Removing fan leaves is typically an indoor technique meant to encourage lower growth that typically would receive little to no direct light. If you wait too long to defoliate, you could be doing more harm than good. Fan leaves are the energy centers of the plant, working to absorb sunlight and convert the stored energy into sugar for use by other parts of the plant.

If you carefully and meticulously defoliate specific fan leaves in veg or very early in flower, you can positively impact growth, but this technique is best suited to indoor environments where the lighting is static. In dynamically lit environments, this technique may not be as useful for stimulating lower growth. A great alternative to defoliation is simply to bend and tuck the fan leaves instead: This way you can increase light penetration while minimizing damage and stress to your plants.

Thank you for your help 🌺🥰 I wasn’t sure if I should remove leaves in flower stage. I watched so many vids on this. I really enjoyed you explaining it for me to understand what to do and not to do 👍❤️

Fan leaves don’t use energy, they produce it, they’re the refrigerator for your buds… Why do you think all the leaves turn yellow towards Harvest time, because the plant’s using and sucking the leaves dry, but if you don’t have any leaves for the plant to use, drrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

    Here’s my opinion:
Fan leaves are good to keep when your a novice grower and you are feeding the plant, the less fan leaves you have the more careful you need to be with the feedings.
I have a friend that strips all the fans off couple weeks into flower and he has amazing results

My first ganj patch was in 1970..I’ve experimented dozens of times and if anything the plants with fan leaves removed no matter when did better than the ungroomed ones..light and air, pal. I’m not growing orchids here, it’s weed…

  10. ElevatedGrub Gardens on September 14, 2022 at 2:55 pm

After week 4 of flower I dont do anymore stripping

  11. JCuL2vaDeR420 on September 14, 2022 at 2:56 pm

Your suppose to prune your plant on all stages of its life. You keep alot of fan leaves take away from big buds and too many leaves create pest. So yes prune your plants. Check my channel out and I do it all the time. Your buds should actually be bigger than that. Been growing 10 years and never had a problem and you only wanna take off fan leaves that are too big or just blocking bud sites. Ppl prune your plants or you’ll have small buds and create pest

  12. Lamp Seven on September 14, 2022 at 3:01 pm

Removing fan leaves doesnt stress your plant imo. Mold and powdery mildew do though

  13. Newwavepressure on September 14, 2022 at 3:03 pm

What about yellow ones lik dieing i thing its a nitrogen prob ????

  14. Chris Husack on September 14, 2022 at 3:05 pm

You should always remove fan leaves on week 3 of flower. Fan leave removal does not hurt the plant. So many advantages!

  15. Bassion Millward on September 14, 2022 at 3:07 pm

Hey there I wanna remove 3 branches from my photoperiod plant it’s in late flower and the 3 branches that I wanna remove aren’t producing flower but the other branches are getting fatter . The reason is that I want the plant to used it’s energy on the branches that have , ( the reason the branches I wanna cut are taking so long is because it’s a massive plant ))

  16. Danny Carides on September 14, 2022 at 3:07 pm

If the leafs stems are purple, does that mean the leafs are taking the energy the bud its self is supposed to be taking in?

  17. Kurtis Schmidt on September 14, 2022 at 3:09 pm

I have a outdoor plant growing in Washington that’s still in vegetation but I’m wondering where and what fan leaves to cut or if I should at all

  18. Boneheads outdoors on September 14, 2022 at 3:11 pm

Leave all them leaves on if u want bud rott.

  19. Vince A on September 14, 2022 at 3:11 pm

    And for air flow

  20. Who Else on September 14, 2022 at 3:13 pm

What causes indoor fan leaves ends to start turning up on the end tip and getting dark spots of gray during flowering?

  21. Danny Blue on September 14, 2022 at 3:14 pm

Bro I actually removed the fan leaves with an outdoor plant and the buds got HUGE. I’m from the Caribbean so it 12 12 all year round

  22. hank68 on September 14, 2022 at 3:17 pm

I remove 75% of faan leafs after 3rd week of flowering
And my crop makes other look sick
Not to mention topping and lollipopping
Which i see you havent yet
Looks ok though but you could do more

  23. ElevatedGrub Gardens on September 14, 2022 at 3:19 pm

I do in week 4,I defoliate for air flow, and better sunlight to places being blocked by the larger fan leaves,I also chop of lower branches that produce pop corn nugs, and I like to monster crop for a bigger yield, also alot of fan leaves can keep bugs and powdery mildew, that’s why I do it,and it gives me a bigger yield every time

  24. Melv Good on September 14, 2022 at 3:19 pm

Outdoor minimal indoor a little more

  25. Michael Warner on September 14, 2022 at 3:20 pm

in a rainy climate the plant needs better air flow to dry it out or the buds will get moldy , so removing the fan leaves can be beneficial in this scenario ? I have one plant outside that is so thick and wide, over 8′ wide to be exact, it’s thick I mean you cannot even see into the center of the plant on any side , so i’m worried about mold and of course caterpillars, spotting the egg might be nearly impossible with so much thickness , Did I say thick yet, it’s monster thick lol great video lots of good info, Peace !

  28. Vince A on September 14, 2022 at 3:24 pm

Only reason to remove a fan leaf, is in early veg, and because it’s not ever going to get light. So many people are butchering plants on YT, and telling you to do the same. Plants can only take in the light they NEED, is through fan leaves.

Do you remove the yellow leaves when in flowering, or do you let them fall off? 🙏😯💨

Hello have you ever worked with any companies or sponsors that are related to growing while doing videos on Youtube? I ask because I had a company reach out about working together on one of our other channels and wanted to talk to a couple people that have already worked with companies or have any experience or pointers?!!! Do the plants take offense if I prune them a bit in the flowering tent?
I’ve packed my tent a little too much, and now they’re taking each other’s light. It’s like a SOG with plants that are a little too big. just a little.
The tentfloor is completely filled with pots, that just gets out of control.
