How to Identify Male and Female Cannabis Plants

How to Identify Male and Female Cannabis Plants

#hermie #malecannabis #pistils
how to tell a male apart from a female cannabis, weed or marijuana plant can often be confusing because females have calyxes or bracts which may look like balls or male pollen sacs. The key difference between the two types of balls is that females will have a stigma or pistil poking out of the balls which looks like a whitish yellow pipe cleaner that is intended to catch pollen in the air. This calyx of bract will eventually turn into a seed pod when pollinated. Some cannabis plants that come for breeders who do not stress test their strains or crosses may develop nanners or turn into hermaphrodites which possess both pistils, stigmas and male pollen sacs and flowers. This is due to poor ethics from releasing untested strains and a lot of new growers are not aware that there are hermie proof strains. It is important to research genetics before finding a strain or cross to grow and a video on how to choose a strain can be seen here: https://youtu.be/X09RU2wY7xc

Accurately identifying male and female cannabis plants is a fundamental skill for growers aiming to maximize their yields and produce high-quality buds. By understanding the key characteristics associated with each gender, you can effectively manage your cultivation practices, remove male plants promptly, and allow your female plants to flourish. With this knowledge, you’ll be well on your way to successful cannabis cultivation.

Understanding Cannabis Plant Anatomy:
Before delving into gender identification, it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with the basic anatomy of cannabis plants. Cannabis plants consist of leaves, stems, nodes, and flowers or buds. The reproductive organs are housed within the flowers, which develop differently in male and female plants.

Male Cannabis Plants:
Male cannabis plants are responsible for producing pollen, which is required for fertilizing female plants. Here are some key characteristics to help you identify male cannabis plants:
Pre-Flowering Stage: Male plants typically start to show their gender a week or two earlier than females during the pre-flowering stage.
Pollen Sacs: Look for small, grape-like clusters called pollen sacs. These sacs contain pollen and can be found in the nodes where branches meet the main stem.
No Pistils: Male plants do not have pistils, which are small hair-like structures found on female flowers. Instead, you’ll find thin, straight, and elongated structures within the pollen sacs.

Female Cannabis Plants:
Female cannabis plants are coveted by growers as they produce the resinous flowers rich in cannabinoids and terpenes. Identifying female plants is crucial to ensure a robust harvest. Here’s how to identify them:
Pistils: Female plants exhibit pistils, which are hair-like structures emerging from the nodes. These pistils are often white or light-colored and develop into the buds.
Calyx Structure: Look for swollen, tear-shaped calyxes at the nodes, which house the reproductive parts of the plant.
Lack of Pollen Sacs: Unlike male plants, female cannabis plants do not produce pollen sacs.

Removing Male Plants:
To prevent unwanted pollination and the development of seeds in female plants, it is recommended to remove the male plants from your growing area as soon as they are identified. This ensures that energy is directed towards bud production in female plants, resulting in higher-quality yields.

Exceptions and Hermaphroditism:
While the majority of cannabis plants exhibit clear male or female traits, it’s essential to be aware of exceptions. Hermaphroditism is a condition where plants develop both male and female reproductive organs. These plants, known as hermaphrodites, can self-pollinate and jeopardize the quality of your crop. Regular monitoring and removal of hermaphroditic plants are necessary to maintain a healthy, seedless harvest.

I have a hemophridite and around 80% of the plant is filled with flowers, so if I just cut the stems that have the balls on it can that save the plant?

With my current grow since I planned a long veg in order to use 2 plants to fill out a scrog in a 4×4. Since I heard the potential for feminized seeds exists I decided to take a clone from each of my plants and immediately flip them to a 12/12. After 14 days the clones had rooted and started showing female organs. I flipped the clones back to a 18/6 light schedule and revegged. I now have three mothers for each of the phenotypes my seeds presented. Give it a shot!

I just found out the blue light on my humidifier can cause herming. Still don’t understand this light leak thing as well. I have to leave the vents in my tent open. Heat is a big thing in AZ.

