Doctor, I have headaches. Will cannabis help me?

Hi everyone. I’m Dr. Dan Stein and I will be addressing that question today.

Headaches come in all shapes and sizes and as a board-certified neurologist, I’m often asked to evaluate patients with head pain and I will share with you my approach.

First we need to determine what type of headache the patient has. Is it the nasty type that’s related to bleeding or brain tumors? Fortunately that’s the most rare.

Is it a muscle tension type of headache with pressure around the temples and the back of the head? That’s the most common. Or is it a migraine type of headache with a severe pounding pain usually on one side of the head or face with nausea, sometimes vomiting or visual changes?

There was a recent study done in Colorado with migraine sufferers who found that a combination of oral therapy and inhalation therapy seem to work best.

Patients with frequent migraines, three or more a week, will use oral therapy each day to help prevent headache and then when a headache does occur, we call that breakthrough pain. Inhalation therapy seems to work the best as a rescue therapy to get rid of that breakthrough pain.

For patients with muscle tension headaches, we use a bit of a different approach. Because muscle tension around the scalp and neck can trigger headaches, we try to use therapies having to do with exercise, stretching, perhaps yoga and other lifestyle changes to reduce muscle tension, reduce the anxiety perhaps and reduce headaches.

But for those individuals who need other therapies, cannabis can be quite helpful. As many of you know, cannabis does reduce stress and anxiety. It also reduces muscle tension and the muscle tension headache associated with it.

no it won’t as someone who suffers from chronic migraines I suggest not smoking marijuana when you have a migraine or even a headache cuz it will make it worse marijuana changes what happens in your brain when you are stoned as a result can make a migraine way worse I know from experience I’ve had times where I wanted to just smoke weed but couldn’t because I had a severe migraine I learned not to smoke weed with a migraine because one day I did in my migraine lasted for days afterwards.
