Seed to Flower in 4 Months | How to Scarify and Grow Canna Indica from Seeds into Canna Lily Plants

Canna Lilies have astounding growth rates, they can grow from a seed to six feet tall in one growing season. In this video, I show you how to grow Canna Indica seeds into Canna Lily plants. Canna Lilies add beautiful flowers and foliage to a tropical garden.

I found the Canna Indica seeds for sale on eBay. They may belisted as Indian Shot seeds. They are cheap at about 20 for $5. I only buy my seeds from US sellers, as I have received fake canna seeds from overseas sellers. These seeds will usually have green foliage and red or yellow flowers. For other Canna Lilies with the beautiful variegated foliage, you will have to buy them as bulbs or rhizomes because they are hybrids.

First, the canna seed needs to be scarified or nicked to let the water into the seed. I use a Wen Rotary Tool from Amazon https://amzn.to/3UMRio7 to scarify the seed. Then I soak the seed in hot water for one week until a root emerges from the seed.

Then the seeds are planted on top of potting soil in a container with a lid kept under a grow light. After a few days a plant will emerge and when the plant gets too tall for the container, I transfer the plant to cups to grow.

When the weather warms up to the 60’s, I plant them in my tropical garden and the Canna Lily grows astoundingly fast, and flowers in 4 months. Grow Canna Lilies in your garden to give it that tropical look.

wow! thanks for such a informative video. Will scarify my 5 seeds today. Are these hardy outside for Zone 7a??? In NE Georgia here and we get cold nights in early Spring. Not sure how outside hardy they are, but are they mostly indoor plants?

How hot must that water be? I live in a tropical region so if I get normal water will it be fine? Or should I heat it somehow? Thanks for the videos though

How long do you think a rhizome keeps giving good growth before it’s time to do this ? I feel like the average Cana is about three to five years ? I have a really rare ten foot variety ( well… rare to me. I haven’t seen it anywhere else but the place I bought the starter plant years ago. And I haven’t seen it since ) but this thing is a prehistoric monster. I guess my neighbor has it now. I’m sure he’s thrilled. Lol. It’s nicer than the poison oak and blackberries he’s growing. So… whatever

Hello, more questions on my canna lilies I grew successfully from seed (from your video) . I want to take ONE of the plants out to my daughter across the country. Do I simply dig out the plant and put in another pot (hoping it doesn’t kill it) and keep moist for the 9 days it will take us to arrive there? do I cut it back (it’s still green and flowering) before I dig it out? Also, my plants have these big seed pods (or whatever they are) forming on the plants after the flowers have finished blooming. What do I do with these? Also, how do I maintain these plants in the Winter time? Mulch alot ??? do I cut the spent leaves down to the ground or do I dig out the rhizomes and store elsewhere??? thank you

Good job!!! I’ve been looking for a video like that for ages!!!
One question, should I leave the seeds in the water for 7 days or take them out when the water cools down?

    Okay

Does only 1 seed need to be grown or can you add multiple seeds to a pot

It’s a good video, as all your videos!
I just wondered where do you scarify the seeds, anywhere on the seed, or at a particular point?

after they sprouted do you still need the cover? also how long until each 1 actually grows a rhizome? thanks

So, 4 mths later and my canna lilies are about 8-12 “ tall.. no flowers yet but still growing.. they have holes in the leaves .. most of them.. what kind of bug would do this and how to control it.. also, what type of fertilizer do you give them and how often?

are these plants from seeds a 1 season plant and done or do these eventually create rhizomes. If they do i would think it would take alot of seasons to create rhizomes
