What We’re Building
The system we’re building is commonly called a dwc hydroponic system. DWC stands for deep water culture.

Most people look for DWC systems without knowing the method is actually just water culture hydroponics. The addition of the word “deep” just means the system is at least 8 to 10 inches deep.

How Does a Deep Water Culture System Work?
A plant is suspended in a net cup above the nutrient solution in the reservoir. The reservoir in this case is a bucket. As the root system of the plant grows it relies on dissolved oxygen in the water to survive.

In the system we’re building, an air pump (aerator) oxygenates the water. Without this aeration, the nutrient solution (water) would become stagnant and a fully submerged root system would die.

  2. William Lalonde on September 30, 2023 at 10:02 pm

You need to pre soak your stones

I drilled my airline hole on the side of the bucket near the top. No tube to change water?

your vidio hasbeensohelpful bought pump but 2 stones wouldn’t work now I see must be same length and other things

From experience, use larger baskets better for supporting larger plants

    Buy a Larger quality
Pump. Mount pump above planter, height. Located in another room or Basement for sound & run a long single hose to a splitter. Also,The Best place to put pump is where people sit and breathe out CO2.
Or Outside where the Co2 level is high. 12 volt or 110 volt small compressor works well. Larger the tank ,makes for less run time on .

Could you grow small cherry tomato plants with this system?

Unfortunately the cost is a lot higher if you’re just starting out. You need to buy nutrients, ph/ec meter, pH down, clay stones, etc.

I ❤️ Baker Creek heirloom Seeds. Thanks for sharing your video

  17. JayR88 on September 30, 2023 at 10:26 pm

Great video. I grew some "tomatoes" in a closet, took some trial and error to dial in but end result was damn good 😊

  18. 0utere on September 30, 2023 at 10:26 pm

Use Black buckets and lids the light will get though the white lids and even possibly those blue buckets and cause issues with algae. Ask me how I know 😉

  19. dwarfhunter on September 30, 2023 at 10:29 pm

Would this system work outside in say my backyard? I was wanting to grow something like strawberries and perhaps corn in a hydroponic system, but I’m not sure if those kinds of plants would be too big or if you can grow something like strawberries where you don’t really harvest the entire plant.

  20. Damion Garey on September 30, 2023 at 10:29 pm

Black buckets and lids are much more effective. The light can react with the nutrients and cause green algae.

  21. Brandon Baker on September 30, 2023 at 10:30 pm

Perfectly simple setup. Very effective. I would put the airlines in the top of the side of bucket. Not on lid so if you need to remove You can free of obstructions

  22. Robert Ramos on September 30, 2023 at 10:31 pm

hi can someone tell me why does this rig have to be aerated? i have 0 idea on how these things works

  23. Ken Bad on September 30, 2023 at 10:31 pm

I love this video but how do you know when to replace water that has evaporated. Do you just lift the lid and check ?

  24. Jypsy Dog on September 30, 2023 at 10:33 pm

Plant’s will do better with an air gap between the net and solution. 4 to 6 inches works well and let’s the plant dry at the base and stops rot.

  25. Nomadic Medhunter on September 30, 2023 at 10:37 pm

Hell yea! And nice shout out to the best seed company baker!

  26. joseph bvr on September 30, 2023 at 10:39 pm

One pump per bucket would be better

  27. Power of Knowledge on September 30, 2023 at 10:40 pm

What is the purpose of the air stones??? Why does it need air bubbles? Also, why wouldn’t you use a carbon filter for the water? I’m a complete newbie and I’m trying to keep my bamboo alive. I thought about a fish tank filter to keep the water fresh, but now I’m seeing you have air stones.

  28. Topsrite on September 30, 2023 at 10:44 pm

How do you change reservoir nute/water? Thanks

  29. Diesel Ramcharger on September 30, 2023 at 10:45 pm

only thing id like to add is make sure the 2 air lines are the same length, or one bucket will starve for air. you can drill the hole one size under 1/4" and the air line will fit nice and snug.

  30. Jim LePeu on September 30, 2023 at 10:45 pm

If you raise the air pump above the water level in the bucket it can’t siphon back to the pump.

sir could you recomend your average net cup distance from water level in your standard 5 gal setup?

  35. Nathan Hockley on September 30, 2023 at 10:51 pm

Should I clean the buckets before adding water and nutrients? Even if they’re brand new?

  36. Nick RPT on September 30, 2023 at 10:53 pm

Hello my friend. When the water level drops, do you fill up again at the starting point or lower? Thank you

  37. HappyHamHerbs on September 30, 2023 at 10:53 pm

Good stuff man, I started dwc just like this back in the day, people like to over complicate it.
