compost etc.? Like please tell me its more to it

  42. @soulseeker311 on June 10, 2024 at 12:20 pm

3 leafs are mutations. And can occur from light leak or poor breeding practices
