Saying 'Marijuana' or 'Dope' – Cannabis Slang Discussion

Today on Lex’s World I discuss how I feel about the words ‘marijuana’ and ‘dope’ and to what degree these are appropriate terms to use for Cannabis. One of them is an old throwback to Mexican culture that was used against Cannabis during the Reefer Madness Era, the other is a reference to Dopamine and is a uselessly broad drug term. Can either be reclaimed?

I call it "bud" usually, or "flower". Dope is a bad term for all the reasons stated in the video, and marijuana is just a clumsy word to say. Anyone upset by the term "marijuana" is a fucking tool. imo…

  4. The S/Word on May 15, 2022 at 6:42 pm

    I hate "marijuana"
I heard it was a derogatory anti Mexican term and therefore idiot.

  5. Grizzly Behr on May 15, 2022 at 6:44 pm

I agree with you 100% brother, lol my dad is a baby boomer and has called bud "dope" since then, I’ve made a little progress though, he’s calling it "pot" Which is better to me anyway.
Can’t wait for the next video, you’ve really helped me out in my growing experience and look forward to learning more ♤

Um , what kinda hole are we going down here!!!

  8. SonicRising on May 15, 2022 at 6:47 pm

I also exclusively call it cannabis. Personally I believe “Weed” in an insult to the plant as it deserves much more praise than that name suggests. I’m fine with using the term Marijuana but I still don’t get a good oompa loompa vibe about it as it still carries a negative stigma among the uninformed.

  10. Zach Dalehite on May 15, 2022 at 6:52 pm

Good video Lex …. i agree, i never use the term dope or weed …. ✌🏽

  12. John Lemon on May 15, 2022 at 6:54 pm

Hey LEX, i have been a sub for some time, and despite what people say here in the coments, and not wanting any beef pls… Ganja is not slang as some say, its a regional name for it, and marijuana on the other side is not a regional name for it, marijuana is a mix of herbs, mainly weed or ganja buds, mixed with a few others smokable herbs, in minimal quantities. if im wrong sorry for the ramble, but this is what many people have been saying. The US WAR on drugs took the name marijuana because it was easier to relate it to an actual psicodelic dangerous mix of herbs therefore law enforcing is easier.

  13. Ray mond on May 15, 2022 at 6:55 pm

I’m okay with calling things what they actually are. Unfortunately …op, you got there, the cop thing. #TOMARS

    TechRax has a weed channel?

  15. CH Franco on May 15, 2022 at 6:57 pm

Howard Marks stated that we should always use the word "marijuana", because that’s the name of the plant and we should "take it back" (similar to the queer argument). I like to use the word marijuana, it has such a negative impact on certain people that have been taught that is a "bad thing", that the more I use it, the less negative it becomes. Cannabis is the scientific name so it’s more precise, but no one uses the word "Canis" to refer to dogs instead.

  21. Keith Sparling on May 15, 2022 at 7:03 pm

  22. Frank Horrigan on May 15, 2022 at 7:04 pm

Only absolute pansies care if the word "marijuana" is "racist"
Although I mostly just use the terms "herb" or "bud"

  23. Liam Manion on May 15, 2022 at 7:05 pm

It’s fucking whatever you want to call it fuck me if you’re objectively referring to a physical object you’re not being racist. End of discussion. However, if you hear a word that is the definition for a plant, and you instantly relate it to racism, you’re the one with the prejudice and racist perceptions. It’s a hypocritical statement.

  24. A.F.C Fylde Fan on May 15, 2022 at 7:05 pm

    I usually call it Bud

  25. jackew99 on May 15, 2022 at 7:07 pm

I’m Hispanic, and I don’t fucking care if anyone calls it “marijuana”.

  29. Clorox Bleach Chan on May 15, 2022 at 7:09 pm

I never really heard anyone call it Dope, but people calling it Marijuana (especially if they are proponents of it) irritate me because IMO it’s a constant reminder of the propaganda and bullshit of the past. It should be removed from being the official word of choice in law & politics as ya boi Harry Anslinger was responsible for not only giving the word negative connotation and popularising it under prohibitionists, but also for literally making it law to use that word as an official refrence to it.

  30. Cesar Salgado on May 15, 2022 at 7:10 pm

nobody should get offended by the word Marijuaha or Marihuana, it’s how it’s called in spanish!

Off subject, but i stay in Michigan but I want to order quality female indoor and outdoor seeds. Please help

  35. Funk Junkie 703 on May 15, 2022 at 7:14 pm

Calling ganja "cannabis" just makes you sound like a geek who takes herb too seriously (i admit i am one of those geeks) . "GANJA" should be the proper term, it just rolls off the tongue and has such a chill irie "twang"/vibe to it and the word "ganja" has been used for millennia. This was even discussed in High Times once. I seriously don’t think calling it MJ isn’t wrong unless you’re either virtue signaling or you hate mexicans and don’t like using their words. Imo, i think calling it "pot"sounds the most insulting, but then again it’s not that big of a deal to me.

  38. John Rivers on May 15, 2022 at 7:18 pm

Exactly I Agree Alex. Not a fan of the word dope myself. Loving the knowledge on your second channel as well.

  39. Paul FUN on May 15, 2022 at 7:18 pm

My most common term is "pot" or "weed". I knew marijuana was weed in Mexico and dope was for dopamine but I don’t know where plain ole "pot" is derived from. Anyone know?

  40. Ghetto Produced It on May 15, 2022 at 7:20 pm

    Same points

  41. Gothead420 on May 15, 2022 at 7:23 pm

  42. Dalmain J on May 15, 2022 at 7:23 pm

What about the word weed? We don’t call apples weed. Or a tree a bush.

  43. 42LGK on May 15, 2022 at 7:23 pm

its funny how in my city everybody says motai (mota=spanish for weed)
my city is like 20.000 citizens and not even the town next to us know this term its a unique word for our small city lol

  44. Dat NOT Me on May 15, 2022 at 7:24 pm

I think this is politically correct and who cares. Theres an old hippie comic I’ve read. It said.
"Dope will get you through times of no MONEY better than money will get you through times of no dope." They were meaning cannabis. I know what you’re saying but, lets say what we wanna say for freedom sakes! Pot,ganja, etc
I do love your videos though, you kick ass

  45. Canadian Spawned on May 15, 2022 at 7:24 pm

I’ve always called it cannabis, always will bit let’s not become like these over sensitive bed wetters in this sjw/pc society

  46. StateRoad84 on May 15, 2022 at 7:25 pm

Yes, Cannabis, thank you Lex. I don’t like weed, dope or marijuana, they all have negative connotations. The Spanish origin was "mariguan" I believe, with different variants through the 1920’s. There is no history of the noun prior to 1873. Good stuff Lex, keep it up!

  47. Bio Living Organics on May 15, 2022 at 7:25 pm

Cannabis… period!!! Corrupt rascist white politicians used the "M" word to vilify and oppress!! Cannabis period!!

  48. Charles Fry on May 15, 2022 at 7:26 pm

Always hated that term “dope.” The implications are misleading when using cannibus. I tend to chastise ppl who use it in our conversation.

  49. Mahmoud Ajjan on May 15, 2022 at 7:29 pm

You’re right I feel like the word (dope) is dirty and it’s not for cannabis, I say weed that’s more like it for cannabis, bye.

  50. Jarius Isaac on May 15, 2022 at 7:30 pm

    It’s like the n word.
