How Many Roots Does a Cannabis Clone Need

How Many Roots Does a Cannabis Clone Need?

Professor DeBacco

When is a clone adequately rooted?
This is a common question and has a variable answer.
Questions to consider…
What substrate (or lack of) is the plant growing in?
Where is the plant going?
How old is the plant?

With the variability, images will be provided as a comparison for evaluation

Goal of a quality clone has…
A well developed root system
Roots have branching
Length of roots support plant growth

“Ideal” Rooting
Even rooting on all sides
Roots are starting to branch
White coloration
Makes for easy transfer to selected substrate

Starting
While these could be transferred at this stage, waiting another few days would be recommended.

The aeroponic cloner is an ideal environment so the roots will likely develop faster to ease the plant transition process

Just Past Prime
Here there are many roots and this clone is a little past prime transfer.
*By only a day or so
This does not mean it will transfer poorly, but the multiple root hairs forming are the main site of nutrient absorption, so upon transfer there is likely to be some damage.
Plant will likely be able to recover well, but be aware that it is the fine roots that is where the majority of the nutrient and water absorption occurs in plants.
More branching is better than thicker root structure.

Too Many Roots
This would be an example of too many roots

The grower should still transfer these to the next stage, but realize these are a little past the prime time to make the transfer.

Plants will likely perform well, but may be a little slow as they make the transition which is why this is past prime.

Clone can go quickly from no root to too many so daily inspections are recommended to catch the ideal day to make the transfer.

I grow in rockwool when cloning and I wait until I see about 2 or 3 roots poking out of any of the sides of the cube before transplanting (then into coco). The transplanting and adapting back to normal (aka the transplant shock) is all fine, but the actual cloning process seems to take forever. Really need to dial in my method. My goal is to have a shorter/quicker rooting time. So far, day 7, and still nothing poking out. But, all leaves are green, no drooping, nothing’s dry, humidity is level, light intensity is great. I’m wondering what could be my issue..

Would the long rooted one be well suited for DWC? TIA

you’re the only person that gives clear concise information. Seconds after I click play I’m getting the info I was looking for not 5 minutes into the video. Cloning is my next step in growing you help cut down all the static that’s out there thanks!

The subtlety and associated expertise of some of your comments are not lost on me, (and others); namely the extent to which a particular and narrow stage of root development is optimal and quite easily discernible. I NEVER would have known any of that. Excellent knowledge.

You could have over one mill subs-I kinda hate social media but youtube is a great place to find informative videos! Most people are kinda dumb so they need something like a dubstep beat to keep their dopamine levels up and hooked, I’m guessing that is the only reason your not at 1 mill already. I personally prefer your more academic approach, and so do 30 K people. It’s quite the accomplishment in itself. Kudos!

Can you do a video on compost teas for cannabis plants please.