Killer video! That is how you explain shit. I had some Brothers Grimm Grimm glue beans 10 of them the first three tured out like C – and that was my fault. But the weird thing is the second three had all these weird mutations I started out with quads two of the three beans popped with four tops right out of the gate anyways I was worried about Hermes or males.
This is a good video a great video!! Subscribed subscribed subscribed clear concise direct info I feel much better because these next three are healthy ASFK!!! Beast mode getting ready to flip I’m going to keep paying attention for any hairy balls😂 thanks for this video dude you’re the

  19. @terpzfarmer8237 on May 13, 2024 at 10:40 am

Plain and simple, if you see any ball or brach of any type after a week in flower or 2 without a hair poking out its male. Females have white hairs PERIOD 🤜

  20. @user-jv5qz1pn7b on May 13, 2024 at 10:40 am

Grows fault. Herms is imilar to turning femal male. Outside of both sexaes reavealing at the same time as a herm is. So take herm seeds and you will grow maximum males or female genetics from either side. Dont fear herms learn to use herhim heirloom

Hi I was just wondering how long do you have to pull out the male before it becomes danger of turning the female

  23. @kiddynamite3931 on May 13, 2024 at 10:42 am

I don’t know of any ethical breeders in 2023. I’ve been breeding my own for a while, but gained access to some incredible cultivars in 2012. The only cultivars I use are from the 2000’s, or earlier, and haven’t added anything to my gene pool. This is an incredibly important video. You hit on it all!

    POT FARMER DANCE SONG $$
I got out my pipe stuffed it with pot
You better believe it held a whole lot.
I whipped out a lighter thumbed up a flame
Sucked down that smoke which comforts my brain.

    I tried alcohol smoked cigarettes
They did nothing but give me regrets.
My mom had arthritis could not walk around
I rolled her a joint she danced on the ground.

I thought I was losing my lovemaking knack
After I smoked some to me it came back.
Soon I decided prices were high
I searched for some ground I wouldn’t have to buy.

I bargained for seeds from smokers all around
Got in my truck and drove out of town.
I walked through the woods where wild birds nest
Found me the meadow I thought was the best.

I dug up the ground sowed all my seeds
Said a small prayer for strong, healthy weeds.
I watered at night with a five-gallon pail
Mosquitoes went hungry for I wore a veil.

Seven months went by; I thought I would die
Till the Halloween moon was high in the sky.
At night I went out, in a camouflage suit
Used my corn knife to chop down the loot.

I hung it up to dry where it couldn’t be found.
Came back and got it, when it had turned brown.
I trimmed off the buds, stuffed them in bags
Called all my friends and passed out free drags.

In less than a week my crop was gone
I flew to St. Thomas with a love hungry blonde!!

Sorry, but if I have just find some random seeds in my dispo bud, and decided to try and grow. Should I hope for hermies? Does that mean even if it has some seeds, it will still grow buds? Or is there still a chance of getting a male and no bud?

  26. @canada1st on May 13, 2024 at 10:45 am

I have gotten males with the Rocket Seeds.

  27. @cannafarmer on May 13, 2024 at 10:47 am

  32. @DrBerg-123 on May 13, 2024 at 10:53 am

Hi! if you have bad luck and you get hermies that make pollen. after throwing out the plants, for how long will the pollen "survive"? can they pollinate the next plants that you grow from seeds? is it important to clean the tent extra after you had pollen in it?

  33. @patrickbeguin6719 on May 13, 2024 at 10:54 am

But how about the 💯females that sometimes have one ore two seeds

  34. @happyg.444 on May 13, 2024 at 10:55 am

The hermi situation has gotten so bad with these companies, breeders like Arjan Roskam (GHS) and the dude from "Jungle Boys" along with lots of other breeders, are now saying "herms" are a good thing. lol
My opinion, the seeds are intentionally being ruined now so as to pollute the genetics for the common grower. Only certain breeders will have a clean product. I have 25 year old seed and not one "hermi" comes out of them, but 90% of the "elite" clones are hermi proned in todays world.
It’s a damn shame what they have done to the weed since the 80’s when it was killer.

Trying a bag seed right now, really unsure if I have a male or female. I’m thinking it might be male, but I don’t know enough to say for sure, and I don’t wanna chop the plant until I’m certain.
