After you add the seeds do you put them in a window, direct sun, or under lights. I cant get them to grow at all.

Very nice video Gary, I have sowed kolhrabhi seeds in small tray,100% germination and only 2 leaves as of now, can I plant them outside directly instead of transplanting 100 plants? I am in zone 7a, central NJ,

  3. @bc24roxy4 on January 27, 2024 at 5:57 am

i thought broccoli was a fall crop? I’m confused. Yours is the 4th video I have seen starting seeds in Feb and planting soon. I watched a dozen videos saying it was fall crop. I am in no Calif and am just starting broccoli and cauliflower seeds but outdoors because the weather is hot here. can’t grow indoors. plan was to having them outside during the day and bring in at night?

  4. @maienduo on January 27, 2024 at 5:58 am

I plant all my seeds in the ground and thin it out the rows to plant in other rows. That’s more easier methods for me.

Awesome video. I just planted collard greens, broccoli, brussel sprouts & cabbage, do I bottom water once a week?

I think mine are stunted, they were stunted for 2 months, and then started growing bigger as soon as I put them under a growlight

Headed out for some mindful broccoli transplanting and moving them to my greenhouse. I just wanted to say thank you for your helpful videos! I’ve been watching 2 years now, and between you and Jess at Roots and Refuge I finally feel I’m able to take on the gardens I’ve always wanted. 😊 Thank you again! Stay well and take care!

I definitely know why my broccoli wasn’t doing well this spring, I didn’t grow them big enough! Thanks for the video

  14. @dag4836 on January 27, 2024 at 6:06 am

Can they be direct sown into their permanent 3-gallon container or do you have to start them this way?

  15. @jeromepatoux9719 on January 27, 2024 at 6:08 am

Hello, interesting video. Thanks. Once you have all your large cups in a tray, how do you remove excess water in the tray, and do you also water from the top?

  16. @tictoc7681 on January 27, 2024 at 6:13 am

When I transfer the sprout in a cup where should I put if I do not have a greenhouse?

  17. @timothyacademy1372 on January 27, 2024 at 6:14 am

Hi Gary, Do you have to "harden off" these if you started them indoors or can they just go outside after 4-5 weeks of growth? Thanks for your help!

General question about thinning plants… Note or not to waste a potentially healthy plant could you not take the seedling that you’re pulling and put it in its own separate tray or pot and see if it recovers?

  23. @SpinDizzy-fr8bc on January 27, 2024 at 6:21 am

Been watching your videos for almost 10 years. I have never commented but wanted to tell you your videos get me through winter and my gardens have always done well with your advice. Thanks!

  24. @talknewz7617 on January 27, 2024 at 6:24 am

Where did you get the black seedling cartons?

  25. @shadyfieldhomestead1974 on January 27, 2024 at 6:25 am

I have a quick question. I am going to transition my raised beds from wood to cinder blocks. However, I currently have broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower and cabbage in several raised beds. Many are very close to the edges near the wood. In order to replace them, I would need to push the soil in several inches. If I just put the cinder blocks up against the soil where the wood is, I would lose aisle space. My question is, can I push the soil where these plants are in to be able to fit the cinder blocks? Or will that disturb the roots too much and potentially kill my plants?

Have just put my plants in the garden there stems are not so strong will they be ok?

  29. @VallanaTrue on January 27, 2024 at 6:28 am

My 4 week old kale are yellowing around the edges. Is that an indication of too much light or two much fertilizer? I’ve only fertilized a 1/20 strength kelp fertizer twice but 9 days apart

I’ve had a lot of trouble with brassicas in my first year of seed starting. It’s been frustrating. Not sure what I’m doing wrong, but I appreciate videos like this to see what others do differently.

  35. @victoriasann1772 on January 27, 2024 at 6:33 am

Took all my seeds for fall gardening soaked them in warm water after 2 days placed a 6 pack, put out side for free light, about 8 individual pks, cool nights 4 pks used cardboard box to protect, so 2 boxes, take covers off during daylight
Living in zone 7 extremely dry, brown grass dry. Pks get watered when needed. Have bok choy, broccoli, carrots,
romaine, white radish,,kale, beets. Been 11 days growth. Warm nights no boxes.
    Waiting more growth to plant.

