Brandon del Pozo, PhD, MPA, MA, Professor for Alpert Medical School at Brown University, explains deflection as a prevention-oriented, upstream public health intervention in criminal justice settings. He describes public safety outcomes of linking people who commit crimes to effective treatments and explains the principles and elements of a deflection program as an alternative to arrest for people who have opioid use disorders.
