Seed starting in January (Zone 7) Onions, shallots, leeks, lemongrass // GroundedHavenHomestead

Today I’m starting the FIRST seeds of 2023! I’ll be showing how I’m starting onions, shallots, leeks, thyme, and lemongrass. I’ll also be sowing some microgreens while we’re out there.

Really liked the simplicity of your method. Where did you put these in the house for them to germinate?
I have heard of putting them on top of the fridge. Or even taking Christmas lights and weaving them in a metal grill—on the bottom of it. Then setting the container on the top of the grill. Of course, it would have to be hung some sort of way.
Once seedlings are coming up, what do you use for the grow lights?
Thanks for your time and help showing us an easy and inexpensive way to produce great seedlings. Jesus bless.

I love seeing your chicken exploring the yard fallowing you around while you planning your garden. 🙂 I noticed you have a greenhouse do you plant any seeds there? I never started seeds indoors because I lived in FL. The whole process is dreadful LOL so I am wondering if I can direct sow and in cold frame or loop covers? That was interesting with the onions seeds! So many ..I didn’t know they can be crowded. I just finished my salad and was wondering if I can use it for something and there it is perfect idea in your video 😄I enjoyed it. thank you, Michele

I appreciate this so much! It was a good reminder to me that we don’t need all the extra stuff – a few recycled containers and store bought potting mix will do just fine! And I love the crowded idea — please do an update on them as they grow. I’m also interested in the alfalfa as a microgreen and hope you’ll show us that harvest in a week. 😊

This time of year is so fun. Are you planning to do a cut flower garden this year?