This year grew celery leaf, no underground sprinkler system, heat wiped them out. I cut an inch above ground level, now have fall celery. About a foot tall.

Gary, the Waltham 29 broccoli, does that only grow 1 main head? Or are there side shoots that produce smaller heads later on? So far, I only have the main head and no suckers growing mini heads. Thanks!

  38. @valleyfour1 on January 27, 2024 at 6:40 am

Hi Gary, I have broccoli, kale, lettuce in seed cells. They seem long and leggy, they don’t look like yours. I put a light under a few days after they sprouted. Can I still plant them into bigger containers in a few weeks? Oh, I saw you buried them deeper. Would that be the solution?

  39. @WonbyGrace2 on January 27, 2024 at 6:41 am

Would love your feeding recipe and is epsom salt in your feeding liquid?

  40. @johnclamshellsp1969 on January 27, 2024 at 6:42 am

Great video Gary on Kohlrabis. Hey, on the plant trays, I found that using the Menards, Costco or Home Depot 27g totes work great. Follow this, read.
    1. Purchase 27g tote with yellow lid (they are the strongest) $7.00
    2. Take Sharpi marker on bottom tote for 3.5’in line all the way around. I used the styrofoam cup and notched it to hold a marker. Use cup and marker all the way around as your straight guide.
    3. Take an old junk butter knife or similar and use a torch to heat. I found putting a knife on vice grips works amazing. Heat till almost red hot and cut along the marker line. **Do this outside for any fumes**.
    4. let cool and trim flashing off if desired.
    5. Now take lid put on top of your cut container for a platform and extra stability.
    6. hold exactly 40 styrofoam cups.

  44. @Just-Nikki on January 27, 2024 at 6:49 am

I know this is an old video but do I start my cool crops indoors now, I’m in zone 6a and I read so many conflicting articles on that.

  45. @phyllisshankle3540 on January 27, 2024 at 6:50 am

Here in 2021!!!! Just the information that I needed!!

  46. @shadyfieldhomestead1974 on January 27, 2024 at 6:52 am

When you transplant them, are you transplanting them to bigger pots/cells or are they going in the ground? I’m getting ready to start some of my fall crops indoors in a month or two and wanted to know how long I can keep them indoors before they need to go into the ground? I’m doing that to get more out of my crops that are currently in there and just trying to push them out as long as I can, thanks.

Mr. Gary, could you kindly reply with the link to purchase my supplies for the class you are starting in January. I can’t find the video that has that particular link. Thanks in advance.

  48. @brandykrug3269 on January 27, 2024 at 6:52 am

Gm. I enjoyed your video. I have a question wayyy off topic. First thing I noticed you have Epsom salt.
    Dude!!!!
I am like Denzel in distress over here because of Epsom salt!!!!
This is my second year in gardening, so I’m still learning. which is awesome.
I had seen where Epsom salt was used in the garden and it was supposed to help it thrive. No it did not! 😳 It caused everything blossom end rot. Happened fast is how I knew it was the Epsom salt.
I started googling how to fix it so I didn’t ruin my entire garden this year.
I have seen potassium is the biggest way for me to fix this so far.
I’m trying my best to stay organic.
So what I have found is to take eggshells and crush it really, really good to a powder like add very little vinegar, let it bubble up and dilute it with a lot of water, like a gallon. I’ve been doing that once a week. I’ve done it twice a week a couple times, it’s working. It’s putting the proper nutrients back into my ground, into my plants I mean. Lol
My question is, How are you using Epsom salt? I believe Epsom salt works really good for certain plants, but will destroy others. I think it’s good for like roses. I’m learning not to use it on my tomatoes and squash and cucumbers. Does anyone know a proper way of using Epsom salt, just like I had to figure it out with the egg shells
What I’m learning, soil already produces nitrogen so adding in the Epsom salt, you’re blocking every other nutrient that plant needs.
It looks like my blossom end rot has stopped. 🤷 It’s just nothing is really growing and my tomatoes are not turning red, they’re still green. 😵
They are supposed to be beef stick tomatoes.
    Halp!

  49. @Just-Nikki on January 27, 2024 at 6:53 am

My starts are very leggy. Is that from insufficient lighting? I have room now in the garden so should I transplant now in zone 6a?
