Cmon AMD, give me a reason to upgrade my 8086k.
zen 1 has proven clearly that ipc matters not clock speed..
performance was ver y close to intel 90% the time when intel was running around 1 ghz faster
so im not bothered with slow speed..its how fast it can do the work load
I skipped the twenty seven hundred sex as going from 14 nm to 12 nm isn’t much of a change. The chiplets look really sixty to me. 🥰
Question:
If this smaller tech requires more space for electrical/heat/bleeding.
Maybe the io chip is "Q=A" for the motherboard, (solving simple requests, and accelerating others to the main processor)?
I agree with much of the speculation. However, regardless of how odd it looks, I do think they really will have an 8-core just like Lisa showed. 12 and 16? Sure. Even 10 and 14 are possible. I think the voltage on the 8 might not be final, they may try for a big clock and crank it up to 80 Watts…at least for some versions.
I’ll be all over 12 core ZEN desktop CPU ! Waiting for ZEN 3000 for my next build !

nah its more liekly amd will use 8 core single chiplets for the 8 core skus. even more so if its an r5. lets them release a 6 or 8 core r5 with a integrated gpu down the line. and doesnt make the gpu models of the 8 core chips have better performance. they wanted to avoid similar isssues with the first ryzen chips.
its like the best 8 core chiplets after binning for the consumer line up are going on 16 core parts. though the voltages for the chiplets and attainable clock speeds probably have to match to a certain degree. the second step down stuff likely goes on the 8 core parts. best 6 core stuff goes on 12 core parts. second down goes on the 6 core parts.
4 core bits go to athelons with integrated gpus or maybe low end r3’s with built in gpus. top end athelon may have dual 3 core chiplets. so cheaper but more latency and stuff. probably also worse clock speeds.
since epyc likely is being binned for lower power drawing silicone they probably arent as concerned with the top end of clock speeds. thermal density and such. think about it if they can price a 4 core athelon below an i3 or potentially as cheap as some of the pentiums and stuff…..itd net them huge numbers of sales in countries with lower incomes and also for budget gaming rigs.
they are getting pressure from partners to up gaming performance. having single chip designs for 8 cores and 6 cores would make the r3 and r5 line ups basically the murder intel thing amd needs. only thing i can think of is maybe only gpu models will use a single chiplet for the cores. or maybe x series get single chiplets along with the G skus. though cant see them doing that. really think the low end silicone will do to athelons.
add SMT to r3’s. on r5’s and r7’s. give athelons no smt and have a 6 core dual chiplet as slightly cheaper then a r3. athelon 4 core with a gpu core the same as that or similar. cheaper athelon with 4 cores dual chiplets. think of the sales in china russia potentially brazil, and other places like that. less profits per chip but better performance on the high end which gets them mind share and people would be like well they couldve used two chiplets but gave us one so better silicone. plus not latency.
cheap cpus no one can complain about. gets both mind share and market share. while also murdering intels i3 i5 and i7 line ups. i9 pretty much as well. extreme editions would be murdered. anything lower then that would get murdered. it could hit intel in every price point heavily.
cheaper athelons with better clock speeds and ipc and still really low power draw could replace atoms in some situations. just have boards with soldered cpus like atoms and limited stuff but yeah. potentially even use zen+ to make those to sell off any left over stock or capitalize on better yields and lower costs.
if we get a new r5 3X00G with 8 cores then i doubt two chiplets will be used for 8 cores. makes more sense to use those to try and undercut intel with no retaliation that can keep them from bleeding funds. consoles could even use zen+silicone would still net huge performance gains and if they have managed to get a little bit more out of it then could be a smarter move for both sides.
consoles may also use the bottom of the barrel silicone. theyll be getting custom chips so its possible they could just use dual 4 cores chips and a gpu chip. wont fit in the same socket but could still work for the console.
and think an 8 core APU and a 6 core APU would be very compelling options.
plus 6 cores 12 threads on the cheap would get alot of sales. gpu model garner more for budget systems. 6 cores 6 threads even cheaper but with dual chiplets wouldnt matter to many if the price was low enough. in countries with better economies and higher average wages the r3 or r5 makes more sense. other markets the cheaper athelon sku with 6 cores or a 4 core apu and so on just makes more sense especially if under 100$ or so.
think a coffeelake pentium with 2 cores 4 threads is 64$. imagine if amd was just like yeah we can give you double the cores for the same price. no smt but real cores comes with a better stock cooler. or even a 4 core apu version. or a 6 core version at similar prices. sales on sales on sales. charge the same for the base r3 for a 4 core apu under athelon. for those that dont necessarily have enough to get a gpu right away. charge a little less for 6 cores 6 threads. little less 4 cores 8 threads then a 4 core 4 threads or just no smt at all on the lower end chips. still beats a dual core. could also net them huge sales to schools. 4 core apus that are powerful enough for some high school level computer science classes dirt cheap. once people have the mobo they are more likely to just buy a new cpu and upgrade. if a new socket comes out and people were super happy with the value on 3000 they may be more willing to upgrade to zen 3 or 2+

