Step by Step instructions:
1. Make sure you use an egg carton that is made of a biodegradable material and perforate the bottom of the egg carton with small holes to allow for drainage. Place egg carton on cookie sheet.

2. Soak seeds for 6-10 hours prior to planting in egg carton.

3. Fill egg carton to the mid-way point with soil and soak with water.

4. Place the seeds on top of the soil and cover to the top of the egg carton with soil. Soak again and cover with egg carton top.

5. Place egg carton in area of house that is at or above room temperature.

6. In about 2 – 3 weeks the seedlings should be ready to transplant.

7. Prepare garden bed and before breaking apart the egg carton. The egg carton cells should be able to tear right off, but I perforate the joint between the cells with a knife.

8. Gently break apart the egg carton walls from the root ball of the seedling and plant in the garden, mulch around plant, and water thoroughly for the next few days.

9. Since the Egg Carton is biodegradable, recycle it and use it as a mulch for your garden 🙂

What could I use for a lid if I threw them out?

This is very helpful, I’m wondering if i can start sunflowers in the egg carton?

  7. @cra2cra226 on January 24, 2024 at 5:55 am

I am a total garden newb so I am amazed at how resilient and determined plants are. I didn’t know I needed to poke holes in the bottom, or to use/wet cardboard containers, or to keep them in the dark, or to soak the seeds first, or any of that stuff. I didn’t even spread out my tiny seeds like in your video – just poked a hole about 1 finger-digit deep and dumped in 2-4 seeds per hole.

I took the seeds, stuck them in little drinking cups I put dirt in, moistened the soil, and then left it out in the yard where the sprinklers will hit it. They all sprouted up in a few weeks and now I’ve got 3 levels of leaves on some citrus trees and sunflower sprouts. Time to put ’em in bigger pots, I guess, then into the ground.

What kind of soil works well for starting the seeds

  11. @terri4340 on January 24, 2024 at 5:58 am

Could you do one in the egg carton for lettuce please???

  12. @30deblanc on January 24, 2024 at 5:59 am

Next time just put the whole plant and egg carton part in the ground. Don’t peel the egg carton off the roots. The egg carton is biodegradable, plus is hold water for the plant.

    Pull your weeds up

  14. @cayleyziegler4942 on January 24, 2024 at 6:01 am

how often do you water the seeds while they are still in the egg carton?

  15. @cass1478 on January 24, 2024 at 6:02 am

I’m using an H-E-B egg carton too! Best grocery store ever!

    1:55 lol

  17. @babboonbutts on January 24, 2024 at 6:06 am

at the part when you water it and keep the lid close do you keep it inside the house or leave it outside?

  18. @jodiloree3691 on January 24, 2024 at 6:11 am

Plant it with the carton…it will disintegrate

  19. @emilymenchaca5849 on January 24, 2024 at 6:12 am

    😍😍😍

  20. @ashleybermudez1056 on January 24, 2024 at 6:13 am

I just planted my seeds just like this, do I let them stay outside to eventually germinate and grow or let them stay inside until they are big?

  21. @disguyjordan on January 24, 2024 at 6:13 am

Is it possible the roots will just grow through the carton?

  22. @XOXrisandyXOX on January 24, 2024 at 6:14 am

You should make a hole in the bottom first, so the roots can grow well
    Just suggestion

  23. @soulfly4076 on January 24, 2024 at 6:15 am

burry them with the carton , it breaks down and does have some nutrition for the baby roots… i do so for 30 years and always have strong roots moreover the eggshells themselves crushed into the soil adds needed calcium and some white and yolk left over for even more plant food !!!

  24. @janjosephnioda4222 on January 24, 2024 at 6:17 am

can someone give me robux🤣 my name is janix12nioda121512

  25. @chikinnugg5074 on January 24, 2024 at 6:18 am

I’m using a plastic eggs carton I hope it works 😅

  26. @cfoster6804 on January 24, 2024 at 6:18 am

So it looks like I need to leave them in the carton for a while because yours look pretty big. Mine are popping up after 2 days but of course they are very small. How many days did you keep the lid on? How many days did you keep them in the carton in the house?

  27. @paytonjewel6106 on January 24, 2024 at 6:21 am

I didn’t germinate my seeds with water first, will they still sprout?

  28. @thegoodlife2021 on January 24, 2024 at 6:22 am

Can you just leave the carton on roots since it is degradable ? Seems like it would be better to have roots intact and grow through.

  29. @ariaboyd8952 on January 24, 2024 at 6:22 am

I honestly would plant the seeds a little deeper. When they start sprouting, the deeper the roots, the less likely they are to dry out in an egg carton. 🧡

  30. @18corazoncito on January 24, 2024 at 6:23 am

Do the seeds need light before putting in the ground?

  31. @maryannknudsen4817 on January 24, 2024 at 6:24 am

    So helpful thanks

  32. @spirituallymommy2646 on January 24, 2024 at 6:28 am

I’m new to gardening. How would you plant these indoors after using the egg carton method?

  33. @SimplyLena123 on January 24, 2024 at 6:29 am

Could I use a clear plastic egg carton ??

  34. @kathyxiongchannel138 on January 24, 2024 at 6:30 am

    Hi

  35. @dropdeadgawjus6544 on January 24, 2024 at 6:33 am

Do I need to peel the carton off?

  36. @carlyrich8241 on January 24, 2024 at 6:33 am

Thanks, I’m interested in trying this. We eat a TON of eggs, and I have a special coffee grinder for the shells, but aside from making fire starters with wax and some of these i’m like…..what the hell do i do with the rest of them lol? seems like a convenient package that i can compost after.

  37. @waltpahucki933 on January 24, 2024 at 6:34 am

    Thanks for this informative video!
What are the pros and cons of planting it with the whole egg carton section?

  38. @rayngrace on January 24, 2024 at 6:35 am

Can you use the plastic container vs cardboard container? Thanks

  39. @straightfromtheheart7549 on January 24, 2024 at 6:36 am

I think the "you can put the pot right in the soil" might be a myth from people that have never grown anything.
You do have nice looking roots. I tried using the paper egg carton too… they germed OK, but never put out roots through the pots. I wanted to put them straight into the ground like peat pots… but it didn’t work out for me. Looks like you had to remove the cardboard like I did. Do you think scoring some lines down the side would help? That seems like almost more work/trouble then it’s worth though…
(besides- I’ve found that roots and seedlings are a lot tougher then most people think. I’ve even used scissors to cut roots that were too long and the plants were healthy and vigorous. I’ve done this a number of times, and with different types of plants. All of mine are organic- don’t know if that matters or not.
( I also did a vid on how rough you can be with cactus seedlings- and they are surprisingly tough! The ones from the video are thriving outside right now. I even found some tiny cactus seedlings out in the yard after the small container they were sprouted in dried out and blew over-scattering all the seedlings.)

  42. @ma.sorielsorel3469 on January 24, 2024 at 6:38 am

Lovely video. Was hesitating to germinate my sunflower seeds in egg cartons. Watching this makes me wanna start right away. Thanks

  43. @arayalemonis1577 on January 24, 2024 at 6:43 am

The seeds will grow without light? I thought seeds needed a lot of light to sprout

  44. @NissanDudeAZ on January 24, 2024 at 6:43 am

I just started my own! The seeds already started sprouting. Thanks!

  45. @aleksandramesquita1949 on January 24, 2024 at 6:45 am

Do you have to take them out of these cartons?

    Good information
