USU Cannabis Lab Tour with Dr Bruce Bugbee

USU Cannabis Lab Tour with Dr Bruce Bugbee

Dr. Bruce Bugbee gives a tour of the cannabis research he’s conducting at the Crop Physiology Lab at Utah State University (USU). The lab is one of the few in the world to have a cannabis license. The strains being researched are medical hemp with low THC and high CBD. The cultivation methods being developed apply to all types of cannabis. Sorry for the poor camera work in this video. This was a spur of the moment tour and in hindsight I should have used a tripod. The camera was also not set to auto-focus and auto exposure at the beginning…my bad. Hope you enjoy it anyway!

Check out Bruce’s tips for growing great cannabis here:

00:37 History of Hemp research at USU.

01:23 Current research is focused on botanical medicines. Medical Hemp allows for the study of botanical medicines.

02:50 A tour of the teaching laboratory.

05:06 Exploring the “hall of fame.” Bruce shows us some of his most recent projects and publications as well as some past graduate student projects and research.

07:03 A tour of the research greenhouses.

10:38 A tour of the growth chamber room where Bruce and his students are currently studying the effects of temperature on cannabis.

15:40 Cannabis is one of the most sensitive plants to light pollution. To study the effects of light pollution, Apogee has developed a special sensor to detect trace amounts of light.

16:59 A tour of the main laboratory where Bruce and his students study light quality.

19:04 “Hall of fame” tour continued. Years and years of student studies are displayed.

22:04 Bruce and his student Paul Kusuma have recently been studying the FAR-PAR Index. Apogee developed a special sensor to detect traditional PAR (400-700 nm) as well as far-red light (700-760 nm) to detect the percent of far-red to better predict stem and leaf expansion.

25:45 Conclusion.
– The lab studies many different things, not just Hemp: agronomic crops, food crops, light quality, etc.
– Graduate students are the lifeblood of the whole operation.

Hemp seeds have a hard shell that isn’t an issue if you eat a few, but en masse it gets to be a bit much.
So one day I put them in a grinder.
Absolutely delicious. Sweet like an ice cream topping, which I’ve used it as.

  38. @salmonella8142 on April 4, 2024 at 9:46 am

I cannot tell you how much I wish I had watched this prior to planting this year. That said, there is excellent information here that will certainly improve my current crop. I fully expect to make the planting medium you suggest next year. I feel like a kid waiting for next christmas when this one hasn’t even happened! Thank you, Dr. Bugbee, for such solid information! And I freaking LOVE that giant slide rule!

do you need any degrees or classes taken before taking the online course you offer? and also what are the typical results or jobs available after successfully finishing the course.