I’m building my first gaming PC. Moving over from Mac. I was going to get the 2700X with a €500+ GPU (Haven’t decided yet , Maybe 1070TI) for gaming and streaming. Need to get set-up soon. Any recommendations on what to do? Should I just get the cheapest Ryzen CPU I can find (like Ryzen 3 1200), maybe second hand, then get the 3700X when it comes out?? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
What if AMD supported 4 channel memory on their zen 2 APUs? That would help the memory bandwidth bottleneck a lot 🙂
This has aged well.
Suddenly realised : you can look at an IO die as a resurrection of the north bridge chip. With good developing benefit/return, can work on optimalisation of architecture on both categories of chips simultaniously.
I cant wait for the ZEN 2 release & my new build. It’ll be a long cry from my first PC which was an Intel 25MHZ 386SX CPU (no Math Co-Processor), 1MB System RAM, 40MB HDD & 1MB VGA Graphics Card. 🙂
A Possible Idea I would like to know your opinion on:
I think AMD
named their high end GPU Radeon 7 in order to associate their Radeon GPU
brand to their CPU Branding (Intel core i7/Ryzen R7),
naming as a
way to break Nvidia’s mind-share by using existing marketing (Intel’s)
to their advantage like they did in the CPU department
so here is the Idea:-
Next gen GPUs which is Navi will be Named as follows:
* Navi 9 vs RTX 2080TI (which i dont think will happen)
Navi 7 For The high end not Navi 3080.
Navi 5 for the mid range not Navi 3070
Navi 3 for the low end not Navi 3060 and so on.
The Pros:
1.Consistency with naming schemes (wont confuse consumers and may actually give them alternative to Nvidia’s way of branding).
2.linking CPUs to GPUs on the same categories (R7/N7 R5/N5 …etc).
3.Break free from Nvidia’s branding dominance including the new stupidly named cards like 1660 TI …etc.
4.The
first in the industry to include both GPUs and CPUs on the same
branding which would strengthen their brand as the only to offer
multiple solutions.
5.Proactive measurement before Intel comes in to
the market with possibly the same naming scheme as it is the only one
they know.
6.Take some of Ryzen buyers and link them to Navi and vice-versa growing both markets at the same time.
7.Great solutions for system pre-builders.
8.People’s acceptance of the Radeon 7 branding and already linking it to RTX 2080 (XX80 Branding).
The Cons:
1.Losing the branding they worked so hard to gain "AGAIN".
2.Requires Navi to be decent and matching the RTX cards at all of their categories.
11:07 This is verry wrong. 7nm is half the power but not from 12nm from 14nm. So 3800X can be 95W TDP 3,6 GHz base 4,0 GHz boost(from 1800X) and to get to 5,0 GHz boost… o boy this is why they left the door open. They say it will be more than 8 cores but this is why they don`t say 16.

I wonder if AMD has improved the boost mechanics so that they can use lower base clocks for power reasons and quicker boost rampups for actual use cases. The high clockspeed we have seen in the leaks might be precision boost targets. Having multiple chiplets might actually allow for higher precision targets die to thermal separation.
Though this would throw some of the power guesstimate done as part of the cinebench powerdraw calculations which might actually make sense since those seems just too good.
One chiplet has much less lag than two, in the end something has to be the low end.
I think the show was a terror campaign against Intel. She brought ONE of the new chiplets to the show and let it kick Intel’s ass all by itself and let them "fill in the blanks" themselves.

I like the way it’s all modular – they can put together some CPU chiplets, graphics ones and an IO die to build everything from mobile through desktop to server. And they can use a cheaper 14nm process for the IO die which doesn’t need top notch performance.
AMD seem to be doing well out of going fabless too.
And Intel’s strength was always in per thread performance and IPC. AMD look like they’ll erode the IPC lead and per thread performance is less import now most software is better at using multiple threads.

Love my Ryzen 1600, not sure if I really need to upgrade. I think I would only do it so that I could pass this down to my younger brother who is on a very old quad core CPU. I’m thinking the R5 line will still be great for everything I currently do, even streaming + gaming, but even better than before. I’m happy AMD is finally nipping away at Intel and hopefully Zen 2 will even things up.
