This video will cover everything you ever wanted to know about special education. It covers the important questions such as why education was started in the first place, the purpose of special services for students, how a student becomes eligible and qualifies, the least restrictive environment (the lre, including general education classes, special ed, inclusion, mainstreaming, entire schools for these students, home-bound or residential settings, etc. The video also cover major legislation which includes fape, free and appropriate public education for all students started by public law 94-192, no child left behind act, idea which stands for the individuals with disabilities education act, then essa, every student succeeds act. The video continues with a breakdown of classroom instruction into six different categories which include modifications, accommodations, teaching strategies, environment, behavior intervention, and assistive technology. Then the video moves along to curriculum for students with disabilities, such as functional curriculum, generalization, emergent curriculum, and critical thinking strategies. Next the inclusion education movement is discussed, and finally the video finishes with ways to connect with families of special education students. This video is part of a playlist by Frank Avella and Teachings in Education, and it included functional behavioral assessments, the history of special education, categories of students with disabilities, abc charts, behavior intervention plans, 504 plans, and more.

Do you have a lesson plan of special education sir?

  2. Jonathan Gallup on May 16, 2022 at 4:25 pm

Getting modifications for assignments is pretty nice tbh. Having a slight mental disability can be quite a luxury at times

Tbh In my opinion I think special education teachers are annoying they make you feel like your not capable of doing much and I feel special education is an insult to the people who have different ways of understanding something. Special education teachers makes you look dumb and I cannot tolerate the people who look at you badly because it’s out of your control . I don’t feel human knowing that I can’t do a problem by myself and be left alone from these teachers.

Thank you for the advice. I was sent to a special education class right after kindergarten simply because of my severe visual disability. The teachers argued over my capabilities right in front of me, forbidding me to get involved in sports programs. If I were given the opportunity to put in my honest effort then pull out, then I would have had no problems. However, they forcibly sidelined me, then put on my report card that I was anti social because I never took part in any sports. This took place in the mid 60s. I’m so glad that today’s children have the backup that I was deprived of.

I really enjoy your videos. Thank you! I do have an issue with your definition of Least Restrictive Environment. The IEP team is bound by IDEA to ensure that placement decisions for any given student are considered to be the Least Restrictive Environment. So, LRE is most definitely relative. If a child truly needs a placement such as a school totally devoted to students with special needs, or even a residential setting, that setting is then considered to be the LRE for that student. I agree, schools that are wholly designed for students with special needs are restrictive ones, but if the IEP team members are performing their roles in the manner to which they should be, students that are placed in these settings through the IEP process are placed appropriately — and placed in the LRE that best serves their needs. Additionally, what are your thoughts on using people-first language? As a lifelong special educator, I do try to call attention to the individual first and then the disability, but I also know that many individuals with disabilities do not prefer the usage of person-centered language.

  17. Christopher Clem on May 16, 2022 at 4:36 pm

Absolutely all special education classes and schools must be outlawed, burned down in the middle of the night and never be reestablished as they are a hate crime and child abuse as there are no disabled children or people!!!!

What is your email? I have a question about this site.

  27. Sliver Dragon on May 16, 2022 at 4:47 pm

As a disabled person if you try to work hard just like everybody else people look down on u for trying and that why disabled shaming people destroys there confidence and disabled people don’t get treated like a human being they get treated like sub humans and if a disabled person ever going to make it in this world they would have to advocate for themselves and not rely on people and fight hard for what they want and not give a rat ass what people tell them

  28. Sliver Dragon on May 16, 2022 at 4:49 pm

The thing with special education the system still has many flaws the student still has to have Determination and has to work twice as hard than a person who not disabled and I’m living proof of that I had to fight all my life in order to move up in life. the sad reality most people don’t give a damn about disabled people growth and it’s a never ending battle u either advocate and use leverage to get far or u remain weak and accept things the way they are with out trying this world doesn’t respect the weak

I love your artistic representation of special education. Drives down the message more

  37. Spartan Goku on May 16, 2022 at 5:00 pm

What if we passed on a cure for cancer and HIV because we were funding a program to teach 30 year olds how to count to ten instead of more aggressive education for the gifted?
This is a genuine concern I have.

please present videos specifically outlining how to teach remedial math and English language arts!!

  40. Dr Pluto on May 16, 2022 at 5:03 pm

As someone who used to be in special education, it was horrible! I started taking it back in kindergarten because the teacher was concerned over the fact that I used to pace back and forth a lot and fidget as well. They put me as well as other students in a separate classroom to do separate schoolwork. Ever since I took it it made me feel different and made me feel like I was too stupid to do anything. Back in middle school my special Ed teacher at the time tried to take me out of German class because she thought I couldn’t handle learning a different language and also put me in special Ed math and English classes (they didn’t teach us grade level math). Luckily I was able to take German but the special Ed teachers still tried to talk me into not taking it again in later years. On the plus side though I was able to get into a regular English class in 8th grade and eventually got out of special Ed as a whole at the end of my sophomore year but I am not in a grade level math class. Right now I am a senior and although I’m out of special ed I still hate it to this day and worried if my future will be effected because of it.

I absolutely love your videos! I have been using them to prepare for my teacher certification exam and they have been extremely helpful. I was wanting to know if you would be creating video(s) outlining and explaining how teachers are to promote student’s performance in both math and English language arts?
