Born in Douglasville, Georgia, Guffey made his film debut in the 1977 film Close Encounters of the Third Kind at the age of four. In 1979, he appeared in the movie The Sheriff and the Satellite Kid and its sequel Everything Happens to Me, with Bud Spencer. Guffey made his last onscreen appearance in the 1985 miniseries North and South.
Here’s a movie I never get tired of seeing. (It’s on now to be honest and someone asked if they knew what "Barry" was doing these days! I had to look it up!). The scene in India is on now so I’m off to watch this great movie once again!
👍
Cary’s grandmother and my father were first cousins. I have many fond memories of this fine woman.
The best movie of all time! I’ve watched this movie so many times that I know everyone’s line’s 🤣 I will always love Close Encounters of The Third Kind!
Thanks heaps for this interview with Carey. He seems like a really nice fellow. His role in Close Encounters as the little boy Barry contributed to the iconic status of the film. So cute and innocent. Agree with most, Spielberg was always a master at bringing out the best in child actors. Can’t wait to get the 4k uhd bluray on release.
What a nice and normal person. Wow.
Seems like a very well balanced individual.
Love this film, watched it again yesterday. Brilliant interview too.
The best alien movie ever it has drama it has intrigue. And the best sound track ever. It comes across between Jaws E.T and the Star wars movies. But then again same composer John Williams.
The kid from this movie is sooooo cuuuttteee! Also I find I can watch and watch movies from around this time. Close encounters, jaws, alien, the list is endless. Movies today however I struggle to even finish once.
This is for me, as well, a movie I can watch over and over again. Then one day I saw an interview with Spielberg saying he would never make a movie like this today, because it’s about a guy who doesn’t even question getting on that space ship and leaving his wife and kids behind. He said at the time of the movie he was single and had no family of his own. Today he does, he would never abandon his kids. Space ship or no space ship. When I watch the movie today I understand exactly what Spielberg was saying. As I watch Richard Dreyfuss’ character board the space ship I want so much to ask him "Dude, didn’t you ever bond with your kids? Not even once?"
Era você meu lindo?Eu tinha 13 anos quando vi este filme que mudou minha maneira de pensar até hoje!Foi o filme da minha vida
Great interview
I agree… the interior shots of the ship were not needed.
he loves blade runner respect
I agree with Cary about the interior of the ship scene… imagining what the interior experience would have been like is far better than being shown what it would be.
What great intv, nicely done. Carey seems like such a nice guy and he’s a Teacher! Thanks for putting this up.
Ru
Great video, although I would love to have heard him talk about the two movies he did with Bud Spencer where he played the Satallite Kid.
He said ‘ice cream’? The Dad said they look like ice cream cones. Marilyn M said her love live is like eating ice cream in a major magazine the same one that did a story on UFOs in the shape of ice cream cones with her on the cover.
I was obsessed with CE3K when I was a kid. My favorite scenes were with you in them! The opening of the door and the xylophone playing.
Cary’s scenes were all my favorite parts
Carey was a very cute wonderful kid and a very special find for Spielberg. He’s now a wonderfully grounded and unassuming human being which is great to see.
If you liked the shining read or listen to doctor sleep!
Chissá perché capitano tutte a me With the great late Bud Spenser My first time at the movie theater to watch it My gosh I was 9 then
Thank you, I would skip school every day when this was showing in Waikiki, to this day I have seen this movie 124 times.
Dude looks the same after all these years! One of my all time fave films, this and StarWars made my childhood!
He was so cute!
Wonder if you miss playing in the creek on Cheoah. Hard to believe you were three houses down. You’d be amazed on how many of the kids have actually bought back into the neighborhood. Glad to see you are doing well.
Hahah he is actually just the kid as an actor I thought I was the real kid who got abducted in real life
fantastico
This guy obviously has a high IQ, which is why he was able to follow instructions and play-act to turn out a compelling performance as a 4-year-old
Gary was a hero to children and adults like in this movie.
DON’T OPEN THAT DOOR! DAMMIT KID!
I agree with you, Cary, about The Empire Strikes Back. Thank you for creating the adorable Barry for Close Encounters Of The Third Kind. 👏🏻
He turned out so normal, unlike most child actors.
Close Encounters is one of the few movies that I can watch over and over again. I think that’s because of the very cool special effects, but also the sense of wonder the story portrays so well which is topped off by the positive and hopeful ending. Too many movies these days rely on CGI in lieu of a quality story and often have a nihilistic feel throughout complimented by gore and mindless action..
My sister would baby sit him in Georgia when he was a child.
Hi H7 25 😏
"TOYS!!"
I’m amazed at how Cary Guffey can even remember the part where Dreyfuss messed up his line. That’s how bright this guy was even as a kid. I don’t remember jack about being 3 years old.
I hope you read this Mr. Guffey. My name is Jeri Bailey. I was Jeri Grantham and my mama was Marie Griffin. She told me about this movie but couldn’ t tell me but part of the name of the movie. Third kind lol. I said mama you mean Close Encounters of the Third Kind. She said she had a cousin Mr. Jim Griffin whos grandson was in this movie. I could’n’t believe it . She and Mr. Jim Griffin were first cousins. Their daddys were brothers. Are you Mr. Griffin’s grandson? Would love to talk to you. thanks so much
He looks the same!!!!!!!!!!!
I like the idea that Spielberg made it like a playtime with the guy, it shows he knows how to work with kids and he’s not the sort of director that needs to go to extremes to get a good performance. I for one hate the notion of a director getting borderline abusive to get good performances from their actors.
Aww little barry he was so cute and perfect for the roll.xx💟💟
Currently watching it’s a nostalgic movie to me, and timeless never getting old…💫
My dad’s name is Roy F Neary. It’s weird to hear his name being played by actor.
Maybe he was speaking figuratively when he said taking part in The Shining would mean moving closer to Hollywood, but in reality, it would have meant moving to England…nothing wrong with that!
his house in the movie is about 3 miles from me ………….. all the hurricanes since then and its still standing. 30°32’56.0"N 87°51’05.8"W
Weird…he likes Empire amd Blade Runner like me and mentions the same reasons.
He didn’t age well and becoming a financial adviser is the worst kind of demon that can get you…
