How Thailand went from war on drugs to cannabis curries – BBC News

Thailand now has one of the world’s most liberal marijuana regimes.

The country legalised cultivating and consuming cannabis in June, reversing a hard-line approach of long prison sentences or even the death penalty for drug offences.

The regime has sparked off a boom in weed-related businesses hoping to cash in on a new customer base.

The BBC’s South East Asia correspondent Jonathan Head reports on what’s behind the dramatic change.

finally some common sense in the world. the war on drugs actually created more criminals than if it wasn’t. and also made criminals millionaires.

The thing is, there are some local powerful political gangs that control products. After the law legally approve the cannabis just one day. There are a lot of cannabis trees put to sell beside the road and market. It doesn’t make any senses that you can grow the seed to the growth tree just only 1 day. Most of them are from the Chitchob family’s farm. Do you think that this law was written to help in medical aspect or give benefits to specific groups of people to make their wealthier.

Also Buriram Thailand is redshirt party controlled who are trying to monopolize the Cannabis business for themself, by controlling the farmer co-operatives, and douse out any other co-operatives in Thailand (Monopolism) and BBC as usual is accepting paid placements as news to promote the monopolists. BBC; you do not understand what goes on backstage in Thailand’s political chessboard.

It’s all about money. Nothing about morals.
Cannabis is a much better substance for recreational use than alcohol.
Alcohol makes people turn a mess of a fool.
Weed just makes you silly, sleepy, and hungry for a short while.
People who are against weed are just clueless.

Wow this is very surprising after how harsh they were previously.
It’s a very clever business decision though – I reckon they will make a hell of a lot of money from this.

I guess it’s just about money rather than health but fair play, other people/countries make money out of things that are far worse for health or the environment. Go Thailand 🇹🇭

As someone with Multiple Sclerosis who uses Cannabis daily to cope with my symptoms this is awesome. I am Canadian and grateful for it being legal here. Thailand making it legal makes me more inclined to travel there as I know I can still access my medicine and enjoy my self instead of being in pain. Great job Thailand.

  26. Cullen McWilson on July 18, 2022 at 1:38 am

If they were giving people such harsh punishments just a little while ago, and now a sudden change – I have trouble trusting the sincerity and stability of anything there.

  29. Dennis Martin on July 18, 2022 at 1:46 am

Why is the UK so far behind

  30. Ajarn Spencer on July 18, 2022 at 1:47 am

The penalties were never so harsh as the west has stated. Before legalisation, a small amount of cannabis would be a 50$ fine first time offender. Punishments in Thailand are less than UK and USA and definitely the harshest, is Singapore. It is not legalized for medical purposes, it is legal for entertainment too so get your facts right British Propaganda Broadcasting Company. Thailand is legal for Recreational Use you berks.

Students locked their classroom to smoke weed. When a teacher tried to stop these students, they became aggressive and try to hit the teacher. I’m not sure if this is fakenews or not but I’m pretty sure that weed doesn’t make people aggressive.
