Lollipop Pruning Method for Cannabis Production

Lollipop Pruning Method for Cannabis Production

Lollipop Pruning Method for Cannabis Production

Professor DeBacco

Enhancing Top Buds
Visually, lollipopped plants have bare stems with no foliage towards the bottom, similar to a lollipop stick.
Lollipopping is a pruning technique that enhances the buds at the top
This works well with growers also planning on the screen of green pruning method.
The result is to maximize bud size.
Can be done with autoflowers.

Maximizing Light Use
Lollipopping allows for greatest light intensity to be utilized by the plant and is accomplished by removing growth up to a certain point.
This pruning method will focus on the light energy being efficiently captured and stored in the apical buds.
Goal is to maximize bud size and quality

Lollipop Pruning Procedure
Lollipopping pruning method should be initiated and completed 2-3 days before the plants are flipped to the flowering photoperiod.
Start by removing unnecessary lower foliage that is heavily shaded.
This can be checked with a PAR meter to ensure growers can know what the light intensity actually is with-in the canopy.
Typically, entire branches are not removed unless they are short and not reaching the main light intensity.
In general growers should focus their trimming efforts 5 and more nodes below the top (apical meristem) of the plant.

Lollipopping and Defoliation
Yes, both involve removing leaves, but lollipopping focuses on the bottom part of a plant with the focus on removing growth that receives minimal light intensity.
Specifically, lollipopping favors the apical (top) buds while defoliation does not prioritize.

Common Method
Lollipopping is commonly part of a complete pruning/training program

Example: Lollipopping and screen of green go hand and hand.

Wow small world I was raised in that town in the intro. From the cliff view, to the meadows to the ferry.. unbelievable I had to triple check!

    Great info thanks for sharing.
At our facility when we lollipop we do cut the branches at the same time. We look for under developed branches that wont reach the scrog net or if a lower branch wont be able to get enough light which may be covered by the dominate branches.
The goal is to put the potential energy that would’ve gone into the under exposed branch and instead put that energy to better use in dominate branches where larger buds will form.
( I’m sure many of you already know of this.)

I’m fairly new to growing period growing marijuana , I’ve been told about the lollipoping by a few ( self explanatory) I figured till watching your video
    Thanks very informative
Would have never know where to start
    5 below approx
Knowing when obviously is very important , knowing not to in Flower
I can understand why , training can be done at same time as well having high humidity only makes sense regarding defoliation for air movement!.
I ran into dry white mildew last year ,was every where in doors as well as out
Can you tell me this mildew, did I cause it or where did it come from
    My whole yard had it

Don’t do this to a autoflower during its veg. Maybe after the stretch is complete u can take some of the larf off the bottom. Talking autos. Seems alot of new growers use them. If u do this with a auto early on your gona mess it up and stunt its growth. Some don’t get very big. U prune the bottoms early you might not have much growth left. Be careful with autos.

    Hello Professor,
With all do respect, could we change the term Screen of Green to Scrog or Scrog Netting?
I feel it sounds interchangeable and confused for Sea of Green which follows different rules.

Lollipoping is done by taken all those lower leafs and bud sites so the plant focuses its energy on top . By doing so buds grow bigger and denser, also I would defoliate some of the top so I can maximize light absorbed for better and bigger buds

maximises light exposure while minimising your NPK buffer reserves. I like some fluff and scrub for ice hash
if you are lighting your pots, you went too far..

  17. J Redcloud on November 23, 2022 at 12:13 am

Would you do this slowly overtime or just all at once before flower?

  18. John Hutchinson on November 23, 2022 at 12:13 am

Really great channel. I understand the lollipop method but I don’t understand how a person gets all of those limbs like that. I can’t get anyone to explain that to me. I joined a couple of grow group’s but they don’t tell you the truth because I’ve tried what they said and it didn’t do anything but made me loose some of my limbs that could have had flowers. Thanks for your help on this. You seem to know what your talking about and I’d really appreciate any advice on how to get a bushy plant like this in your picture on this video. Thanks 🙏

Lightly lollipopping throughout the life span is ideal all the way through veg and flower.

  21. Cliff P73 on November 23, 2022 at 12:15 am

May I ask if there a course and certificate that can be achieved?

  22. Graeme Hunter on November 23, 2022 at 12:16 am

I dont think its accurate to say lollipopping ≠ defoliation. Lollipopping IS defoliation, but in your own words it’s an "organized format" or system of defoliation. I understand your point, but in my opinion, think it’s slightly misleading.

  23. Fluffynutz on November 23, 2022 at 12:17 am

Lights are only so powerful, light doesn’t reach lower portion of plant, outdoors just crimp & let sun in.plus tge size,a cannabis plant outdoors can be huge, tie one down,a long your fence, full sun light, get pounds of sticky bud.

    Another great presentation!
I would love to see a video on choosing seeds focusing on buyer beware technics when buying seeds from a seed bank.ive been burnt 2 times now. They never germinated, it cost me $80. I have a serious disability and can’t afford to keep being ripped off.furthermore ,..these shops selling weed, are not selling what they say they are selling.is it any wonder we want to grow our own.sorry for the rant

  29. dieselphiend on November 23, 2022 at 12:21 am

Just try setting a piece of chicken wire on top of your plants. Pick it up, and reset it every day- don’t let them grow through. Achieves the same effect but with much less stress.

  30. Greenzone on November 23, 2022 at 12:23 am

How does removing bottom leaves increase light exposure at the top? It’s more about saving the nutrients for the top buds where the light is.

  31. fyre1borne on November 23, 2022 at 12:23 am

Lollipop provides air flow. Main-lining will produce more colas my feeding off one line. The breaks the single stalk dominance. Also, by not having branches coming off the main stalk, nutrients are easily transport throughout the plant FASTER.

  33. Ser walker of the Keynes on November 23, 2022 at 12:25 am

Iv gone very bare bones with my current "test" seed.

Its used some basic root formula during its infancy, followed by nothing but water and sunlight.

Now it’s in its own bigger pot with a cheap tomato feed for nutrients.

She’s growing well considering the limited sun, the 1st four leaves popped up very quickly, have added a marker stick to compare to the light lamps and higher nutrient enriched plants.

My hopes are decent yields at lower costs.. the dream.

It is difficult to say if the plant has unneeded leafs. As we can see, most of the plants can fully control its leafs and can "kill" some any time. Not so fast may be. Of couse the plant is ready to loose some parts, but maybe it dont need this. Great chanel. Thank you.

  37. Shokker Khan on November 23, 2022 at 12:34 am

Is it more difficult to have shorter plants with this method? I have a fairly short tent.

Does lollipopping focus the plants energy on the top buds to maximize A quality flowers rather than having that energy go to lower branches which produce B quality flower?
