Grocery giant Loblaws lobbies Ontario government to change cannabis rules

Canada’s Loblaws has been lobbying Ontario’s Ford government to change the rules surrounding cannabis sales, to allow it to get into the marijuana market.

But, some fear if allowed, small businesses will be snuffed out by the grocery giant.

Global’s Queen’s Park bureau chief Colin D’Mello has the details.

Does really really think that people want to go and buy what will be overpriced cannabis while buying overpriced groceries? Guaranteed that they will sell some ‘gourmet’ crappy cannabis products.

These corporations need to be stopped now. There’s a limit for greed.

You know a business is successful when?

  7. @miradinic870 on January 19, 2024 at 4:27 am

So they don’t rip enough profit from food stuffs and other grocery stores staples? Will they go after other kinds of merchandise to pull into their stores? Does their greed know no bounds?

  8. @dixonpinfold2582 on January 19, 2024 at 4:29 am

Why is everyone reacting by calling Loblaws greedy? I don’t get it.
Exactly how many products can a store sell before it merits that label? I need a number.
Remember when they added rotisserie chicken? Was that ‘greedy’? Help me out here.
Calling them greedy seems pointlessly resentful and small.

  9. @user-iv8bm1dh3y on January 19, 2024 at 4:29 am

If loblaws gets into weed market, I sure hope the quality improves.

Pot is SO EASY to grow, I don’t understand why people spend so much $$$ buying it when you can easily harvest a kilogram of bud from just $130 worth of seeds.

  21. @4freess on January 19, 2024 at 4:43 am

These guys have nothing positive to do with cannabis, and never supported it. What you have here is just some greedy suits trying to cash in.

  31. @Corrinaxox on January 19, 2024 at 4:59 am

Can we all just decide to no longer support this greedy, irritating company. Loblaw company contines to show its true values and priorities as it has the past few years .

  32. @tillyburton5402 on January 19, 2024 at 4:59 am

Boycott spending there, I shop Safeway and Walmart. I would rather the American company rip me off…I expect it, but a Canadian own company screwing Canadian for a profit, well I still choice as a consumer, and I chose American own company to make money off me. Boycott all Loblaws own stores, can’t rip you off, if you don’t spend there.

  33. @eneshadzic3778 on January 19, 2024 at 5:01 am

  40. @mytenthdimension on January 19, 2024 at 5:08 am

Loblaws wants to monopolize another industry. Surprise surprise.

But the double standard for selling weed vs. beer/wine is ridiculous. Let the free market sort it out…

  41. @user-qe2ro3yi2b on January 19, 2024 at 5:08 am

Between corporate bullying, 💩 quality, price gouging and in some stores availability ~ they’re also forcing a return to old sKo0L ways for so many.
