How to grow Euphorbia obesa from seed *the lazy way* | Includes 4 weeks of updates

In this video I share my experience of growing Euphorbia obesa from seed and the struggles I’ve had caring for adult plants. We then harvest seeds, sow the seeds, and watch the seedlings germinate and grow over a period of 4 weeks. I grow Euphorbia obesa from seed using exactly the same method as growing cactus from seed, except that I do not use shade cloth:

1. Wet the soil.
2. Fill the pot with enough soil such that tamping down the surface reaches the lower lip of the pot.
3. Place/sprinkle seeds on the soil surface and spray down with water.
4. Apply a thin layer of top dressing and spray down with water again. I’ve been using pumice as my top dressing lately but there are many other options.
5. My newest added step is spraying the surface of the top dressing with 3% hydrogen peroxide. Does it make a difference? I don’t know lol.
6. Place the pot in an enclosed space that allows light to pass through while creating a high humidity environment, such as a plastic bag.
7. Place the enclosed pot under grow lights. They prefer a lot of light.
8. Have fun watching germination and the young seedlings grow!
9. Around 2 months the seedlings are probably large enough to start acclimating to regular air.
10. Watering is still a guessing game for me. I have been watering the seedlings once a week. When they get big enough to squeeze, I will use the squeeze test to determine when to water. (Essentially, watering when there is give.)

The most important tip I’ve learned from experience is that the obesa seedlings need a lot of light, otherwise, they will grow a super long stem. I start obesa indoors under grow lights and I do not put shade cloth on them ever (unlike my cactus seedlings).

My soil mix: 50% UniGro cactus mix + 50% equal parts red lava rock/pumice/Akadama
Any cactus soil will probably do. I do not sterilize anything in my growing process. Too lazy. This mix was inspired by my Cactus Seed Soil Battle series.
