Thailand News Update | Legalising cannabis & 8 mil tourist to Thailand in 2022

Thailand’s Tourism and Sports Ministry has dusted off its calculator this morning and is predicting there will be at least 8 million tourists coming to Thailand this year. The Public Health Ministry is proposing to totally delist cannabis from the narcotics list, paving the way for households to grow the plant legally.

So you can grow marijuana then go to jail if you smoke it? Great clear laws there. Well done Thailand 👍

They can hit the millions mark if they end testing on arrival and at any other point during one’s stay. Absent complete opening up, how can the average Joe like myself make any plans – which are complex enough as it is, I assure you. I wonder how many Thai ministers know how difficult it is to travel internationally and make transit stops on time, in the present circumstances.

  9. Marshall Leo on May 15, 2022 at 7:06 pm

They will only legalize hemp which is without THC. And then the Gov elites will be the only ones allowed to get license. They will stock all these CDB and other worthless Hemp extracts gummy bears and edibles and oils in the tourist areas hoping naïve tourist buy them for ridiculous prices. The weird part is that the Vegan Yoga backpackers will buy them.

When Amnesty International is considered a threat in your country by your politicians. It’s time to coincided that your country is under threat from those very same politicians.

As the great Peter Tosh used to sing…"Legalize it, don’t criticize it". Wow about time the Kingdom came to their common sense and will legalize weed. Can’t wait to walk down LK Metro smoking a fatty:):):)

  18. steven shaw on May 15, 2022 at 7:14 pm

They keep plucking random numbers out of the air on the amount of tourists coming yet, they keep changing the rules on entry and making it difficult. Tourists will not come in great numbers until the entry system is easier and the situation has become stable.

Is a SHA+plus hotel the same as a ASQ hotel? I’ve found this very confusing while trying to work through the Thai-pass and visa process.

Legalising that s#!t is nothing short of madness. As if alcohol isn’t already causing enough problems without that crap being legalised. It is nothing more than a recipe for disaster. Cannabis is a gateway drug PERIOD!!! There is a reason why it has been illegal in most countries around the world for many years as it is no good unless used in a proper medical capacity. The only reason why a small number of countries are beginning to legalise it is because of the revenue it will generate and nothing more. They might as well legalise Cocaine while they are at it because that is what frequent Cannabis use leads most people, albeit NOT all onto anyway. If alcohol was to just be invented now there is no way it would ever be legalised.

  22. Jun Oshima on May 15, 2022 at 7:20 pm

Ignorance & stupidity must be a bliss for these Thai politicians. "The country will receive 5 million tourists if visitors arrive from the UK, Europe, Japan and South Korea, he said." Japanese & Korean citizens won’t be coming in numbers as they have mandatory 10 day quarantine when they fly back in their country. Do some more research before making a bold statement like this Phiphat, makes you look like a fool.

Will the Public Health Ministry have a introductory ‘Test and Go’ program for marijuana?
Many areas in the Western Hemisphere have been making huge profits on specially cultivated buds of the marijuana plant. Mike Tyson’s company has been benefiting $500,000 per month from cannabis sales, cannabis grown on his own plantation. Thailand will need to cultivate some very exotic strains of the marijuana buds if they are serious about producing a quality product inside the ganja market, a multi-billion dollar market that seemingly has high demand and great ‘growth’ potential.

So the Thai government said they had Omicron under control and many of us descended on Bangkok before Chrismas. They decided to let bars stay open until 11 PM. Then, Omicron was spreading like wildfire through the bars and restaurants. Myself and 10 of my friends got it on Xmas Eve and only 1 of us reported it for fear of being locked up for 14 days. The government has no idea how many cases they had or have currently. Most of us were asymptomatic but we all stayed in our accommodations out of respect for others until we tested negative again. We all spent NYE in lockdown. Then the government decided to close bars (not restaurants) at 9:00 PM. Seems trite as a solution. 3 shots of Pfizer didn’t keep me from getting Omicron. It just kept me from being sick. Seems like vaccine mandates don’t prevent the spread at all.

  26. robert mendez on May 15, 2022 at 7:28 pm

He must have a crystal ball to make that prediction 8 million good luck

  27. Nicholas Graham on May 15, 2022 at 7:28 pm

The’re talking about legalizing cannabis, NOT marijuana. Two different things. The psychoactive stuff that gets you high will still be zero tolerance, and subject to serious fines and/or long prison sentences. The cannabis, or hemp, can be used for cooking, or soap or herbal remedies, but the THC content is so low, you cannot get high. It is mandatory that this is made crystal clear, otherwise many people may end up in the Bangkok Hilton prison for a very long stretch.

  28. Tony Huge Censored on May 15, 2022 at 7:30 pm

we need to get the bar girls off alcohol and yaba in favor of much healthier and more fun cannabis. It would be so much healthier and so many less problems.

If these tourists have a notion of the beachwaterquality they wil not reach that nummer. Saw some ugly wast in that water at Pattaya beach. Is it not now the time to install a waste water system in walkingsteet at beachfront?

This is the worst decision Thailand has ever made…Thailand will have all the junkies, all the social cases in the world…from a haven of peace, they will make hell out of it.

  32. Robert Zantay on May 15, 2022 at 7:33 pm

Amnesty international is not a threat to the people of Thailand. They seek to stop the abuses that many Thai citizens suffer under the abusive corruption that defines the Thai police and government, and their typically violent response to any criticism or protest by the people of Thailand. If you have ever driven on the highway system in Thailand you may be familiar with the police practice of stopping cars to demand bribes. While the usual amount demanded , 300-500baht may seem small to foreigners, this represents a full day’s wagers to most Thai people.

“Legalizing cannabis” and “consuming CBD” is a big SCAM!….. the REAL CURE is in the high potent THC indica strains of cannabis. These strains are illegal to grow. You’re only allowed to grow LOW in THC strains. Consuming CBD is as healthy as taking your daily vegetables ONLY…. to understand the cure and how people are being manipulated, see RICK SIMPSONS method of making the real oil. There’s also a documentary called “Run from the cure”.

Lots of good news today if it will be followed through. I would argue cannabis has caused much fewer fights, divorces and deaths than alcohol. Ultra low cost airline 🤔 ✈️ 🔥

  37. Ambient Mopar on May 15, 2022 at 7:40 pm

Okay lets see the outcome from tomorrow’s meeting. … Speaking for myself I am hoping they decide 15% THC levels will become the norm. … Yes 0.02% is a very welcome starting point over nothing at all

Cannabis a cash crop for the police? Legal to buy but illegal to smoke in public places? Just having fun with law makers high IQ levels.

Hehehe predict more tourist will come to Thailand, compared to? I do not think they will ever see 8-million. They will be lucky if they reach 4-million and I think that is a stretch.

  43. Thomas on May 15, 2022 at 7:47 pm

Legal to home grow what personal consumption proposed variety of cannabis in Thailand…hemp? There’s a difference in species/varietal. THC levels in hemp usually less than 0.5%…meaning one would have to consume quite a lot to feel "high" if at all…On the other hand, legal cannabis for example here in California (not the hemp variety of the cannabis plant), is anywhere from 8 to 29-30% THC…

Hopefully the ‘delisting’ of cannabis will, sooner than later, see the end of that compressed garbage that passes for ganja these days and the return of the glorious Thai ween of old (i.e. the wondrous Buddha sticks/buds from Udorn/Sakon Nakhon, and Nakhon Phanom in the 70s and 80s). Along with the cuisine (except for such things as เครื่องใน/offal ๆลๆ ) a couple of the country’s greatest gifts to the world.
