Thailand becomes the first Asian country to partially legalize Marijuana | DW News

Thailand plans to give away 1 million marijuana seedlings to encourage growers — getting high, however, could still be punished. A legislation allowing the cultivation of cannabis in Thailand came into effect on Thursday. The law, also allowing the use of cannabis in food and drinks, is a first of its kind in Asia. Although Thailand is not following the Uruguayan or Canadian models of legalizing recreational marijuana, it is seeking to boost hemp agriculture and medical tourism.

Grow but don’t smoke
Thailand is strongly promoting growing cannabis and using it for medicinal purposes, but it is still encouraging people not to smoke pot. The government is not allowing the possession or sale of cannabis extracts containing more than 0.2% of its psychoactive ingredient tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC. That’s around 20 to 40 times less than modern recreational cannabis designed to influence people’s state of mind would likely contain. In a warning against recreational use, the government said smoking pot in public could be considered nuisance, due to the smell. That’s punishable with up to a 3-month sentence and a fine of 25,000 Thai baht ($780, €728).

0.2%thc is just a joke. They limit the most medicinal Cannabinoide of the plant. Maybe they just don’t know about the amazing health benefits of decarboxilated high thc cannabis extracts (over 85%) that you have to eat if you are ill, I have seen hundreds of cancer patients just using that oil to cure their cancer. They just don’t have a clue about it.

  30. Thomas Nilsson on June 19, 2022 at 6:00 pm

The weed purchased in the shops is high potency. It is only the derivatives that cannot exceed 0,2% THC. Oil, hash, food products etc. Why the law was formed like that I dont know. But the growing, selling, buying, possesion and use of high THC marijuana is legal. As stated in the video, not legal to smoke in public though.

  31. Nathan Breon on June 19, 2022 at 6:03 pm

It’s a plant and should be legal to do whatever you want with it all over the world, governments tell us no but force us to take experimental vaccines… its madness

  41. Simon Hoiberg OLSEN on June 19, 2022 at 6:17 pm

Opening it up like this in Thailand is going to also create much more opportunity for advances in medical MJ, I really think so. If you know Thailand has always been BIG on medical tourism, and on conventional as well as traditional medicines, so I foresee Thailand creating a very unique, profitable, AND beneficial niche for alternative approaches to mental and physical health. Congratulations Thailand, what a ballsy, and correct, move!

  42. Kenny Official on June 19, 2022 at 6:19 pm

unwanted drug tourism? what do you think why they legalized it in such a rush? to bring back money in to a dying economy maybe?

  43. Scott Austin on June 19, 2022 at 6:20 pm

f a tourist got banned for life over possession of a rolled joint from 2018 , do you think the Thailand Government would reduce banned for life to a 5 year ban? In the Thailand detention center, prior to deportation, several Farang’s received a 5 year ban for "overstay" and "possession" too! Still do not understand whey the Phuket court banned a Tourist for Life over possession of a rolled hemp cigarette given to the tourist. Have fun with the "Green" for medical PTSD applications!

  44. Archives4Khmer on June 19, 2022 at 6:20 pm

Don’t be happy though, anything higher than 0.2% thc is considered illegal.

  45. Harvey Javier on June 19, 2022 at 6:22 pm
